he does walk on the leash well without distractions. we are trying to introduce more and more distractions while he is on leash so that he will walk well on leash no matter what. the only store we have ever taken him to is petsmart. i dont think i would take either of our dogs to a home improvement store anyways, so that is kind of a moot point. actually we only took him to petsmart to get his nails trimmed anyways, otherwise we would leave him home. i was really only trying to offer some perspective on this subject.

I think the difference here would be that while you are trying to train your dog you have him under a reasonable amount of control.  Your focus would be on the dog and not on shopping.   OTOH if your dog is out of control and you are just in the store shopping and not paying attention you have little chance of preventing accidents from occuring.  Those are the type of situations where a dog is best left at home.

I'm assuming the manager felt that you weren't putting your pooch in the cart because you couldn't and was trying to be nice and boost him in for you.  That was sheer stupidity, but you aren't dealing with a store geared towards animals, so I will just say he's lucky!

I hope you're able to find another dog-friendly place to shop.  We use the Home Depots here for puppy socialization because there are lots of noices and things to expose them to, but we've never had a problem, so our stores don't have the new rules.  With insurance rates what they are, I can't say I blame them for the rule, although it would exclude many of us due to sheer size of the dog!

I have taken Tasha to Lowe's several times here in IN for socialization.  She's a shy dog and when I have her, even if I'm there for something small, my focus is on her.  If I'm looking at something, she's in a sit at my feet and I glance at her every few seconds.  I watch for all people coming towards us and make sure they have plenty of room to get around.  I also shorten her 4 foot leash down to about 2 for greater control.  I'm very conscious when I take her and usually have treats with me as well for rewarding her good behavior.  I think it's a great thing for her.

OTOH I have put my little guys in carts before, but I always put in a blanket too.  ;)

Here's what really cooks my noodle... I can't believe someone had the gall? nerve? stupidity? to not only put his hands on a dog he didn't know... but you know he had to get in the dog's face with HIS face to do so. Next time he tries that with a dog he may not have a face left.
