Thanks everyone, glad your always here to help and give advice, but remember, when I get another pup I'll be asking lots of questions as it's been a long time since I've raised a baby.  Yes, we want a little one again.  Another little girl, I think, we shall see.  Thanks again yiou guys are the best!  Don't know what I'd do without you all.

Vivian, I'm with everyone here.  Follow your heart.  I know that April is doing the happy dance for you.

If you want to take in another dog, do it! April would be glad to see it.

I'm not sure how to say this tactfully, but I mean it with kindness and concern so please bear with me, but are you sure at your mature years that you want a puppy instead of an adult dog? Are you up to dealing with an unhousebroken, untrained, energetic black hole of energy and time? Also, particularly if you are considering a small breed puppy, many of them often live 20 years or so quite easily - do you know what would happen to your dog if you became unable to care for it? Do you have a "chain of succession" set up?

I'm asking primarily because I "inherited" Rascal because his first owner passed away and I wanted to make sure he would get the best possible care. I was (and still really am not, quite honestly) in a good place to have a dog - I was in college, I was moving around like crazy, I had no money,  I had a BF who didn't really like animals... it worked out fine for both of us in the end, but it was some real rough going for a while, and I know many dogs whose owners pass on do not have it so easy. I think everyone who has an animal should set up a clear plan for what would happen if something happened to necessitate a new owner/caregiver. I'm only 23 and I have a "line of succession" set up!

I hope you do go ahead and get another dog, and I hope when you do you come back and share pictures with us :) April was a dear and of course could never be replaced, but you can honor her memory by opening your heart and home to another creature.

That ^ ^ was what I was going to say, but Cita beat me to it.  I think it's worth bearing in mind.  Having said that though, there are pros and cons to whatever age dog you decide on... in the end you have to do what's right for you.

Yes, I am up to another puppy, Smile I am a very young 75 if I must say so myself.  My husband, who I have been married to for 37 years is only 62. Smile it will be no problem for us at all.  I swim 4 days a week, lift weights and do machines the other two days, and do aqua classes 2 times a week and take no medicnes except actonol for my bones.  Dr. says I'm in wonderful condition, thank heaven for that. Longevity runs in my family.  Also, I have a best friend whom I have a pact with that if anything should happen to me and DH  that she would take my dog, this was April and I'm sure she will take a new dog also.  That is the least of my worrys.  Thanks all for your concern though.  I really need something to keep me busy, I am not a sitter.  Here is a picture taken of me recently in Michigan.  I really take good care of myself, have to with a hubby l3 years younger. You look really great! I would definitely get a dog if I were you. Personally I have always needed to get another pet right away after I lost one. I don't know why, it just helped me and I love animals so I could never be without a dog or a cat long.

Well as long as that base is covered then I think you should go w/ a puppy if that's what you want and want to deal with 'puppyhood' again.  And since you'll be home that will be better on the puppy.

I say if you're ready for a dog and want a puppy start looking for breeders! :)  The house is super empty without  a dog, I ended up getting 2 when my last one passed. Trying to fill that hole, but remember this new one won't fill that hole in your heart, it will makes it's new place in there.

Let us know if you need help in the hunt for a puppy or doggy.

All my bes, can't wait to see pictures! :)

Yeah Auburn, you look pretty good! I think you'll do great with a puppy, I now puppyhood is tuff but if you want to do it I think is great!! Talking about the line of succession, I have always said if something happen to me and DH; Luke, Zarina and Thor should go with my mom, then my brother and finally with my best friends. Our money will go to them but please, please, please, never with my mother-in-law... and DH says the same, lol!!

So, what kind of puppy are you thinking about? Another little girl dog? Or maybe a boy this time?

I cannot WAIT to see puppy picturesSmile I'm a huge sucker for puppies.

I was told years ago that the biggest tribute you can pay to an pet that has crossed the bridge is to get another one. THey did their job.

I agree with what the others have posted. Another dog will never take April's place in your heart and you will never forget her. Another dog can, however, bring that joy and comfort back into your life. There are so many dogs needing a home and wanting to give and receive love. I think that April would want that for you.
    • Gold Top Dog

I honestly believe , that BECAUSE she was such a wonderful dog she would want you to need another pup in your life ! It is a legacy that she leaves and a treasure in a new adventure for you and your DH to enjoy. You have to know she will help guide you to the pup / dog who wants and needs you the most. It won't be April, may not be anything like her BUT the new pup will get you out of the house, give you some thing to get mad at or laugh at... April was a rookie once, she'll  be smiling along with you as you learn to enjoy and love another furkid.

    I agree :)

My father's turning the big 7-5 this year, and he still goes to the gym about every day and is taking flying lessons in a tiny little "hobby aircraft" he and a friend of his bought into. Confused He always says, "You're never too old to have a happy childhood." lol!
