We sure are trying to send all our hunger vibes to Dakota so she remembers that food is YUMMY.

Have you tried some fish?  Bugsy had a bad tummy a while back and the vet gave us Tagamet and as soon as he had a few of those he was back to eating.  Now I have some generic Zantac in case it happens again.

    wishing you the best

Aw, common Dakota, you're making your mom worry.  Be a good girl and get over whatever it is that's bugging you.

Aww poor baby, hope she feels better soon!

You can usually find slippery elm in bulk at a health store -- sometimes you have to take it in capsules (empty them -- it digests better and works better if you make it into a gel).

I've never 'cooked' it like Pitcairn says, but that would work.  Usually I take a rounded teaspoonful and mix it with 1/4 to 1/2 cup water.  It makes a sludgey gel.  Usually I'll add something like chammommile tea to it (it's another good stomach healer) and either a tiny bit of honey or even some tahini (peanut butter might get a reaction but it's hard on the kidneys).  You can add some meat baby food instead of sweet stuff.

Now ... since she's not wanting to eat -- get a baby syringe like you'd give liquid meds to a baby.  thin out the slippery elm more -- like more of a liquid (and I'd surely use the chammomile tea -- make a cup of full strength cham. tea and add the teas. of slippy elm while the tea is hot).  Add something like a spoon of lamb baby food (rich but pleasant)

THEN suck some up in the syringe.  Have her stand in front of you and simply hold her snout in your non-dominant hand and the syringe in your best hand.  With the hand holding her muzzle shove up her lip near the big canine tooth.

Park the tip of the syringe behind that tooth.  Tell her soothingly as you go "this is gonna help your belly -- Aunt Callie says this stuff REALLY helps and it doesn't taste bad either."

And while you make soothing noises gently squirt it in her mouth.  Hold the muzzle just loosely enough so she can work her tongue to swallow.  See how much she'll comfortably take.  I would do a syringe before and after she eats.  It will soothe the way for digestion and it will leave a soothant after as well.

I actually also have another super good recipe for using slippery elm that you could also use, particularly since the vet has given a probiotic.  This one is a favorite of my holistic vet, particularly when she suspects a dog may have an ulcer or a really distressed gut.  It's VERY healing and might generally help given her current condition.  All this stuff is health store stuff -- not tough to make at all.  If you can give it an hour before or an hour after eating all the better.  Best NOT 'cold' -- so usually I fill 2-3 syringes and leave one out until the next time I use it so it is room temperature.  The aloe juice just needs to be a good quality ORAL juice -- preferably one that's not too bitter (and if you tell a health store that they should be able to direct you to one).

1 -- half a cup of boiling water.

2 -- add 1 rounded tsp. of ground slippery elm

    3 -- let cool totally

    4 -- add 1/8 c. + 2 tablespoons of aloe juice

    5 -- add 10 drops of chlorophyll

6 -- Add 2-3 capsules (open the caps) of acidolpholus

When I left, I tried to put Neiko inside and leave Dakota out but she wanted him with her. So I gave them both kongs (she wasn't interested in hers) and left. While I was leaving Neiko was looking worried. Hopefully he won't try to escape in his panic.

Yep -- he's watching out for her.  He's a good boy.  And she just *might* snack on hers just .. "well, just to keep the kid honest!!"

You could use Nutri-Cal to get some nutrition into her.  It is a sticky, high-calorie, nutrient paste (pet store).

Have you considered treating with liquid Safe-Guard (link) or Panacur in case she has picked up a parasite?

    Mary Staus
I know of people who have spent months trying different diets and supplements to try to help their dogs with chronic diarrhea, only to find out that the cause is parasites and treatment with either Panacur or Albon (for coccidia) clears the problem up quickly.

    Mary Staus
Diarrhea and other stool problems can also be caused by diseases such as SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) and EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency). SIBO can be related to IBD.

Symptoms of SIBO include loud stomach noises, lots of gas, increase in stools, often mushy, and many times, DECREASED appetite and loss of weight.  SIBO may be linked to a Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) deficiency, which occurs due to problems absorbing this vitamin, not due to dietary deficiency.  It is treated with B12 injections, and usually with Tylan (tylosin), an antibiotic powder, or Oxytetracycline.  Antibiotics must be given for 4 to 6 weeks to be effective.  Tylan is very bitter, so is best given in capsule form. ...  The most common test for SIBO is a blood test sent to the GI Lab at Texas A&M.  It is a Cobalamin (B12) & Folate test (dogs with SIBO usually, though not always, have low Cobalamin and/or high Folate).  If you run these tests, it makes sense to also run a TLI (for EPI) because if the results of the B12 or folate are off they are going to tell you to first rule out EPI.

If you think SIBO could be the problem, read the whole section on it:

hmmm, the vet mentioned that. Sending her blood work to Texas and all that.

We have ruled out internal parasites and even gave her antibiotics for it last time we were at the vet, just in case - so that's not it. Could be this intestinal thing. the vet thinks that it's possible she's not absorbing nutrients.

However, I do have good news. I gave her the stomach calming stuff last night and she didn't wake me up at all to go out - all night long (this is after she had the runs *in my car!* - she was that bad. Thankfully I had a plastic mat down so it didn't get on the interior). I even let Neiko out once and she didn't want to go. Then this morning at 7:30 she was barking at me for food! I gave her a treat and she gobbled it up like she was STARVING! *happy dance* So I cooked up some chicken and rice and she ate. Not all of it of course - only about half but at least that's something! Thankfully I'm home from work today so I can keep an eye on her to see if she keeps this down and if her stools firm up. I will see if I can get some slippery elm today.

So glad there is some improvement!  Good vibes for continueing eating!!

Now, that is wonderful. We're thinking good thoughts and smelling the treats.
