I hadn't given much of a thought to this, but in the town Jordan and I used to live in, we'd take our dogs up to our friend's shop while we were working or helping out there, and there were several black men who would come into the shop, either to hang out/buy things or they were the deliverymen - and almost all of them remarked at one time or another how the dogs were "not a racist dog, and that was great." It kind of confused me at first, that it would be so common for dogs to exhibit fear or aggression towards one race or another, because my dogs have never done that. (Duchess hates men of all colors, so I guess she's not discriminating in that regard.)
After talking to them for a while and looking things up, I found out it was more common than I realized. I do think that some of it may have to do with the idea that dogs can pick up on what you're feeling. Duchess's fear of men is amplified sometimes because when I tense up about a man approaching her, she usually reacts worse than if it's a man we know approaching her, where I'm calm about it. I can imagine that skin color could be looked at the same way - if the owner tenses up around someone, the dog will be more defensive?
And just like I've heard of abused dogs being afraid of men with beards, or men in hats, or anything like that - I'm sure they can remember the shade of the skin as well.
