Help ASAP please! (Cita) Possible emergency?

Rascal was chewing on the tail end of a bully stick and I think might have swallowed the last of it (~1/2"?) He's now acting like he needs to puke but can't quite get it out. Should I go to the 24 hour vet right now, or sit with him and see if he pukes? He seems very uncomfortable and is gagging and spitting up a little bit of foamy saliva, and hiding in a corner.

    Thanks!!! I'm quite worried!!

Could the bully stick be stuck in his throat?  I have seen my dogs try to swallow something and it hangs in their throats.  Can you see the sick in his throat?  If so, pull it out.

I would say vet, but that's just me.

He's not making pukey noises or motions anymore, but he's still clearly unhappy and not feeling well. Is this an emergency, or a "get him to the vet if he's not better in the morning" situation?

I stuck my finger down his throat and couldn't feel anything. He couldn't have swallowed it more than 10-15 minutes ago, he was chewing on it right next to me.

If you can see the bully stick in his throat, & you're confident that he won't bite you, try to remove it.  You can give hydrogen peroxide to induce vomitting, to see if Rascal will vomit the piece of bully stick back up.  If he doesn't produce a pice of bully stick then I would go to the e-vet.

He's lying down nicely on his pillow but looking at me with uncomfortable eyes - quiet breathing, but going kind of "in-in out, in-in out" instead of calm "in out in out" if that makes sense?

    I agree with the peroxide.

    Thanks Amanda, I'll try that.

If he hasn't vomitted in about 10 minutes, give him another dose.  If he still doesn't vomit with the second dose, & he still seems uncomfortable, take him to the e-vet.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be seeing his bully stick again soon!

He puked, and it looks like he even puked up some of his dinner (that he had about 2 hours ago), but no bully stick piece. He's still puking a little bit periodically every couple minutes - in 20 minutes if no stick, we're off to the vet.

    Thanks for your help everyone!!!!

My thought too.  If it can jam going down, it can jam coming back up.

    My thoughts as well.

Cita - how is Rascal doing?

    Bevo - bad advice

$330 and 3 hours later, we're pretty much where we started!

They took some X-rays and found it, but it's in his stomach, not his throat. They even gave me the X-rays on CD - I'll see if I can upload them later for fun.

Anyway, they induced vomiting (like I did at home) to no avail (also like at home). They recommended an endoscopy to get it out (minimum $800 and general anesthesia) but since bully sticks are supposed to be pretty digestible I opted to take him home and watch him like a hawk. If he so much as sneezes funny he's going right back to the vet, but for now I'm trusting nature to take its course. This way if a serious procedure needs to be done it will probably be my vet who will do it, not just whoever's on call at 2 in the morning on a Saturday.

It was a fun night for both of us - the whole reason I gave him the bully stick anyway was because I've been pukey and gastro-intestinally distressed all day so couldn't take him out for a walk.

Rascal seems pretty much fine, though. He's acting normally again - he bounded up the stairs when we got home and immediately ran to his bowl to look for food. As long as he seems to be feeling fine and is eating and eliminating normally I'll just send good digesty vibes to his stomach contents and hope we can avoid anesthesia.

Thanks for the input, everyone - I was freaking out a bit, and it's truly an incredible thing to have a group of people like you all willing to send a few thoughts our way on an instant's notice!
