This sounds too good to be true...

Yeah whatever party smacked THAT down would lose the Pres election for sure LOL. Talk about sour grapes!

You know that the Gov. wants people to spend that money.  Talk to any finaicial planner and they would suggest that if you get a windfall like that you should save it and add to a rainy day fund, do a safe investment so the money can grow.  Funny thing, the smart thing to do is to put the money back in case of emergency but the government wants people to be not to do the best thing to benefit their financial situation for the future.

I really feel that sometimes our politicians don't want people financially secure but instead to be dependent on the government for financial assistance.

$600 doesn't exactly make me wanna go out and buy things. $600 for me means i don't have to wonder if i can buy food that week.

Same thing though, as long as you are spending it (food, clothes, stuff...).  If more people are just buying groceries, the stores will have to hire more people.  That sort of thing.

thats why I think they should send these checks out at least quarterly til things are normalized....LOL.

bwahaha!  The only problem is we do have to put these as income on our 2008 taxes...

The only monkey wrench I see is that we really would not be stimulating our economy. Face it, a very high percentage of our goods are from foreign soil. And it is not "free" money, it will have to paid back, or so I assume.

We will spend it here, but you can bet most of it is going to go to another country.

Personally, if we get a rebate check, it will be used to pay off outstanding debt. According to the news, my DH and I could get either the $600 or as much as $1200. (his income is government based and not considered "earned" and I do pay taxes on it due to the amount I make so not sure where we stand there.)

This part confuzzles me. Is it only these people? Who doesn't pay income taxes? How do I become one of those people?

Actually the 16th Amendment was never fully ratified.  There is no law stating that you have to pay taxes nor file an income tax return.

How does that work?  For 2007 if married and filing separate, at 95K you'd be paying 28% and at 125K you'd be paying 33%, so you'd respectfully make 68400 (@95K) and 83750 (@125K).  If filing single, 95K and 125K are in the same tax bracket (28%).

Alternative Minimum Tax, etc... People who make over 100K begin to pay different taxes than the average person. Most people who don't make this kind of money have/had no idea

It's interesting that the more money people make/have...the more they worry about who's getting what part of it, LOL.

Ah yes, the dreaded AMT....I hate taxes, so confusing!  I pay my dad to do mine, but I am not subjected to AMT (though I was audited when I was 20 years old, wtf?).

    • Gold Top Dog

OMG ME TOO!! I got audited because at the time I was a waitress and didn't report all my tips... to any one that does this... report your tips ;o)

lol I make my dad do mine too ;o)

    • Gold Top Dog

audited....skeery! It sounds so menacing..."AUDITED" *cue gong sound*

I've honestly never minded paying taxes. I am indeed, a sheep...happily bleating in the meadow...and when they come once a year to shave me bald I am cold...but only temporarily. *cackle*
