Stereotyping........

That when I pass a person while walking my three dogs who aren't labs it is automatically assumed that they fervently desire to maul their children and kill their small dogs.
    • Gold Top Dog
Since Gracie's a mix we don't really have that issue, but since she's a shelter dog some people assume she's either been abused or neglected, but her behavior doesn't show any of those signs. Tookey, the terrier mix, unfortunately lives up to some of the barky, snappy small dog stereotypes!

Dalmatians are aggressive. They are not to be trusted. Their brains also get too large for their head and it causes the aggression.

They are also dog aggressive. I was told they were dog aggressive by a lady who actually runs a pit bull rescue. I told her I had Dalmatians and I got "the look” from her as I get from everyone when I tell them I have Dalmatians.

Also, for some reason the DCA (Dalmatian club of America) through no research has decided deaf dogs are unsuitable companions for anyone and should be euthanized when they are puppies. This is all because they "startle when awakened”. These people really need to come & meet Marley, my deaf dal.

My science teacher has a male Dalmatian and a parrot!  I think I recall her saying that they got along, but she would never leave them alone together or something like that.

I haven't heard anything about Cairns that I can recall.  Oh wait, yes I have.  It's not major, though.  People say that he's wimpy[8|]and stuff like that.  It's not like I want him to be aggressive, but I don't like him being called wimpy, because that's the exact opposite of what he really is!

He's a big, strong doggy!  He's bigger than any dog in the world!  That's what he likes to think, and he actually acts like it, too.[:-]

I've been told that huskies are cute, until they rip your off or eat your baby.  The face ripping comment came from someone whose parents own two vet clinincs.  The baby comment came from a dog trainer!  Scary, huh?
I've been told that the breed is the result of a jackal x wolf cross.  This comment came from a fellow husky owner.  She said one of mine had more of the jackal component than wolf, because she was so vocal.  ???
I've been told that they're wild due to the wolf in them.  Once somebody wouldn't not believe me that one of mine wasn't a wolf!
I hear a lot about how they are untrainable too.

But I find my guys are pretty well received by the general public.  Maybe because of Eight Below and such?

Border Collies: "Those dogs are really smart!" (What do you say to that? Thank them? Deny it? Try to stick up for other dogs?) And, from people whose main experience with them is at dog sport events - "Those dogs are so HYPER, I'd never have one." Well, ok, that's fine, but they aren't really when they are raised right.

Zhi the Chinese Crested: "Um, OK, so . . .it's a dog, right?" (No, I shaved my guinea pig and put her on a leash just for your amusement) And the best one - "You know the World's Ugliest Dog was one of those?" So, am I supposed to dump her for the current Westminister champion?

Let's see.......big dog must equal eating us out of house and home.  (He only eats 5 cups per day which is not nearly what most people think.)

We let the kids ride him.  (Duh.  His back would break and it would hurt him!)

He must slobber all over the place.  (Okay, they got me there!)

He must be a good watchdog.  (Not really.  I've yet to hear him bark at a stranger, so faced with real danger, I have my doubts.....)

The people that entered those contests actually wanted their dog to win and have the title "World's Ugliest Dog."  Has anyone seen the contest?  I have, but I was confused as to whoever won.

I always receive a lot silly questions on care for my Great Dane.  But never heard anyone say anything stereotypical in nature.  I guess they are just the perfect breed.

    Ditto to everything Mastiff said!!!!!

Also "saints must take their owners for a walk".............. nope. It's hard for him to put the leash on me.No thumbs.
and "I heard saints are really dumb dogs".............He's smarter then you [sm=devil.gif]

Nearly every stranger not familiar with Dobes will presume Gracie is a boy - like all Doberman are male...??[8|]

Also, the first question is often, "Does he bite?"  Ok, thanks for asking first, but... no.  Not every Dobe uses his teeth in greeting...

"I would love to have one someday but we don't have a big house" mine have all been condo dogs and they sleep more than my cats do...[8D]

"Oh my... a greyhound, how beautiful but they need SO much room and exercise"  The only need moderate daily exercise and if they are younger they appreciate an occaional run in a enclosed area.

"I am glad that they aren't killing those retired racing greyhounds anymore since there are rescues to save them..." I don't even want to go into how many are still killed a year in this country alone!  [&o]

I'm a pit bull owner..I get the stereotyping waaay too often.

If your pit bull doesn't always get along with other dogs, won't it attack kids or even adults one of these days?!
Uhh..no..animal aggression and human aggression are completely unrelated characteristics in ANY breed of dog..not just pitties.

Pit bulls are inheritantly dangerous and may attack at any time:
Uhh..according to who? They were trained to fight in pits, yes, but against other animals...animal aggression isn't uncommon in pits, but human aggression is, and SHOULD be...they are as stable, and NORMAL of a dog as any other breed..they're pit bulls, not super demon dogs!

    Pit bulls have lock jaws:
    LOL..yeah ok, enough said..lmao

Pit bulls are great guard dogs:
Sure..if you want to be licked to death!

I hope you meant aggression is not common.  I have a new Pittie mix in my home as a foster and although no one has commented I can see that Newt is treated differently by people staying away at the foster dog showings and at the vet's office.

I have a german short-haired pointer with more white fur than I have ever seen on a gsp.
Everyone thinks she is a springer and I have been asked why I cut the fur on her legs...
Also, because she has such a deep chest and small waist (like she is supposed to have) I am constantly asked why she is so skinny, because she isn't overweight like most dogs.  One girl, who I know fed her last dog cheap-crappy food actually grilled me about how much I fed her, then accused me of lying when I told her.
Believe or not my dog eats 4 cups of food a day and tons of treats.  I can't believe that's only one cup less than the mastiff.
