I#%92m really sorry to hear about Raja

how old is your dog? they have very good success with treating a young dog
Some Vets will put the dogs on Heartgard if your dog is young enough
It will prevent any new MICROFILARIAE from becoming adults And it also depends on how many Worms are present
It takes about 2 years four the adult to die ...

Raji is almost 4 years old. Ya they did an x-ray and it came back good, none of her organs or heart were enlarged or appeared to be abnormal.

She is going through treatment right now. And things are looking good.

The only scare I had her with her is a few days ago, she started caughing and sounded a bit flemmy. She did this for about 2 days and I was getting worried thinking it might have something to do with the HW.

Luckily I emailed Callie about it and she said to try to give Raja honey and lemon. And that worked she hasn't caughed since. Thank god!

I really apprciate everyone sending good vibes and good wishes. I really have no friends or family that understand anything about dogs, or that would care. Even the BF acts annoyed when I talk about it and has never asked how she is doing since I started her treatment. It really means more then any of you know!

Save2strays- I just realized the little timeline of the HW treatment you have...how cute!!!

A BF who doesn't care about your feelings isn't worth much.  [sm=2cents.gif]

I"d bet that the BF being annoyed is nothing more than jealousy - just remind him that if it were HE that were sick he'd be thankful for you since you'd probably be taking excellent care of HIM the same way !  (I'm a bit sarcastic - so if it were my husband I'd be following that up with "when I prepare dinner later just HOW sick do you want to be, so I can PROVE it ?").

Just got back from the vet - Prancer's HW test was negative [sm=happy.gif].   I'll be going back for another retest in 4 months so since that would be about 6 months from the time she was picked up off the streets in Miami.

Bah, your BF needs a kick in the butt. Raja is a lucky girl to have someone looking out for her! And your BF is a lucky boy to have a kind, caring girlfriend. Maybe he needs to be reminded of his luck!

I am just now reading this.  My golden retriever mix had to go thru heartworm treatment a m onth after we got her.  According to the little local branch of the humane soceity, she had been spayed, given all shots, and was parasite free, including heartworms.  She was given a heartworm pill (dont' know what kind) the day before we picked her up.

A month later i took her to my vet to start her on Proheart6. THIS WAS BEFORE IT HAD KILLED MY GOLDEN GUY, HUNTER, AND I THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE.  Well, they wanted to check her for heartworms and it popped up positive.  Said if she had been negative the month before, given her pill, etc, there was no way she should be positive, so ran the test again and once again I saw it come up postitive.  Made arrangments to get her treated the next week.

I called the HS and told told them Honey was positive and they wanted me to take her back to their vet.  I did, and she tested negative.  The HS tried to tell me my vet was ripping me off, but I know him and his love for animals.  Well, a coulple of days later the HS vet called and asked if i would bring Honey back in and let him take blood and send it to Texas A&M.  I did.  I had Honey treated before results were back--and they came back POSITIVE for heart worms.  So why did she test postitive TWICE at my vets and at A&M, but negative at the HS vet?  I don't know about A&M, but my vet used one brand of heartworm test and the HS vet used another.

Well, she was treated, kept in wire crate for 6 weeks, tested negative and i released her in the back yard and she ran and jumped and leaped and ran and jumped and leaped and ran circles all around in the yard.  I think my other 3 goldens thought she had gone crazy.  This was 4 years ago Jan. and she was just a tad over a year old.  She has tested negative ever since (mine are on Interceptor), the last time just a week ago Monday.  Vet says she is in great condition--is 5 now--no damage from heartworms or the treatment.  Will post a picture of her.  Dogs that are treated before becoming very, very heavily infested do lead a perfectly normal life and I am positive that will be true of your Raja.

I'm so happy to hear that she's doing well with her treatment ....and as far as your BF not everyone feels the same about animals. they think if they get sick you just go get another one. they don't realize the bond that some people have with them .......I think someone that can not bond with an animal is totally misses out on life .
• Gold Top Dog
Yes, the bf is sometimes not the most caring person. Even though he has 5 dogs he just doesn't seem to get it. And thats a WHOLE  other story.

JoAnn- Thats great that Prancer came back Negative! Ya we'll see how the bf likes it next time he gets too drunk and I say opps your own fault..take care of yourself!

True people that do not share that common bond really do miss out.

Sandra- Thats great that she was a healthy dog after the HW treatment. I am hoping Raja is too, she is young and very energetic and luckily the HW's were not advanced. And that is wierd about the HS test....sounds fishy to me
