    Guess the breed???

Hi! I just had a little puppy given to me and was told that she is a chihuahua. We named her Abby. Abby does not look anything like a chihuahua but maybe a mix. I was hoping maybe someone here could help me out. I think that she is probably a mix between chi, rat terrier or Italian Greyhound. Thats why (not thinking) I put AbbyIG as my sn. I think she has more features like the IG than the chi or terriers. I have searched all the small breed dogs and cannot find anything that really looks like her. Whatever she is. She is cute and just so sweet. [sm=angel.gif]

I've seen quite a few Chi's that look sighthoundy in build....including some almost the size of Whippets. Chi's go all over the board when it comes to type, or lack thereof due to all the people out there breeding them...*sigh*

the pup is cute...obviously a toy breed or toy breed mix. I would think waiting about 2-4 more weeks would yield dividends as to what breed she may be....[;)]

Of course, it is hard to tell when they are pups and you will only truly know as she grows but she sure does look like she has a lot of Parson Russell or Jack Russell in her.  What does everyone else think?  Btw, she is GORGEOUS!  Such a sweetheart!  SMOOCHERS to her!

I wondered about the jack russel and looked up that breed too. I assumed that she would have bigger ears, bulgier eyes and a tinier nose for a chi. I didnt know that they could look like her. Thats why I assumed she must be a mix. She weighs between 4-5lbs. She is 6 months old. The woman we got her from couldnt tell us much about her because she has been passed around. I can only imagine what the past 6 months of  her life has been like. Anyway, thanks all for your help. Even though in the end it doesnt matter because she is loved regardless. I would really like to have an idea of whether she could really be chi or something else. lol! Thanks!

Oh and to add to the life she has had before now. She is also deaf. They didnt tell us that but I bet they knew. She doesnt respond to anything. I can shake keys over her head while she sleeps. Squeeze her squeeky toys, clap my hands, bang on things and call her. She doesnt respond to anything and will not wake unless touched or feels vibration. Poor girl has had it rough.

    That was my first thought!

Unfortunately, there are quite a few genetic problems that run in Parson/Jack Russells because of the wide branch of breeding that they have.  Look at this website and see what you think:
    [linkhttp://www.fallingbranch.com/library/indexlib.shtml]http://www.fallingbranch.com/library/indexlib.shtml[/link]
It may give you a resource or a way to help with your individual problem.

When we got Lucky they told us he was surrendered because he was going blind[:@]!  I cannot for the life of me even remotely imagine why ANYONE in their right mind (key words there) would give such a DEVOTED and WONDERFUL dog up like Lucky just because of a physical problem.  Their loss, our gain and we have NEVER been sorry.

I'm glad to hear though that you love her inspite of her physical deficiencies.  Good luck.  She's a pure beauty.

Thank you for the link. I have been looking at different websites for quite a while now reading about deaf little doggies and the best ways to train them. Knowing that she is deaf seems to make me love her more. It may sound wierd but it just makes me feel that she needs me more. That she always will. I couldnt believe it when I read that some breeders would put their puppies down if born deaf (or with other issues that made them "special"). I told hubby that she could never go without a leash. Not for a minute. I dont want to loose her. Anyway, thanks for the help. Yall are FAST!

You are ever so welcome and you will be rewarded with the most incredibly grateful dog once she settles in.  You are right.  She will need you forever.  You will be a good mommy though and she will be fine now.

I do see the Chi, and the JRT, and the IG! I agree that a wait & see might give you a better idea....

Awww, so sweet and dainty! She looks to me like she could be mixed with IG and Rat Terrier. [:)]

Honestly, I can see all the mentioned breeds and she's got me stumped.  She's beautiful though!  Congrats on the new baby!

No opnions on her breed (everyone pick yourself up now! ) I want to say good luck and thank you for rescuing this little girl. We're looking at possibly getting a hearing impaired dog to do chores here - we don't know whether his hearing problems will get worse but I imagine you have a tremendous challenge working with profound deafness right from day one. Gus will certainly be used to our ways by the time - if - he goes competely deaf. People are so verbal it's got to be confusing for her. Fortunately you are right, there are many resources so take advantage of them right away!

    Good luck!

Don't worry about her deafness - go to deafdogs.org and explore the resources there!  You can "clicker train" a deaf dog using a flashlight.
www.clickerlessons.com - just use the flash when the instructions say click and train in a dimly lit room.  Use a waist leash (canis gear -cheaper on ebay) to keep her from wandering off.

I dont know if that was the website I was at earlier but I did read somewhere they can be trained by flashlight and laser pointer. I have always heard that laser pointers could cause blindness. Is this true? Maybe I should start a seperate thread about this. lol! I will check out that website though. I want to learn all I can about this. Thanks again everyone.

I am really looking forward to finding out what this little doll is. I am guessing that she must have some chi in the mix since the original (or was she the original) owner said she was a chihuahua. She has such TIIIIIIINY little leg bones. They couldnt be any bigger than the size of my thumbs (not that that draws a picture. lol). Oh well! I will wait and see and will provide updated pictures so you all can see as well. Thanks again!
