Dogs in the Winter

I don't do anything special for my dogs in the winter and I live in Canada.  Even my Dobe does well on his walks even on the coldest days in the winter.  Our Newf's of course thrive in the winter and my Rottie gets a nice undercoat for the winter.  My dogs get out enough to develop a good undercoat for the season changes.

As for the salt I live in the country and hike trails so no worries for me...have you thought about booties?

Here in WI it can get pretty cold, (well at least before global warming..).  My three dogs all have double coats and none mind the cold.  My Pom's only about 7-8 pounds, but she's almost cylindrical in the winter-time her coat gets so full, and she has no problem with long walks.

The only problemI do have is my ES does get the snow freezing between his toes.  I just use vaseline, it works great.   Keeps his paws smooth and the ice doesn't collect.

I live in South Florida.  We might go into the 40s a couple times during the winter, but thats it.  Most of the year is in the 90s and 100s with humidity so thick you can't breath.  Our dogs are fine with the summers, but on those couple cold nights we usually bring the hunting dogs inside with the house dog, then we really have a full house!

I think it depends on breed.  My Aussies like the snow and will stay outside to play in it.  The hound hates cold, hates snow, and barely gets off the couch from November to April LOL.  My Yorkie will put a sweater on and go out, but her little feets get cold - I have never found boots that will stay on that dog.
I do use Musher's Secret, because we live in an area where people seem to want the roads clean no matter what all that crap they salt them with does to the environment (or to dogs' feet).

sounds like you need a ski mask for yourself! your dog will let you know when it's too cold. Most dogs are much more tolerant of cold than humans are.

well, this is my first winter with my dogs as well. i bought them doggy clothes earlier today, just in case i start to see them feel cold, but until now they seem fine. it's just a precaution. it's funny though. they didnt have much choice so i ended up with a santa outfit for moca. she tried it on today. it's hillarious!!![:D]

I thought the vasoline idea seemed crazy, but I asked the vet about it and tried it out today, it worked great.  I had bought booties earlier but after two walks I already found a hole in one.
No snow, mud or salt seemed to stick to her paws, although the rest of my dog was covered in mud.
I do put Abbi in a sweatshirt when it is really cold.

Our dogs still get at least one, sometimes two walks a day in the winter, they're
just shorter. And they love to play in the snow. Mocha loves it when I throw
snowballs for her to catch in the backyard and she'll keep at it until she's just
shivering so I have to watch that. Our big problem with walking in the street is
salt.Mocha hates anyone to touch her paws  but she jumps right in the tub for baths
so what I so sometime is put a couple of inches of  warm water in the bottom of the
bathtub and just have her stand in it for a few minutes to make sure the salt and
snow are out her paws.  This is our first winter with BooBoo so we'll have to see
how it goes with him.  What they do hate is the cold rain sleet, but a nice, crisp sunny
day with some snow they can play in....they love it.

Kato doesn't mind winter either.  He seems quite content to be outside for longer than I surely would be!  With him I worry about slipping on ice and blowing out a hip or ACL.  Hasn't happened (knock on wood) but I"ve seen him slip and his legs seem to be everywhere!
