Stainless vs Ceramic

I also didn`t know about plastic and germs. Changed from plastic to stainless and glass today. Thanks for the info. Boy do I still have a lot to learn.

I would go with the stainless b/c it won't break if you accidentaly drop it or anything, and they're easier to clean.

I have human ceramic bowls for my dogs.  I was going to get some made for dogs, but then I thought...why I am spending $5-$10 on a bowl that could break when I could spend just a couple of dollars?  I ended up with black ones that match their water fountain quite well.

Bogey would eat out of them VERY slowly and when she got enough of the food off the bottom of the bowl, she would bark at the bowl and we couldn't figure out what the problem was. Come to find out, she would start barking as soon as she could see her own face in the bottom of the bowl - EVERY TIME !

Makes me want to go buy stainless steel! [:D]

if we are talking just one dog and/or just one households dog...it does not really matter as far as health goes. The dogs will cross contaminate each other more in the course of life and living than you will ever have to worry about from bowls.
    I like stainless...
Stainless is more sanitary. So long as they are kept clean, contagion will not fester on stainless.
Stainless is also easy to tell when they need cleaning.
    Stainless are cheaper.
Ceramic can loose its finish and or crack...stainless will not.
They are both dishwasher safe, but the high temps of the dishwasher can make some low end ceramic brittle and can crack finishes.
My dogs pick up their bowls and bring them to me when they feel it is tiime their butler feed them...the ceramic does not last very long around here.

For me, it's more about the possibly toxic (over time) finish on the pet ceramic.  And, they are licking it every day so to me it's worth just skipping the pet bowls entirely.

We use plastic, but they go in the dishwasher. And the water bowl is also plastic but has a special antibacterial treatment on it.

I like glass water bowls because water tastes better. I only drink from glass. Plastic tastes like plastic to me.

Constant exposure to antibacterial agents seems undesirable.

You know what just tonight at Petco I saw those plastic bowls with the Microban antibacterial treatment on them.  I don't know what to make of it as far as if it comes off over time or what?

It is an additive so I do not see how it would not wear off and be ingested daily.  Has there been a feeding trial to determine the cumulative effects over an extended period.  I don't think so.

    I'll pass.  Not needed.

I learned about stainless with the cats - other types caused chin zits from bacteria. So the dogs also have stainless.

Wow, I knew about issues with plastic but I didnt' know the glaze on the ceramic would cause a problem.  Very interesting. My dog eats out of a pet ceramic bowl, which will be changed. Drinks out of my Pottery Barn mixing bowls. The big dogs drink out of the crock pot as that is the only thing big enough to hold enough water for them for a couple of hours. I will have to get stainless bowls.

I have stainless steel for both dogs now, I switched over from plastic not too long ago, I've never used ceramic. I still have plastic crocks for water, but I'm thinking about changing that too.I rinse out their water dishes once to twice a day when I refill them. How often should I be washing the dogs food dishes?  Specifically stainless steel though, do you wash them daily, every couple of days, weekly?

I rinse the water bowl every morning before I fill it with fresh. It's a 10qt bowl - that's 2 and a half gallons (I have three ridgebacks).  The food dishes -if it's kibble I don't really sweat it, every few days I'll give them a good soap and water wash. If it's raw they get washed with soap and water after every meal.
