Really confused on what breed is right for me.

Thank you for help. I actually didnt know that. You train German Shepards all your life you dont expect what a terrior offers, is what I learned. The house breaking reason wasnt why I had to get rid of her though. I know she's at a better home though. They moved a few states away but sends pictures and letters. She was the sweetest little thing in the world. I named her Whisper. I can only hope to find a dog exactly like a GS without the hair. ;)
And for those of you who asked. Keno-My chi- was 7 months when we got him a couple weeks before x-mas, which means he WASNT meant to be a christmas puppy..(do the math lol) and He was nought through my DH'S coworker.
Whisper was bought through a very very nice home about 3 hours away from where I live. I wasnt even allowed to touch the puppies becausethey didnt have some type of shot to protect against something or another. And I didnt get Whisper until she was 10 weeks old because she had the mother ween the little ones off before she allows them to go with others. (the more mother's milk they drink the healthier they'll be) So, in fact, I did by her from a very good breeder.

Actually, the pups get moms immunity in the first few days of life and its fine for momma to quit nursing very early.  My last fosters mom started resisting at about 4 weeks.  And these were german shepherds.

I thought I would go out of my MIND housebreaking seven gsds at one time.  I've gotta say that in my experience puppies are puppies and they all train about the same.  However, thats in my experience with various cockers, shepherds, terriers and mixes.

On an excellent quality diet, german shepherds will blow coat twice a year. They are not huge shedders the rest of the time.  I currently have SIX and yes right now I'm brushing constantly and cleaning up fur, but for the most part, they shed LESS than the cockers or any others did.

I stand by my original statement.  If you or someone in your home isn't willing to make a lifetime commitment to a dog, warts and all, buy a stuffie.

I dont think anyone here passed judgement or was rude to you.  You provided us with the only information we had to go by, and from that info I would agree with Glenda.  It sounds like you just gave up on the dogs due to the problem with training, and therefore we suggested you make sure you are going to be in it for the long run next time before you decide to get another dog.  Giving up a dog twice for potty training issues has to make us wodner if you are really willing to give it your all this time around. (Again, dont feel judgd... thats what you told us.)

Im sorry if you feel insulted by that, but I dont think you should.  Its not a personal thing, we are just responding to your question based on the info you provided.  And yes, we do love dogs very much here, so yes, we would want whats best for the dog.  You say its unfortuate that people here are biased.  That they all want whats best for the dogs?  And whats the problem.

I personally would not want to go to a thread where they simply said what I wanted to hear.  We all ask questions here looking for the opinions of others, and for the most part are willing to hear them.

Another person made a post asking if getting a dog for her toddler was a bad idea... we just said we have heard that is better to wait and listed the reasons.  The OP got all upset and defensive, but later came back saying she was just upset because we didnt say what she wanted us to say [8|]

All anyone here is telling you is to please think hard and be sure that you can commit to the dog for life, and in my opinion its great advice and in the best interest of the dog.  If you have made sure that you can then thats great!  But you cant really get upset with us for suggesting you make sure you are ready!

Im sorry you've had those problems in the past, potty training can be more difficult with some dogs than others for various reasons, but can be done.  As far a what breed, mutts from the pound are usually some of the best dogs out there.. have you thought of looking there?

    ORIGINAL: Saradrin

Then we bought a Westie, so even though we were told from EVERYONE that puppies will not soil in the place they sleep, she did....and it wasnt just 1 night in her kennel, it was every night for 3 months solid. She only made it through the whole night twice, so I know it was possible for her to.

This comment concerns me.  A small dog cannot hold their urine as long as a big dog.  Especially when they are puppies.  Is it possible that the two nights that she held it were the exception?  Perhaps she did not get as much water as normal?  Most of the posters on here that have small dogs take them out as puppies at least once during the night.

As for the type of dog you should get... mutts are great.  And there are lots to choose from.  Check out your shelter and save a life.  If you get a young adult dog you can see the temperment too.

I have had terriers for years.  They ARE stubborn and very intelligent.  They also take awhile to house train.  My bitch was housetrained at about five months.  I got up EVERY night for four months to take her out. Puppies are like babies; they need to be "changed"! LOL

You might want to check the local shelter for a young dog (about a year old ought to be about right). You will probably will have to obedience train your dog, but at least housetraining won't be an issue!

We currently have a terrier, he's not THAT stubborn.

I'm also very puzzled. You state you have had plenty of experience with dogs, yet you expect a 10-week-old puppy to hold its bladder all night????
I think anyone who discarded two ;puppies within a short period of time, both for the same easily corrected training problem, is going to have trouble obtaining yet another dog from any reputable source, especially a rescue organization. As it should be.  How about a stuffed dog?

I am very new on this forum, but I saw this topic and the reasons you posted both in the beginning and then your reply.

Everyone did answer you based on what you posted.  even in your reply you did not state why you gave the second dog away, so I would still assume it was housebreaking issues.  Might be - might not be, only you know.

I will say this and I am only being honest, not trying to be hurtful, however, I am really plain spoken,  but had you inquired about any of my pups and I found out about the other two dogs you 'got rid of' I would be very quick to tell you I did not have a pup that would match your needs.  I also investigate people that get my pups very carefully before they get them.  Everyone is telling you straight on the breeder and rescue - no reputable breeder or rescue would let you have a pup.

A pup is for life, would you 'get rid' of a child that didn't potty train as soon as you thought it should?  Neither should a pup be 'gotten rid' of so easily.

Until you are ready to make a lifetime commitment owning a pup, (they are not disposable commodities) and all that goes with it, ie: they are gonna pee and poop, get sick and throw up, may even have the runs ... and I personally don't think you are that committed at this point, you really need to rethink the getting  dog idea.  There is no perfect dog or pup, only the perfect unconditional love that they give to humans.

Again, this is not meant to be either rude or hateful..

I totally understand what you are going through, I had a Westie puppy from a BYB and he refused to go outside, he'd literally hold it until he got inside and then go, even my mom who has always had success housebreaking couldn't believe him, he would also soil in his bed, just didn't care.  I sold him as well, letting the new people understand his issues.  I bought a Cairn Terrier, that gets along wonderfully here, she was 8 months old and crate trained, we have had very little trouble with her and she loves my 3 year old son.  Good luck and my advice as well is an older puppy, it is much less of a hassle.

I could have SWORN I never said I made my Westie hold it all night. IN FACT, every hour ON THE hour I would let her out. She's go outside, stare at me for about 10 minutes and then never go. Once inside the house (no more then 5 seconds) she would pee. Not to mention letting her go outside and watch her potty put her in her kennel so I could run to the store, 5 minutes of being gone and she PEED  in her kennel!!! Well, I finally decided on the dog I want. In case anyone cares...

Saradrin--Do NOT let Mudpuppy upset you, she's very tactless.

I'm sorry but I quoted you.  Directly from your post.  If I misunderstood your post I'm sorry but it seemed pretty clear to me.  You said she only made it through the night twice in 3 months.  And you didn't say that you took her out every hour.  You also forgot to mention that she peed in her crate everytime you put her in there.  My bad I guess.

In any event what kind of dog did you decide on in one day?

I dont think anyone here did anything wrong... we answered based on the information provided.

It's okay. I understand everyone here is an animal lover, as myself. I realize that most people are just trying to look out for whats best for the ANIMAL. Because some people think that they're desposible, I assure you, I am not one of those people. I decided on a Weim because I am a active person as well, and they're very intellegent, which I like. I am also asking everyone's advice to heart, and Im getting one out of puppyhood. Thank you for the people who suggested that. I honestly wouldnt have thought to think that, believe it or not. :)

I am glad the OP is querying us and asking questions.  Terrific.  She/he is unsure about a breed choice.  Great Plan!  However, two rounds of puppydom, two dogs rejected, and then a weim (of all breeds) is discovered as appropriate? NO way I am chiming in to say, "So glad you inquired about the breed".

Who cares at this point?  Mudpuppy is realistic.  What reputable rescue/breeder would want to send a puppy their way?  I am sorry for my call on this one, but it just makes my skin crawl.
