Is it wrong to make fun of a dog's appearance? (Better???)

Funny looking and cute are not mutually exclusive. They often go hand in hand.

I also think there are plenty of funny looking purebreds, and yes I also think some dogs are downright homely.  Little dude above is not an ugly dog.

Ivan went through a phase in which his ears flopped over on top of his head. He looked absolutely ridiculous.

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have found the next hot designer dog: The Dacshbull!

That's it!  I was sitting here laughing at the fact the post was about making fun, then when I saw the pic, I thought that looks like a pitbull head on a....and you got it!  Or, it could be a weinerbull, or a pittyweinie, or a weiniepitty...I'll come up with more I'm sure!  LOL

awww, I've got a soft spot for the funny looking ones Smile.  He is adorable.

i think he's cute! I love pits with stubby leg mixes, we had a basset/pit mix a while back, coolest looking dog ever!

I would take a funny looking mutt over a purebred puppy store dog anyday.

Dogs in shelters are nothing to laugh at.

I think he's cute.  And oddly enough, he doesn't look as threatening to me as an actual Doxie.  I've been bittin by one dog only and it was a black and tan Daschund, so every since I was little, these little dogs have always struck a nerve with me that says to be careful.  This little guy doesn't strike that nerve.

I recently saw a corgi/GSD mix at a local shelter.  It looked like a GSD with very short, stubby, legs. I couldn't help but laugh, but not at him, more like you just couldn't help but smile!  He was so cute!  Had he been good with kids I would've seriously considered him!

Some of you people are so freaking uptight. You can see that I have a mutt myself, yes? Clearly I'm not some purebred snob? Surely I've posted enough posts about drooling over some shelter dog to show that I have NOTHING against shelter dogs, and actually in most cases PREFER them to purebreds? Surely I talk enough about loving how unique mutts are? Good gravy. Loosen up.

He's freaking adorable!  He's also funny looking & THAT'S something to laugh @ not his situation.  How could anyone on this board even think that that's what we're laughing at?  Relax.

    • Gold Top Dog

Yea, I think he's kinda funny looking.  Of course I'm used to looking at long legged elegant dogs.  But my guess is he doesn't care if it gets him a forever home.  (And he is memorable)

I think he's a little goofy looking too Smile but that certainly wouldn't stop me from taking him home. He looks like a real sweetheart.

I agree that he is funny looking but in a totally adorable way. That different look might (I hope) serve him well in finding a forever home. There are so many average/normal looking dogs in the shelter that having a unique look might be an advantage. Look how much attention we've given the cute boy Big Smile

I'm on the side of yes, it's wrong to make fun of those dogs.

Anyone notice that most of the people scolding me for laughing at his appearance only have purebreds? Anyone notice that most of the people laughing with me (while saying he's cute) have rescued mutts and shelter dogs? Anyone else think that's amusing in a very hypocritical way?

i see your point Chelsea, dont worry! many others do too. there are precious few people out there that WILL adopt a "goofy" looking dog. i would bring that guy home in a heart beat, but i tend to lean towards the ugly animals.... i had a pet snapping turtle for that reason.. i own bulldogs for that reason. the traits in breed of choice can be found in many many other "uniform dogs".. labs, GSDs, Rotties, etc..... the odd looks build character. they stand out in the crowd and i love that about them :D

But as i said before... many people will probably walk past this guys kennel and laugh, point at his crooked legs, giggle at his little button ears, then move on to the kennel full of lab puppies... its a shame really, but thats the fault of THOSE narrow minded people. i would be more than proud to have a so called ugly dog Big Smile Amber is funny looking for a JRT.. she's been called ugly, goofy looking, a sand spur, odd, "WTH is that??" you name it... i even make fun of her looks sometimes. she doesnt seem to care either. she just wags her tail and does a happy dance. its all said with love Wink

my husband however.. when i "make fun" of Amber he will rush to her defense.. "Dont make fun of her!! you'll hurt her feelings!!! She's going to develop a complex!!" and he'll pick her up, or cover her ears, or try to come up with tons of praise and treats. Amber loves the whole concept of attention and doesnt have a clue about her looking goofy. she didnt get much of that attention stuff from her last home where she was just a dog in the yard.
