Dogs on a plane!!

    Dogs on a plane!!

    Hey guys!  It's been ages!

*wonders if anyone will remember me*

    You guys might remember Wasabi:

Well I'm taking the pink one on her first plane ride!  And I swear I'm more nervous than she is!
We are moving to California from Tennessee.
    We are flying American Airlines.

Can you guys point me in the direction of some articles or posts I can read and alievate all my fears (I've read the AA page about it).  I really want to take her with me but thoughts like "What if she has to pee on the 3 1/2 hour flight what do I do?  The cage I have is hard sided but it's 10" tall instead of the 9" height minimum...?"

I mean if all else fails she can just chill with my parents for a few months, but I'd miss her so much.

    Thanks guys!!

    Rebecca

I don't know specific threads; the search button on the board should help with that.

If I were you, I'd get Wasabi a soft sided carrier just in case the people checking the crate out are sticklers for rules; the soft sided bags can squish if necessary to meet size requirements and are easier to carry than a hard crate imo.

I like these because they squish but don't collapse; I don't use them myself since my girl is too big to ride carryon, but I've heard good things about them via Clean Run and other sites:http://www.sturdiproducts.com/4111/xcart/home.php?xid=6ae810e56eb9fc88d780ae84ac99d045

For potty needs, be sure she'll potty outside the airport prior to security; eliminating on command could be helpful since often there is little or no grass for doggie pottying. For emergencies, some people carry puppy pads - you can put them down on the floor of an airport or airplane bathroom and have the dog potty on that, then throw it away. Limiting water and food intake prior to flight may also help prevent the need for potty breaks midair.

Be aware that you will need to take her out of the carrier so it can be inspected at security. Sometimes they also want to wand the dog or xray leashes/collars/harnesses too. Check to see what vet paperwork you may need to carry as well - often health certificates must be available for inspection.

    I didn't even notice a search button!
    Geeze I feel dumb!
    Thanks :D

And thanks for the tips.  I think soft is the way to go just in case.  A friend might let me borrow his.  We'll see :)

    Thanks again!

Wow, I didn't even know you could take pets as carry on! I remember attempting to board a bus (back in my college days) with my pet rat. Big NO NO.

heh sounds like me earlier this year.

I'm in the middle of a divorce and wanted to take my snake from Michigan to Tennessee.....I could just hear the screams of laughter if I'd called up the airlines "Can I bring my snake on the plane?"

    Wasabi!!! I remember you:)

You might remember Emma, but we just got Teenie, last year. She's Emma's new Dachshund sister. She's around 10.

I'd get a soft sided crate, so it'll fit easier. I've been told that the medium Sherpa bags are the way to go. If it won't go under the seat, they will make you check it. I know you don't really want Wasabi riding in cargo.

I've seen rats on the plain also. A girl a few seat in front of me had a small hard plastic carrier with her. When I first saw it I coudn't imagn what could be so tiny to fit in there. She later opened it during the flight to take her two rats out to share her meal with them. I thouht they were cute but of corse not many people would agree with me on that one.

It's funny because most pet carrie cases look almost the same as other lugage so unless you look really closely it almost impossable to tell what's inside. I've always been so amazed at how well animal fly.

I would check with a vet to get everything you need for the flight and maybe some anxity meds just in case you need them. I've never had a dog small enough to fly with so I don't know all the details but my aunt who worked for an airliner said that there is some sort of extra fee for travling with an animal and you have to get it in advance. So just to be safe I'de say check on everything first. Good luck, Wasabi is such a cutie!

In what part of the state will you be living?  If it's the eastern portion, I hope you like football and the color orange.  [;)]

Oh yeah I definatly don't want her riding cargo!
Like I said if all else fails I'm going to leave her with my parents in Tennessee.  She'll just get fatter than all creation....but it'd be better than her in cargo!

We are in the nashville area.  Only going to be here till Sunday though.

And I went to school in the bleeding orange part of the state XD

    Found a carrier :D

I also ran into a vet while purchasing this and she gave me a lot of tips and tricks to do with Wasabi while we are on the plane.
My fears have been cured :D

Thank you guys so much for all your suggestions!!
Now I remember why I miss these boards so much!

Is it bad to have a dog in cargo? We're planning a trip that will take 14 hours next summer (I actually posted a thread about it not too long ago.) Stanley HAS to go cargo since he's, well, a big guy.
    • Bronze
Oh no it's not bad to have them in cargo.  It's not the most comfortable thing for them (I hear) but he'll be fine.
My dog is only 7 pounds I wouldn't want to put her in cargo I'd be worried she'd get hurt if they hit turbulance or something....ugh I'm just a worry wart.[&:]
You're baby will be fine :D

It's not bad to have dogs in cargo....I wouldnt want mine flying that way unless there was no other option.  99pct of the time everything goes great.  Things happen such as cargo heat stops working in flight.  The crews are aware they have live cargo onboard and if something like that does happen, they can decend to a lower/warmer altitude to save the life.  There are also temp restrictions at your
    departure and destination station.

That is a cute carrier, and Wasabi makes it look GOOD[:D] I love her pink fur. I've been trying to color Emma, off and on, for a while. Her hair is all wrong, and it doesn't take. Dyed my hands a couple of times, though[;)]

I hope that you and Wasabi have a wonderful, easy trip!
