    Foundling!

I found a stray dog today... this little pup. He's got a collar, but the only tag is a rabies tag and the owner didn't register his license number, and I called the vet clinic and they said they couldn't help me, so I called the local animal shelter and left a description... He's pretty dirty and he was shaking and he was extremely thirsty so I think he may have been on his own for a while. Tojo was pretty upset that I was letting another dog into the car but I took them over to a green strip near my house and let them wrestle till they were pooped and now they're cool. Although, if you ever wondered whether it was possible to keep two dogs on retractable leashes untangled - it's not.

Here's a picture... what kind do you think he is? He's Tojo's height (~18" at the shoulder) but a lot lighter and he still has most of his puppy teeth but there are adult teeth. Looks like some kind of doodle to me...

Edited to add: What would you name him? I like to give animals names if I don't know them, even if they're only staying with me a short while and it's always a person name. Any suggestions?

From that picture, he looks like a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.  Did the vet clinic look up the tag number or did they just say they can't help you?  He is very cute!  I would call him Jeffery.

He is just precious...but the Vet clinic who issued the rabies license should be able to help you.  At least here in GA, the owner doesn't have to register the tag.  It has a number on it, and their computer should be able to track it down.

I second the Wheaten.  Looks like even his tail is docked (?), so he's most likely purebred.  Wheatons are such cute puppies.  Hope he finds his way home soon!

Ah, a wheaten terrier. I hadn't thought of that. You're right, he does look like one. I just assumed doodle because there are so many of them around here. The woman who answered the phone at the vet didn't even try to look it up, so I'm going to call again tomorrow and try again.

That's an adorable puppy! Good luck finding his home...Maybe you should call him Lucky, or Chance..I know those aren't really people names, though.

WOW!  He looks just like Newton!  Newton was a stray as well and lots of people have guessed Wheaton Terrier as his breed.  Here's a post grooming picture.

What a scruffy little cutie pie! He's absolutley adorable!! He looks like a Frankie to me.

I'd guess Wheaten, too. What a cutie he'll be when he's cleaned up!!!  Wonderful of you to pick him up, Heidi.

The vet clinic that issued the rabies tag wouldn't even contact the owner themselves???  I can see them not handing out the information, but I darn sure expect my clinic to make an effort on my pet's behalf if called with that being the only ID.

Maybe name him after a famous explorer, like Marco Polo?  Polo might sound too much like Tojo, but Marco???

Found the owners! The next day I called the vet again and talked to someone different and was able to get the information. I don't know what was with the person I talked to the first time. Anyway, he's safely back home!

I called him Jeffery while he was here (thanks for the suggestions!) and it turns out his name was Fozzie. The owner was beside herself with joy and was very glad that someone took care of Fozzie instead of just ignoring him and letting him wander off somewhere. She even asked my address and sent me a $50 gift certificate for the local pet store! When she said she'd send me something I figure maybe a thank-you card, but that was really oool! Tojo has some new toys now, and a rolled leather collar which looks very smart on him as it makes him look more "naked" and natural.

That's wonderful news! Just curious, did the owner say what breed he was?

That's great that you took him in and awesome that you were able to find his owner. [:)] That was so nice of her to give you a gift cert- she was obviously very happy to have her dog back. He does look like a Wheaten to me also and Fozzie is the PERFECT name for that guy!

What good news, Heidi - good for you for being persistent with the vet's office!

And what a thoughtful and appropriate gesture from Fozzie's owner (and, I agree, it's a great name for him!).

He's a purebred wheaten alright! Cute little guy. I know Tojo will miss him.

Maybe you could do play dates?  I'm so glad everything turned out okay.
