Colds are viral, as Glenda says. Vets sometimes use the term "colds" for non-specific URI's, but would not ordinarily prescribe antibiotics unless they were using them to prevent or treat a secondary bacterial infection. While kennel cough is often left untreated if it isn't severe, the secondary pneumonias are treated, and sometimes antibiotics are prescribed prophylactically.
