When do you crate your dog?

Sally and Jack are crated when we are gone, and for safety's sake, will probobly always have to be at least seperated when alone, just in case.  DH and I work different shifts, him 8-4 and me 4-12 so that they are not alone all day, so if I don't have anything to do in the morning and he doesn't have anything to do in the evening they are only crated a couple hours a day.  On the weekends sometimes it's more and sometimes it's less.

Jack was crated all night be last night was his FIRST NIGHT out of the crate like a big boy (actually he still slept in the crate, but with the door open), and he was really good with the exception of chewing DH's slipper, but the slipper survived.

I also crate them for meals and raw bones.

My Swissy is crated at night and durning the day when we work and occasionally if he is inside and we have company who don't like our big dog.  Our pug is crated during the day or when we are not home.

Since Charlie is still a puppy, he is crated whenever we can't watch him 100%.  For example, when we are working out on the trendmill, when I am cooking dinner/doing dishes, etc.  DH works from home so the only time Charlie is in the crate during the day is to take a nap, to settle down, or misc. other times.  Probably in total about 4 hours during the day.

He is also crated whenever he is left alone since he can't be trusted not to eat everything in site.

He sleeps in bed with us so he isn't crated at night.

I've never crated, either.  Not  because I think there's anything wrong with it - it just never occurred to me to do it. Max is totally, 100% reliable in the house. He uses his doggy door when he needs to go outside and is content to sleep on the couch or up on our bed when we're not home. He doesn't even bother shoes and/or socks on the coffee table anymore ... although he still has a *thing* for my erasable pens.

He's only 15 weeks old, so we crate him whenever we are unable to keep a very close eye on him, which amounts to...

While sleeping at night (sleeps 8-9 hours, bless his little heart!)
While we are eating a meal
    When we leave the house
We feed him in his crate, but with the door open so he can go in and out while he's eating
We often serve him a treat in his crate with the door open and put interesting toys in there

I am home with him all day, so he gets lots of outside walks and playtime. And if he's "done his business" he can hang out outside of his crate in my office with me, playing with his toys...but often he goes and takes a nap in his crate on his own.

I am new at this, so I am hoping I am doing everything correctly.

only at trials/classes. Never crate at home except when getting puppies used to crate (feed them in it).

we crate while we are at work and at night. amelia is really reliable, and i dont think it would be a problem leaving her out in the house. although, she will go in her crate at random anyways so she might spend the majority of the time in there anyhow.

sydney on the other hand cant be trusted at this point. he is super rambunctious and can be a little destructive if left to his own devices.

he used to be crated when we went out - now he's left in two ajoining rooms if we go out.  He is super reliable with this now.  He has never been crated to prevent accidents its been because he is high energy, curious, and a fantastic chewer
Now (15-16 months old) he is only crated at night.  He prefers it and insists that it is locked - he lets out this huge sigh when you lock it - like whew I'm off the clock

Ace is reliable around the house so he rarely gets crated now.  Mainly I use it if he needs a time-out or some quiet time -- like sometimes if there is another, more calm or older dog visiting he gets a little too pepped up and in the other dog's face, and I'll crate him for a half hour or so to help him calm down.  If we have another dog staying with us, I also will feed Ace in his crate.  Occaisionally I also will crate him when I go out for a few hours, just so he doesn't forget that he's OK in there.

He chooses to sleep in his crate most nights and takes naps there as well, but he can come and go as he likes.

Mine are crated and rotated, right now. They trade nights, and they're crated when I'm not home. Hopefully, that'll change at some point. For now, it's how things have to be.

Never at this point.  The crate is set up, but he chooses to sleep on his mattress next to it instead.  I guess we should just take it down at this point!

Russell doesn't need to be crated home alone, but unfortunately our new landlords require it [:(]. So any time I run out I have to put him in there (not that he minds, but I feel guilty). But while I'm at work my MIL dogsits, so R's not crated much.

Gypsy is crated when we're in bed and when I am at work.  She sleeps in an open crate (by her own choosing) when we're at home.

Willow is completely reliable as far as house training and behaving herself , so no crates here.
