Pregnant chihuahua, please help UPDATE

I called the emergency vet last night and she said the problem didn't sound serious enough to warrant a middle of the night visit. I did however take her to her regular vet today and he said while there is one puppy further towards the birth canal than last week he doesn't think we're in immediate danger. He thinks it would be best to wait until I can tell she's in active labor instead of cutting her open needlessly. He gave me his home number in case something happens after hours, because the vet I called last night said even if she needed a c section she didn't have the proper staff in the middle of the night to do it. Her regular vet says he can do it with just himself and his wife to assist him.

On a seperate note, I don't consider myself a breeder. My dogs are registered and very beautiful but I'm not in this to make money, or to run any kind of breeding service. I love my babies and loved it when she had a litter last time. I slept in the living room with her and the puppies until they were 8 weeks old. I even had to hand feed one because she had an accident when she was a week old and fractured her chest and she could not nurse. Unfortunately she didn't make it, but I gave my all to the mother and the last litter and I will do the same for this one. I've tried to post on these threads before but there's always a few people who have to get on their soap box and preach about the do's and don'ts of breeding and "have your dog spayed" etc. I don't need to hear any of that, I had a specific question and thank you very much to everyone who gave me constructive answers. I'm a good caretaker for my little guys and sometimes I get nervous and like to turn to other people who have more experience than myself for their opinions.

And by the way, my vet said that he's given dogs c-sections way more than 3 times, and that the probability of having her uterus rupture is very minimal.

Anyway, again thanks for all your help. I'll continue to keep you updated of Moo Moo's progress.

I am sure part of this post was directed at me. I also have registered and beautiful dogs. In fact, at the last dog show we took Zoey to the judge was very impressed with her. That being said she is spayed.

If you need to look to a forum for breeding help than imo you have no business breeding dogs. Breeders do discuss breeding the in and outs and I am sure many things that could or have gone wrong... but a good breeder DOES NOT accidently let a dog tie or end up pg.

I am also very sure you did love those puppies...who doesn't love puppies? But are you willing to take back those pups if they need to leave the homes you placed them in? As a breeder that is your responsiblity to take back what you have brought into this world.

Yes, I do get on my high horse when it comes to the irresponsiblity of dog owners who think because they have a registered dog or a cute dog it is a dog worth breeding. Cute and registered does not = being worthy of breeding. I feel the same way about horse breeders too. Check out local shelter listings and see how many chihuahuas, pups, young and older are listed. it is very sad... registered also doesn't = not being euthanized...

In all honesty, I fear that if you heed your vets advice you might end up with a dead puppy(ies) or a dead bitch. Please make sure you have an E-vet on standby. While some breeders do wait until active labor before proceeding with a C-Section, they know the signs of distress. Please make sure you are aware of these signs because the longer you wait, the bigger the risks to the whelps and dam.

By the way, if you breed dogs that makes you a breeder. Sadly though, based on what you've posted, it doesn't sound like you are breeding responsibly. "Responsibly" meaning that you are breeding 2 Chihuahua's that are excellent specimens of the breed per [linkhttp://www.chihuahuaclubofamerica.com/illustrated_standard.htm]the breed standard[/link], had them evaluated by a qualified third party(i.e AKC judge) and are utilizing health testing such as OFA and CERF as there's quite a few [linkhttp://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Park/3905/chihuahuadiseases.html]health issues[/link] that afflict Chihuahua's.

Then you shouldn't be breeding. IMO breeding a pet over and over, who has already had difficulties (a c-section) is irresponsible and selfish. I'm glad you got a lot of enjoyment out of her last litter, do you think she did? How about that baby that died? How about the bunch of puppies that you put out there when there are thousands in shelters? I'm sorry, but it's really hard not sound rude when addressing this, and I would imagine that's why you haven't got any responses yet. I'm sorry to the moderators/administrators. I just couldn't risk the minute chance that anyone would read this and say, that sounds like a great idea, I'm gonna breed my chi.

I hope everything ends up well with Moo Moo and her puppies. Your right you can breed your dog all you want to. She is your dog. I too love my dog and she is beautiful also but she will never have a litter of pups. Why because I love her so much that I would never put her through that knowing she may have trouble and die and there are to many dogs in the world today without homes that need a home they can call their own.

You say you are not a breeder. If you breed dogs. Yes you are.

I would rather have my dog then breed her to have her die during labor and maybe have a live pup to raise in her place.

Hope your updates on Moo Moo are all good. I mean this sincerely.

Awww, guys, you've said nothing that I don't agree with, but, the pups are coming whether any of us like it or not, and as I recall, MOST of us are here to help one another.

Meilani is the ONLY one of us who has offered any constructive help. I'm betting ALL of us could offer something to help, regardless of the circumstances.

Is this the same vet who will do a C-section without a staff? Maybe you should consider finding another vet.

i hope everything turns out for your dog. you stated you only wanted the best for your dog and i dont feel allowing her to whelp giant pups is the best, you were given very good advice and i hope you heed it. good luck.

Good breeders are not in it for money either. the breed to better the breed. They dont breed for the sake of just breeding a dog. registerd and beutiful dosnt make 100% good breeding lines.

I am not going to preach to you. Your dog is going to have puppies, and nothing can be done about that. There is stuff that can be done to minimize the risk of complications. Now, if you fail to take any precautions and get some of this done, then in my opinion, you do not have the best interest of the dog in mind. You let them breed, now it is your responsibility to make sure the pups and mom are safe and healthy. Get an X-Ray ASAP. You need to know how far along these puppies are. Once the temp drops below 100, labor should begin within 24 hours. You NEED to know how far along the pups are! Get the opinion of a second vet. A good friend of mine lost a dog once during a c-section due to there not being enough staff. The vet and his wife are not enough. Often, waiting too long to do a c-section is when the problems start. Yes, you may bet lucky and be able to perform multiple c-sections, but thats all it is...LUCK! To keep breeding when she is a high risk is irresponsible. Please get more opinions from vets. There are all things that NEED to be done. The puppies are on their way, so please be responsible for the lives that you have created! Even if you just go to a new vet, I think that might clear up some issues!

FYI the definition of a breeder is a person who raises animals primarily for the purposes of breeding.

You can call me a breeder, you can call me irresponsible, you can even call me unfit to raise these animals and this litter. It doesn't matter. I do what it takes to make sure my animals are taken care of. And yes, my heart bleeds for shelter animals. My last chihuahua, Tiny, came from a shelter. Are you trying to tell me that people here only have animals that come from shelters? Am I a horrible person because I like a specific breed of dog?

I understand where some of you are coming from. I don't agree with people who don't have the monetary resources or aren't willing to do the research just sticking a male and a female together and hoping for the best.

Oh and by the way, the last litter of puppies all went to people I knew personally and I have pictures and updates on all of them on a regular basis. One of them even lives across the street from me.

I will keep updating as far as Moo Moo's welfare is concerned, and would even like to post pictures if anyone is interested. I beg you please, if you have nothing nice to say don't waste your time. If you have constructive critiscism that will help me at this point I would love to hear it. But telling me I shouldn't have allowed them to have puppies is going to fall on deaf ears because that ship has already sailed.
