Meet our New Boy!!! (Liesje)

    • Gold Top Dog

Congrats!!  It sounds like everything is going well.  Keep up the good work!  There might be a couple of bumps in the road in the next couple of days to a week, but sounds to me like it is going VERY well.  Good choice.

To me, he looks almost like a Shepherd/Rott mix.  If you look at the pic of him from the back, and you were to imagine the tail gone, he looks alot like a Rott, but of course the Shepherd is the dominant look.  Whatever his is, he is very handsome!

Best of luck to you all!!!!!!

He looks great! I'm so glad to hear that the 2 of them are getting along. Now your DH can have his own dog ;p

Things went OK the first night.  Tried to have him in his crate and Kenya in our bedroom like normal, but Teddy whined and howled.  I know we could train him, but it was late and we share this house.  There's a 2 year old kid on the other side.  So we put Kenya in the crate (she ran straight in and plopped, like "hello!  Why did I not get this huge crate with a new bed in the first place?";) and Teddy slept on Kenya's bed in our bedroom.  We did have to teach him that he can't sleep on the human bed!

This morning was crazy b/c DH is gone and both dogs were going crazy to get out.  I put Teddy on a leash (no idea if he has any recall and we don't have a fence) and just let Kenya out b/c I didn't want to leash them within 4 feet of each other.  They both pottied and then Kenya did this thing where she runs really fast in a HUGE circle and then runs up to Teddy and nips at his side or stomps on him.  My assumption is that they are playing b/c neither dog is barking or really growling, she just kind of jump at each other and then run.  Poor Teddy got the short end of the stick being on a leash, and after Kenya rolled him, I made her stop.  But Teddy's tail was wagging!  So I hope they are just playing.  I know Kenya loves to chase and I know Teddy can be a rough player.  Kenya seems really excited to have someone else in her yard, but I don't want to overwhelm Teddy.

congrats! he's beautiful! How much does he weigh?

Believe it or not, Kaiser hated Wyatt the first couple of days i had him. Obviously, this didn't last dog because now they're inseperable.

He's taller than Kenya, but pretty skinny (his hips stick out), so maybe 70ish?

I think he's maybe German Shepherd/ Collie.  Oh and he has a black/purple tongue!  He does have Rott markings, but his face is very slim and he is very leggy.

I am sure that you will find that he will help bring Kenya even more out of her shell!  He looks like a great choice! Congrats!

He's gorgeous - what a face!  It does sound to me like they are trying to initiate play with one another and figure each other out.

Even though Pofi adored Mia from the start, sharing some things was touchier than others - Pofi was a bit guardy about our bed and me and Mia is definitely resource guards with high value treats and food.  So we managed some of these things quite carefully and actually still do manage treats and feeding very strictly.

Sounds like you are paying careful attention and managing their interactions - I have little doubt they will be fantastic companions for one another before too long!!

     Congratulations!!

     He is adorable. Party!!!

The chasing and nipping sounds exactly like what my two girls do in the living room at least twice a day (and try to do on walks sometimes lol) - lots of play growling, body slamming, high speed chases, etc. - it's all play, and yes leashes do get in the way.  If you can find a nice fenced area for them to be off leash in, I'd do that often so they have a chance to burn off the puppy crazies and really get to know each other. :) Congrats!

He's BEAUTIFUL! What a face! I love it! Congratulations to you all!

Mukasa is a Ugandan name. Wink

Here is a page of African Names. I was just thinking to go with Kenya...

i love him!! what a beautiful coat too, i bet its soft!

i was thinking, as far as what breed mixes, GSD, Golden, and Rotti.. or some combination of the three... the golden might explain the legginess and size since goldens arent small dogs.. the first time i met one i had no idea how huge they could get!

and it sounds like Kenya was "flirting" with him when she was running and nipping. Kaydee does that all the time to the boys.... she's such a hooch.. Embarrassed

It's still going good!  When I was leaving for Kenya's training, the both so got excited I couldn't leave him behind!  Teddy rode in Kenya's crate (otherwise he jumps over the back seats) and Kenya rode on the front seat.  Bad...yes I know!!  I'm going to buy one of those gates for the back of the car.  Anyway,I got there early so I had the entire fenced yard to myself and turned them both loose.  They just ignored each other.  Teddy was very good during class and barely whined even though he had to be tied to the fence.  He did chew through one leash but that's OK.  After class, we turned Teddy loose with another dog Molly and they had tons of fun chasing each other.  It was a little overstimulation for Kenya.  At home, we put Teddy on a long leash and let him loose in the yard with Kenya.  Holy crap!  They both play rough, but both dogs were instigating and no one was actually growling.  The fun ended when Teddy invited Kenya to be the chaser and he ran two houses over.  He doesn't know the boundary of the yard.  Instead we went on a walk and they both did fine.  Kenya bit him again inside, but he growled back and she got a time out.  She's like the bratty child that acts all sweet and then pinches the other kids when no one's looking, lol!  I'm not too concerned considering it's been less than 24 hours and if she REALLY wanted to pick a fight, she's already passed on plenty opportunities. We are still doing sessions of both dogs lying down near each other and taking turns getting treats.  Now they are both dead tired.
