How does your dog ask for attention?

How does your dog ask for attention?

Max asks for attention from me through his unrelenting nudging. It never stops. Unless he's sleeping, he's nudging.

When he wants attention from "strangers", he is extremely rude. I've been trying to curb this behavior. I actually find it kind of funny though.  He's actually really clever. He'll walk up to the potential attention giver, and sticks his nose right in their crotch. And it never fails, they always jump back and put their hands down to his head to keep him away. Even if they know he does it. [sm=lol.gif] The people who know him think it's funny as well. Don't get me wrong, if I catch him about to do it I stop him. I just think it's clever and funny.

So how does your dog ask for attention?

Funny that right before I read this, Sassy took her big ol' paw and pushed against my leg.  She hates that I'm not paying attention to her.  She'll also sit right in front of me and put her chin on my leg or arm and just stare at me with her big brown lab eyes.  I sort of accidentally taught her that by saying "oh my gosh, who gave you that beautiful face?" [:D]

Molly brings a toy and drops it at you feet saying its time to play. If we are on the computer and she thinks either one of us are on to long she sits by us a barks until we get off.

I get the nudging right under my arm so my hand ends up on her neck.
My friend has a dog that will wrap its paw around your leg and has tripped quite a few people doing it.

Hmm...mine usually will kidnap one of the cats...tie it up and gag it....generally it takes all 4 of them BTW. They then have Buckwheat (the only one who can write) make up a list of demands....here's a sample of a typical ransom note..

"we wan t mor pet and mor fud or the kat gets it...o ellie wan ts another tenis bal 2"

I have a policy of not making deals with terrorists....so I can usually wait them out...generally a rattle of the food bowl will coax out a stooly who I then bribe with kibble to reveal the location of where the cat is being held. Then I don my SWAT gear and  slide into position with the squirt gun. I have seldom ever had to deploy dirty sock bombs...usually I can simply take them all with a few squirts. The Beagles scatter and leave Buckwheat alone....I defeat her by threatening to crate her with one of the Beagles overnight (IOW fate worse than death)...

She heads for the hills and I free the cat...who's usually mad enough to give me a good scratch for my trouble!

    Oh....
yeah...I made it up...but it was good right?

Wow, after all that, the hand nudge seems pretty benign.  [:D]

Tojo sits squarely in front of me and vocalizes at me (not barking). Either that or he brings me a toy, scratches at the door, or rattles his food dish, depending on what he wants.

Every morning, to wake me up, Mona will start with little whines, and if I don't wake up right away, she will rest her head on the edge of the bed and give me those sad puppy dog eyes (when i open my eyes at least) or she will give me a nice big FREEZING cold nose on my face.

Other times, she just rests her head on my leg, chair, or whatever I am near and gives me a sad look and crys.
It's probably the cutest thing...unless I don't give her what she is looking for.

Well lets see..Bog has various ways to get attention  1st for food or outside he'll do a Perfect sit and stare technique....outside now -  frantic circles by door..more pets the nudging of the hand  and for general attention he'll give me his paw. Actually now that I write them down most of his techniques are pretty subtle but of course a mom can read them[:D]

Mine are masters of the stare.  I don't respond to having my arm nudged.  I find that rude and a bit intrusive, so they've learned that if the sit and stare at me I will invite them closer for some love.  Thor will often just stand and stare with a toy in his mouth for the "inside" version of fetch.  I'm to take the toy and hold it out to him.  That's inside fetch somehow.  And he'll KEEP doing it until I say, ok, enough.

If I don't happen to be up at my usual time, Sheba will do a very gentle ice cold nose to the face.  Tyler will stand and stare at me.....either is equally effective!

Sugar will walk besides you and raise her paw.  If you are sitting in the floor she will lay beside you and roll over.  Bandit will just sit in front of me and smack his chops or occasionally if I'm on the phone and not paying attention at all he will lay his head on my knee.

My husky has so many ways to get my attention. She'll start with a stare, then move to a howl/whiney bark, then on to a nudge and if all of that doesn't work she'll climb up on me. She's very persistant.

All my puppy has to do to get my attention is come running out of my room with a dirty sock in his mouth!  [:@]

Max actually throws one of his balls at us.  With the ball in his mouth, he sorta whips his head forward and shoots the ball at us.  If we are busy and ignore the ball, he will usually walk over, pick up the ball, go back to his spot, and throw it again!  Way funny.  Thankfully, he gives up after a couple tosses.

Prancer has an annoying habit to ask for attention that I'm trying to break her out of.  Her head is exactly the same height (when she's standing) as the sofa - the sofa as a big overstuffed area on the edge.   Prancer walks up, then takes a few shuffles backward, then CHARGES at the overstuffed portion of the sofa putting her paws up to pounce on it.   She'll do this several times before she gives up but in all honesty since she also does this when she needs to go potty sometimes I reinforce the behavior by taking her out too fast after she's gone through this routine.

Max will give you his paw, repeatedly, until you pet him.  Buster will nudge or whine you until you stop and pay some attention to him.

The other day I was in a busier neighborhood with Max and Buster and my sister.  This neighborhood is very dog friendly and has shops and businesses all along it.  Almost all of the places along here offer drinks for your dog in bowls and stuff so its pretty nice.  Most of the people there like dogs too.  We decided to get some Italian Ice from a very popular place.  Of course the line was quite long so I sent my sister to wait in line while I stayed off to the side with the boys.  Max was a perfect gentleman (he's not too big on strangers petting him so he sat nicely next to me), but Buster got everyone's attention.  He whined at every single person who walked by and he refused to stop until someone would come over and pet him. Then he would be quiet for a few seconds and start up again.  I had the whole line of people just staring at us when a dog walked by and Buster screamed and screamed for this dog's attention.  It was a little embarassing, but he was quite funny and we got a lot of attention and a lot of questions and all he wanted was to be petted. [:D]
