Obesity surgery (ottoluv)

I know two people who have had the bypass surgery (both about two years ago, and I've seen them thru those years)- one is really good about following the diet/eating plans she needs.  She's lost weight, kept it off, and has gotten plastic surgery afterward to remove excess skin, etc.  She looks like she takes it seriously and did it for her health and well-being.

The other one looks HORRIBLE!!  It's clear that eating candy/snacks instead of properly balanced meals has taken its toll on her.  She looks like a saggy bag of death.

I think it's really bizarre that so many people think that surgery is an easy way out.  Has anyone actually looked at the post-op lifestyle/possible complications?

yeah it's actually one of the most well studied surgeries.  It has such great results both in health and long term psychological results that the insurance companies for the most part cover it.  That oprah show was ok, but those patients were poorly selected, most of them probably wouldn't have gotten through our selection process.  None of these people think that it's the easy way out, they just feel there is no other way.  The health problems associated with obesity WILL shorten their lives.  The 80+% reduction in major health problems is worth the risk of the surgery for many.

lol-that was more aimed at the people on the thread that think it's too easy.  I struggle with weight issues and seriously considered the lapband, but the whole thing just freaked me out.  My blood sugar is normal and my cholesterol is good--the only issue is blood pressure right now.  Risking surgery is just not worth it at thins point and I'm not sure I would do well with all the after care stuff....

I have known people who were so obese that they could no longer even walk well on their own--sometimes it's serious enough that they need the help a surgery can give.
