Living in TV Heck - Selfish Rant (mrstjohnson)

Yeah, a friend of mine bought a plasma and it also died at the 2 yr mark. The company (Sony) replaced it for free, but still....

    • Gold Top Dog

That's probably why Sony doesn't make plasmas anymore.

    OKay Lisa...

We have got this narrowed down to 2....the Toshiba Regza 167 47" 1080....and the Sony Bravia 46" 720dp. Sony has a slightly better track record, less neg feedback,....BUT we found a killer deal on the Regza which is normally $2300 for $1300-1500...it's an inch bigger....and it's 1080....SO..

    Leaning heavily towards the Regza...

    Any updates on y'alls search?

DH ended up ordering the 42 inch Toshiba widescreen LCD with the 120HZ...he found a great deal online and it should be delivered either today or tomorrow.  Hopefully this will be the last one...

I think you are making a good choice...I think that is the one at the house now, and personally I love it!  The picture is great, etc.  DH says he can see a little blur when we are watching hockey or basketball (if this is an LCD you are referring to), but personally I don't notice anything and he's a little TV nuts right now (that's why he's getting the 120hz - supposed to help with that).  We realized you have to adjust the colors once you get it.  I will get the AV Forum link for you from DH that has all of the calibrations for all of the different models.  I guess the colors are all cranked up per the manufacturer...but you need to adjust them for your house.

I made the call to go with 1080p, so that's the way I would go.  Although nothing/or near nothing is currently broadcasted in 1080p (most is in 720p), I didn't want to have to upgrade again in a few years when everything did go to 1080p.  That's what happened with our old TV, we settled only having 1080i because of price and within 2 years it was out of date.  We have a Blu Ray player in the PS3 and that needs 1080p.  Of course if you don't have it, it will down convert and personally I probably can't tell the difference anyway, but why not, right?

we looked at the 42" but they seem so SMALL! We right now have a 32" crt flat screen and it seems HUGE compared to the 42" simply because of the "shape" I think....I am wondering if the 42" would be big enough. They seem so small in the stores...hmm..

ETA: Then in widescreen/HD the bars top and bottom make me feel you're losing/not using 2" top and bottom which makes it seem even smaller.

That was my concern too.  The one thing I did notice when we went from out 53" to the 47" that's in there now, I was worried if the size different would bug me; however, I didn't even notice it.  I think with the LCD's etc. all you see is the picture so even though you think it will look smaller, it doesn't.  The projection TV we had was a widescreen too and there is a setting that allows you to stretch the picture across the whole screen.  So hopefully it won't be an issue.

Here's the AV Forum Link DH has been at:  http://www.avsforum.com/

There is a lot of talk about a Green Push issue with the Toshiba's; however, we didn't have the problem at all and if you buy it at Best Buy or Curcuit City you can always take it back.  I think it was a problem with one specific batch that came out in the summer because the thread and the complaints have pretty much died down...or it was just a couple of people making a huge stink over nothing...we are getting the extended warranty through VISA which covers issues like this and gives you a full refund, etc. if you aren't happy.  I was surprised at how much cheaper the warranty was through them (About $150 for 5 years).

a cheap brand, called olevia Wink  i still have to buy a new washer and dryer so cant go hog wild. but i would have loved a 50 inch 1080p plasma

    • Gold Top Dog

dlp tv's offer a great mix of large size screen and deep black levels combined with excellent all around picture quality for much less price than plasmas.

DH wants a plasma but we have waaay too much light in the room and the reflection was awful!

are you guys going to get a hd-dvd or bluray  high def player? that would probably be the cherry on top for the ultimate living room

    • Gold Top Dog

Don't get a bluray. It'll be the betamax of the hd world. You heard it here.

    • Gold Top Dog

Yep, we have the Blu Ray player inside the PS3
