lokismom---giving up Roamer was very hard, I fell in love with that dog. the day I was going to take him to the SPCA, I got a phone call as we were getting ready to go to the shelter, it was from a friend whose friends had just lost their dog, he told them about Roamer and they agreed to come to Houston to meet him that day.
I was ecstatic, but at the same time did not want to get my hopes high, it had been an emotional roller coaster and I was a wreck, since in order to get him in my car and put a collar on him, I had to give him early that morning 4 ace pills! and he was still not out, it was hard, the moment I put the collar on him and attached the leash to it, he fell to the ground and looked up at me, as if saying "I give up." I had taken Romeo to daycare, because I knew I was going to cry all day long, so when I got the phone call, I went back to my car, looked at my sweet boy, picked him up, kissed him as much as I could and started telling him the good news. I was able to take him into the apartment, into my bathroom and gave him a bath (poor thing he was so out he behaved very well). When I met the couple I told them his story, we all cried, and something happened, Roamer walked up to the older man and leaned into him and licked his hand, the rest is history.
I have seen Roamer 4 times since, and every time I have been greeted as if I am the best thing he has ever seen. Sloppy doggy kisses, lots of hugs and pawing and roll overs for belly rubs. He has come such a long way from the dog he was when I met him. I cry every time I see him. Roamer is now Max, he seems to like it.
rwbeagles--since I had their license plate, I had a friend at the DPS (department of public safety) run it for me. It pulled up every address it had been linked to, so it was a matter of going over to each one, got lucky the first try. They were at the parents house, and the dogs were there as well, and that is when they decided to turn the dogs over.
Ron--you were right! Romeo seems more at ease with me now, when I take him out and we encounter large dogs, he looks up at me first, I blow him a kiss and keep walking and talking to him in the most natural way, and he does not go crazy now. Even the people at day care are amazed that he is almost back to his happy go lucky self. My friends have been great in helping with him, bringing their dogs around, making play dates, and creating positive situations for him. Every now and then he gets a little tense, like when we encounter dogs and they start barking at him, so I am teaching him all over again to ignore. Is a day by day thing. I am just so happy that I work overnight and have time to spend with him during the day and do all the things we are doing.
Xebby, Xerxes, Bluelighting,Gradyupmybutt---thank you for the kind words.
Turtle2898--I think my guilt is driving me more than anything else, I feel the reason why the dogs are in the situation they are in, is because of me, so I am going to do whatever needs to be done until the last minute to save them.
Thanks to all. I will post again after the trial
