An alternative for rawhide chews?

Bully sticks are a safe, cooked option if you don''t want the ick-factor of raw stuff on your dog or your floors. I used to give my rott mix the cooked bones from the feed store, but she would splinter the leg bones.. so I switched to cooked knuckle bones. she loved them, but cracked the enamel on her teeth- and of course the vet says he can't fix it, and now I feel guilty... Since you have a pit mix, I'd imagine your dog has the jaw power to do some serious dameage to his teeth, too. So, whatever you let him chew on, stay away from the cooked bones!

smoked, cooked, sterilized bones are all UNSAFE for dogs. I know they sell them at the pet store, but they are still unsafe. There is a good chance you'll end with a dead dog or a big vet bill if you routinely feed these bones.
Raw bones only. Bonus, raw bones from the grocery store are cheaper than bones from the pet store.

I absolutely agree!  Also, it's always safest to let multiple dogs enjoy their "special stuff" separately so that there are no fights.  Dogs that will eat out of the same bowl may decide to have a contest over who own's that piece of a cow's leg.

I have to say that the above answers are the best so far.  I want to add, that cow hooves can also be somewhat dangerous.  One of my friends let her dogs chew on those for years and 2 of her dogs got fractures in the molars from them.

The rule of thumb I was told is that if a bone supports the weight of the cow, dont feed it.  And of course, no cooked bones.

We have tried lots of different bones here...including raw and the best for my pups have been bully sticks.[8D]

There are multiple companies that sell bully sticks (bull penis [;)]).  You can usually find them at the majority of pet stores but look around for a good price.  Also, some brands tend to SMELL [:'(]  more than others so if you find some that aren't as smelly when they are chewed, you may want to continue to buy them from that particular store. I have found a couple places that tend to have some with less of an offensive odor.   [:D]

I leave nylabones out for mine to chew on. They really love raw bones, but they only get them in their crates. The girls get along fine, and I'm afraid the raw bones could cause a fight, so I dont chance leaving those out.
