do any of you have friends/relatives who are bybs?

I have a friend who recently became a byb. She bred her two Beagles (who are, btw, caged and un-trained outside dogs), and is planning to sell the pups soon. And -- surprise, surprise -- she plans to keep a female pup so she can breed it when it gets older. Crying

I always want to say not-so-nice things, but I know I'll never get around to doing it because (in this case especially) the person is a good friend. All I've done so far is offer some advice for when the mother delivered her pups. Do any of you know any friends/relatives who are bybs?

Not yet.  It sounds wierd to say that, but it's true.  I have a friend who has a 2 yr old male rotti and she refuses to neuter him because the stud fee(? if that's the correct term) is $500.  I want to scream, but like you don't say anything.

Last week, I couldn't help myself, though.  She asked to leave her dog at my house during a party she was hosting because jumps up on people (like I'm going to allow him over here to hump my dogs all night - NOT!).  She complained how and she can't get him to listen.  When I suggested a basic obedience course, she doesn't have the money or time; this dog knows ONLY the sit command!  I told her maybe it's time to get him neutered; got the same $500 stud fee answer.  So, I'm afraid that soon I'll be asked if I want to buy a puppy. I do, my cousins who are in their late twenties, have 3 chihuahua's. They came from byb's and all have bad temperments. I have tried telling them that they should just enjoy the dogs as comapions and get them spayed. They just got a new long haired chihuahua puppy, that they plan on breeding, they got the dog for free, they were remodeling a house( he's a contractor) and they said instead of paying they would give him a Chihuahua puppy.

And the crazy thing is that they were bragging to everyone at their Christmas party how they were selling the other littermates for $700, so she must be show quality. HAHA someone like that had show quality puppies and healthy well bred puppies would not give their dog to just anyone. They also got the puppy when it was only 5 weeks old.

Also one of my second cousins breeds Schipperke's and has for a very long time, she doesn't breed them that often but I also do not think she is a reputable breeder, and does the testing that she should.

I had a cousin try to be a "real breeder" about a year ago.  She had a very poor quality English Bulldog female that she bred to someone else's  male.  I guess in the process of trying to make a buck, she forgot to research the breed at all because when the dog went into labor and couldn't have the pups on her own she had to have a c-section.  She called me asking to get a "family discount" so I helped her out a lot.  After reaming her over the phone for breeding her dog, I told her that the best I could do on the family discount would still cost her about $800.  During the c-section we found that she had been in labor for some time before my cousin called for help.  All of the pups were dead & the dog had to be sayed.  The best part is that we usually charge about $400-500 for a c-section, but she just had to ask for that "family discount".

Actually, yeah. Quite a few. My cousin's boyfriend is the son of a puppy miller, and they (the cousin and bf) think it's totally cool to have five litters of puppies in one day. I've worked (in the pet grooming industry) with a good few BYBs.

I feel so sorry that this poor dog went thru this!  How horrible!  But, I'm really glad that you gave your cousin the family discount, that was very kind of you.[:D]

My father is constantly talking about getting an Olde English Bulldog. He says he'll get me a female, and he'll get a male, and when they're old enough, we'll breed them. Uh, no thanks. [8|]

I know, from comments my parents have made that I have very distant relatives that are BYBs, but I don't know them personally. My grandfather hunted alot and bred some kind of bird dog, not sure what breed. (I think Brittanys?) but I wouldn't consider him a BYB since all of his dogs were working dogs.

I have a few friends who irresponsibly breed their pet rats (BYBing is a problem with rats as well as dogs [&o]) but luckily, I can't think of any friends who breed their dogs. The only person I know who consistantly talks about getting dogs for breeding is my father, but so far he hasn't done it. I've made it clear to him that if he does get dogs with the intention of breeding them, after all of the reasons I've given him not to, he'll no longer be welcome in my house. [8|]

One of my close friends bred her Yorkie with her sister's doxie. They made "Dorkies"....[8|] (groan)

No, but I have some friends (two different people) that have purebred dogs and they've said that since the dogs are purebred and AKC registered (both females as well), that they want to breed the dogs when they get old enough. They take really good care of the dogs, so I'm not worried about that, it's just the attitude that since the dogs are purebred and females, they might as well get bred.

I'm not really sure what to do, I haven't said anything like it's not a very good idea. I myself used to think that would be a good thing to do, but since being on this forum I've found otherwise. Would having just one female dog and breeding it (same breed, they're not trying to cross- breed or anything like that) make you a BYB? I know it's not something I would do (now), but I don't know if this is something that I should confront them on.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but if anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it [:)]

Breeding dogs responsibly is not that easy, it is time consuming, and costly.

I gave it up a few years back. I, then got heavily involved in rescue, and simply could not justify adding to the already existing dog population.

wow, where do I even beguin with my neighbor...

She breeds GSDs both AKC reistered one of American bloodline and the othe of German both with horrable tempermants who both attacked my last dog and left me with a high vet bill. Yet, there is nothing I can do about it, I've called animal control a few times on her but she only recived a warning. I know I have complained so much about her dogs on here but she makes me so upset. She breeds for the $$$ selling her pups at $600 each. The bitch is so skiny and is breed every heat giving birth to about 8 pups each litter. She had the worse time selling the pups around the holidays because her price was too high compaired to others in the newspaper, she even asked me to help her sell...umm..no. Why does she do it?... Her answer... "To pay for college"[&:]

I've given her advice on how to care the pups and what to feed the mom and pups but she never listens to me. She just keeps all the pups outside all the time feeds ol' roy, and lets then poop and pee all over each other in a small kennel over night. err... the only time she washes them is when a person comes to buy one the rest of the time they are really sad looking and I can smell them well over the fence.[:@]

So, I guess that makes your friend a "dork breeder" [:D] [:'(].

Yep- my sister.  She bought a black & silver GSD when she was at Quarter Horse Congress about 6 years ago.  I know she's never had any health testing done on the dog (other than to ask me how her hips looked when she was about 6 months old), and doubt she's even registered.  Plus, the dog has a questionable temperment- is aggressive enough at times that she has to be put in another room when people come over.  Anyway- she's bred the dog twice.  One of the times (I think the first), to a male that was kept outside 24/7.  Now, I have no problems with that- in the right circumstance (our Husky/GSD was outside, but we were outside doing yard work, playing, etc everyday and he was with us).  Anyway- last year she was griping about how with that litter, people changed their minds, she returned their deposits and ended up with most of the litter until they were over 7 months old.  So, last year the dog has another litter right before Christmas, and my sister decided she was taking non-refundable deposits.  She still had at least 2 of the pups back in Sept.  The dogs don't go to the vet- supposedly she gives them their vacs, but I highly doubt that.  Oh, when I questioned her the first time about being concerned about passing the mother's questionable temperment on to the pups, she told me the mother didn't have a questionable temperment (she's the one that proudly told me about having to put the dog in another room).  Guess I can't blame her too much- she learned from my mother, who did the same thing with the JRTs.  Since I know there's nothing I can do about it, I just bite my tongue.  We live about 3 hours away, so I only hear about all this.  I absolutely refused to even go see the pups when she had them.

Fortunately, no, none that I know of. My grandmother is a rescuer (she just lost both of her rescue dogs in one year last year, a dobie named Sweetie and a doxie named Brutus), my parents have always had adopted and rescued cats, my other friends with pets adopted them and they're all speutered. I don't think most of them know what back-yard breeding is and why it's bad, but they also have no desire to breed animals.

We have some freinds (really, freinds-of-friends) who did some very dumb stuff re their many cats and wound up with two whoops litters, one of which had to be put down along with the mother because the mother got bit by a wild animal and had never recieved her rabies shot. Yeah. I'm pretty sure they learned their lesson, but come on, duh! Who has outside female cats that are neither spayed nor UTD on shots and expects everything to be fine?

I did have a conversation with my husband's best friend (who asks me about dogs a lot because his family is thinking about getting one) where he revealed that his sister is a BYB of golden retrievers. He also didn't know a thing about what a BYB is and why that's bad, so I explained it and tried to be nice about it (did't want to directly insult his sister). But when I was all done with my lesson, I had to add that "I can't support that kind of behavior." I hope he got the message. I also told him that when his family does decide that it's time to get a dog, please please please consult with me regarding where they get it from.

I'm pretty sure that I could not be friends with or cordial to someone who was a BYB. I feel that strongly about it. It would be like a friend all of a sudden revealing they're a terrible racist or homophobe. I could no longer be friends.
