Men and clothing on dogs

    Men and clothing on dogs

Okay, so for the last 2 years Joey has had a rain coat for a jacket during the winter. My husband thinks it's really feminine and won't put it on the dog or walk the dog with it on.

So we had talked about buying him a new, more masculine, coat this year, but had decided that the dog doesn't care, so we'll save money and stick with the feminine rain coat.

Joey (the dog) and I went to our local pet store yesterday and found a flannel jacket lined with fleece. My first thought was my husband is going to think that I'm crazy spending more money on the dog. But I also thought that he might like the flannel coat, because after all my husband is the ultimate flannel wear-er. So I brought it home and saved the reciept just in case it turned out to be just as "gay," as my husband calls it, as the raincoat. To my surprise my husband thought it was better than the rain coat. He said "it's warmer without the stupid straps that wrap around his legs, but he looks like a lumber jack." I responded with "he looks like his dad."

Well it's getting cold here now and my husband asked as he let the dog out if he should put the new coat on Joey. I think he likes the new coat[;)]

    Men.

I don't think the raincoat was all that bad but I think the lumberjack look is snazzier, more stylish, and suits him better.

    Thanks

Both of them are adorable! Especially since that face is in them!

Those are just too cute.  I like the flannel too, but I don't think the raincoat looks feminine at all.  It's not like it's pink or has flowers on it.[:)] Unless the flannel is waterproof, he's still going to need the raincoat on wet days.

Having never had dogs that required winter coats/jackets before I got my red dawgs...I too thought that a dog wearing a coat was a bit...effeminate.  Now that I've got two that have only the thinnest fur layer and almost zero fat, I'm a big proponent of dog scarves and jackets.

I think the lumberjack look is a bit easier to take than the raincoated "morton's fisherman" look.  Especially from a high-testosterone point of view.  (no little hoodie)

I think both are useful.  Zoe has a few raincoats ($1 finds) for when it is rainy, year round,  and many sweaters/etc. because she wears them all day all winter.  She has even more stuff since I learned to sew.

I think keeping both makes sense, although I like the pic in the raincoat best :).

    Cool and functional outfits!

I love the flannel!  Maybe stencil some skull & crossbones on the raincoat and see if that butches it up enough for hubby  [8D]

LOL Nah, I'll just put a Helmet (the band) sticker on it.

Personally I think the raincoat is adorable. But the flannel looks great on him too!

My hubby is the same way. He refuses to allow his dogs to wear clothes. Of course, they've got about 10 lbs of fur a piece, so I don't want to put sweaters on them. But I've thought about getting them raincoats. Winters in WA are very wet and we take a walk every day, rain or shine.

i dont really like the idea of our dogs wearing clothes unless it serves a purpose. amelia get cold easily in the winter, and i would be ok with getting her a sweater. the rain coat idea is good too, but i dont want my wife playing dress up with our dogs. [sm=2cents.gif]

I BET if Ella was a boy and not a girl, my boyfriend would think I was strange for trying to dress "him", but as it turns out, he thinks Ella looks ADORABLE in her new fleece coat.
He ALWAYS comments on how cute the little purple sleeves look on her front legs. I swear he goes into, "AWWW, I have the CUTEST DOG ON THE PLANET" mode faster than I do when she's in her coat.
If she were a boy? No way. Weird, but that's how I think it is.

As for the coats for Joey, they're BOTH so stinkin adorable!
And they DO both have functional (and now separate) uses. The raincoat will be nice for rainy days, and the flannel one will probably be warmer for winter days.

    What a cutie!

I agree. Ella has that pitty skin and coat and she NEEDS something for winter walks. But I highly doubt that I would do other dressing up with her because, well, A.) I think the cutesy clothing looks better on smaller dogs B.) because of her being a pit she has that BROAD pit chest which makes it hard to fit things for her and when I DO find things that fit her, they cost SO much money!

Cycle, we just don't have dress up type doggies.

My husband is the same way! I have a raincoat for Conrad because a) he's a sissy about the rain and b) he's got a double coat and who wants a drenched double-coated dog in the house after a walk? I thought both were practical reasons to haev a coat for him, but DH still refuses to put it on him. I also sometimes put bandannas on the dogs, mainly Marlowe because he's all black and it makes him look more friendly and inviting, and DH hates that too.

This will be our first winter with a single-coated low-body-fat dog and I'm waiting to see if outerwear is required. Hounds tend to be quite hardy, even the ones with thin coats and low body fat, so I'll wait and see if he's showing signs of discomfort before getting something for him. But secretly, I'm kind of hoping I do. How adorable would he look?!?!?
