We normally try to stuff holes pipes come in with steel wool to discourage mice from getting in. We still get one, once in a while. Jade usually scares them off, though she did get one, one time.
I need to snap a pic of her in front of the oven. There's a hole the gas line comes in that I can't quite reach.
