I am just now reading this. My golden retriever mix had to go thru heartworm treatment a m onth after we got her. According to the little local branch of the humane soceity, she had been spayed, given all shots, and was parasite free, including heartworms. She was given a heartworm pill (dont' know what kind) the day before we picked her up.
A month later i took her to my vet to start her on Proheart6.
THIS WAS BEFORE IT HAD KILLED MY GOLDEN GUY, HUNTER, AND I THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE. Well, they wanted to check her for heartworms and it popped up positive. Said if she had been negative the month before, given her pill, etc, there was no way she should be positive, so ran the test again and once again I saw it come up postitive. Made arrangments to get her treated the next week.
I called the HS and told told them Honey was positive and they wanted me to take her back to their vet. I did, and she tested negative. The HS tried to tell me my vet was ripping me off, but I know him and his love for animals. Well, a coulple of days later the HS vet called and asked if i would bring Honey back in and let him take blood and send it to Texas A&M. I did. I had Honey treated before results were back--and they came back POSITIVE for heart worms. So why did she test postitive TWICE at my vets and at A&M, but negative at the HS vet? I don't know about A&M, but my vet used one brand of heartworm test and the HS vet used another.
Well, she was treated, kept in wire crate for 6 weeks, tested negative and i released her in the back yard and she ran and jumped and leaped and ran and jumped and leaped and ran circles all around in the yard. I think my other 3 goldens thought she had gone crazy. This was 4 years ago Jan. and she was just a tad over a year old. She has tested negative ever since (mine are on Interceptor), the last time just a week ago Monday. Vet says she is in great condition--is 5 now--no damage from heartworms or the treatment. Will post a picture of her. Dogs that are treated before becoming very, very heavily infested do lead a perfectly normal life and I am positive that will be true of your Raja.
