    Scout obedience trial brag!!!

Scout can now be known as Zalena's Captain Jack CGC RN.....and 1/3 CD

We traveled down to jersey for a weimaraner specialty on sunday. Saturday was the eastern furturity/maturity(but we missed most of that because of traveling). But on Sunday Scout was really on the ball sunday and just did an EXCELLENT job! My poor husband got left back at his uncle's house we were staying at in jersey because Saturday we went to the grounds and I tried to do some training with Scout and it just wasn't working(he kept looking for my husband.  So I went by myself. But I knew a bunch of fellow weim owners there, so that was nice. I warmed up and we went into the ring. A few crooked sits and a few slow ones cost us points, but his stand for exam was rock solid, his heel off lead was better than on, the heeling in a figure 8 was pretty good and his call to front was PERFECT His final score was 187/200, so he won first in the novice A class(not hard to do since we were the only one in that class) and he ALSO won High in Trial That means his score was higher than the open class and the utility class, which both have more advanced dogs and exercises. We got our picture taken and it will be in the weim national clubs magazine!  So I'm pretty darn excited!!!

Here's a few pictures that a friend took for me:

The long down(that's me&scout closest to the camera):

The weim furthest started out his long down with all 4 legs up in the air. He looked like roadkill, it was so funny but at the same time I was hoping Scout wouldn't follow suit!

And me getting the award from the judge:

And Scout with the awards. We won an embroidered blanket for winning HIT!

Just had to brag about my Scoutman!!!!

OMG! Congratulations Scout!!!!!  You must be SO incredibly proud Em!  He looks very serious in the pictures, almost like he knows he's trying to "win" something.  Great job!

Oh, Wow!  That is fantastic!  Congratulations!  Saturday sure was a little on the raw side, wasn't it?  Sorry I didn't make it over.  We were having vehicle issues, and needed the one that was running to be at home to make supply runs.  I never got to the Elkhound specialty yesterday either.  Same reason, just swapped which vehicle was being worked on.

Congratulations!!  He does look rather pleased with himself... [:D]

Thanks everyone. I'm still beaming! Took Scout to the darkpark today for a nice long hike as a reward.

Sue, it would have been fun to meet you, but I totally understand!

The funny thing was that there was a golden specialty going on in the same park. It just seemed kind of funny to see weims&goldens and really no other dogs.

Congrats to you both!  That's a big accomplishment for Scout AND mommy!

Emily, I gotta tell you that Ben LOVES Weims.  They are his favourite breed of dog.  He ignores other dogs a fair amount of the time but wherever we are if he spots a Weim, he has to play, and he won't stop until we make him.  It's really funny to watch.  [:D

Congrats Scout.......You da'man[:D].........Wonder if you seen a lady from NC there with her Weims.......I know they competed and did fairly well also from what I heard. Her name is Rosi?
    • Gold Top Dog
    Congratulations! That is awesome!

Kate, isn't it funny how some dogs only play with other kinds of dogs.  Good to know that if we ever see you and Ben that Scout would have an instant playmate. He likes labs too. Especially black labs. For some reason he likes to mouth their ears!
You ought to feel good about that for quite a while.

Oh that is for sure!!!! Still on my cloud!

Thanks so much everyone. I have been telling just about anyone who would listen to me!!! Rosi, I'm not sure. Do you happen to know her kennel name? If she was there I probably did see her.

And just in case you all want to know what actually should happen in the obedience ring here are the exercises that are performed:

Heeling on lead -dog has to stay in heel position as the judge calls out directions. These include halt(in which the dog must stop and sit in heel position), about turn, right turn, left turn, fast and slow. Throughout all of these the dog must stay in position to the persons left side. He must adjust his pace.

Figure 8 - two people stand 6 feet apart. The person and dog must heel in a figure 8 around the two people. The judge calls two halts in which the dog and handler must stop and the dog should sit in heel position.

Stand for exam - At this point the leash is taken off. You have to make your dog stand and tell him to stay. Then you walk about 6 feet in front of the dog and face him. The judge then comes up and touches the dogs head, shoulders and rump. You then return to your dog by walking around him and back into heel position.

Heel off-lead - You repeat the same pattern in the heel on lead, except the dog is off leash. This is when things can get rather interesting. Especially outdoors where there are so many good smells.

Recall exercise - On one side of the ring you sit your dog in heel position. You tell your dog to stay, walk across the opposite side of the ring. The judge directs you to call your dog. So you give your command(hands must be at your sides) and dog must run up to you and sit in front of you. The judge will then direct you to finish your dog. You're allowed to give one command(verbal or hand signal) to get your dog to return to heel position from the front position.

Sits&downs - After everyone competing has had their turn doing these things they must all do a group exercise that is a 1 minute sit-stay and a 3-minute down stay. During these the handlers stand on the opposite side of the ring facing all the dogs.
