Can you trust your dog?

I trust my dogs with me. I don't know I'd put a percentage on it as dogs are dogs, but there is zero fear or concern with me and my dogs.

Now, I trust my dogs but I do NOT trust other people to handle my dogs or other dogs not to hurt them (unless I know the dog very well).  So for me it is other people and other dogs that I don't trust.  Other people and other dogs have been quite rough with my 2 little ones.  Due to the size of my dogs I simply can't trust other people and other dogs with them.

But I trust my own dogs completely.  They are totally loveable, cuddleable and hugable!

As you may have read from my earlier post I trust Max with my life!
But depending on the situation and the person asking "dose he bite?" I might tell the person "Well, he only seems to bite every other day, I don't think he bit yesterday, you can try..." and they'll laugh and ask if I'm serious or turn and walk away briskly,

NO! My dog has never bitten but he has growled at strangers and I will not let him around any kids. I've gotten some great advice from this website on working with his reaction with strangers that I've been using so hopefully in time I will be able to trust him more (have had him 2 months).

I don't trust any dog in that sense. I live by the philosophy that all dogs will bite - every dog has a threshold, or a set of circumstances in which he or she will bite.

Since getting Wesley and really starting to learn about dogs, I agree, I would never trust any dog 100% not to bite - all dogs have a threshold, beyond which they may well bite.

That said - I am 100% comfortable with where my dog's threshold is with me.  I am sure I could do something to him that would make him bite me, but it would have to be something awful, that I would never do to any living being, much less, my dog.  I am this comfortable with his threshold with DH and his trainer as well.  I am 90% comfortable with his threshold with his walker - he loves her, but gives her a harder time than he does his trainer, DH and I...  There are a few other people that Wesley regularly interacts with in my presence and he is pretty good as long as everyone follows the rules (no bending over him, a quick pat is ok, lingering is not etc.).  I do not trust him around strangers at all - he is very reactive to people he is not comfortable with (he will stiffen, then growl, lunge and snap if someone so much as reaches towards him) and it takes him a LONG time to become comfortable with a person, although there are exceptions with particular dog savvy people.

Kids and adults flock to her because she's white and big but I will just have to keep the kids away because she is unpredictable.

I understand what you go thru.  Willow looks very bear like and kids go nuts when they see her--they want to hug her! Indifferent And, all kinds of adults are interested in her too, women like her because of her looks, men are interested because of her breed.  I always say she's in the wrong package!

I get this about Diesel as well!!  I bring him everywhere, and he always draws a croud..kids just flock to him..becase i guess he looks like a teddy bear too..fortunatley hes very gentle and behaved with kids..they can run up and grab his ears, try to sit on him, or wrap around his neck, and he just sits their and lightly wags his tail...i was really blessed with an akita with as good of a temperment as he has..ive heard so many horror stories, and while he was extremely wells ocialized (and still is), he wasnt brought up with kids specifically, so it still amazes me with his natural affinity to kids.  I also get the same thing about people saying they want a dog like him..i tell them to do their research, and i'll be quick to point out the bad side (very hard headed, independent, dog and often people aggressive as a breed)..

All dogs bite. I am a firm believer that it's when we forget that they're dogs that we have a problem. Just the other day, I did a stupid thing and was bitten on the hand by a small dog. I bled, it's nasty looking, but it'll heal up fine. Fortunately, I haven't been incredibly stupid around a large, powerful dog, yet. Hopefully, it'll never happenWink

i was really blessed with an akita with as good of a temperment as he has..

Me too!  The only issue I have to deal w/ Mystic is very minor resource guarding.  Thank goodness.
