Im A Horrible Person

    • Puppy
hi it sounds like fleas to me. ive never heard of a tick infestation. take your dog to the vet and im sure they will tell you the same. they will probably have leaflets around that will show you the difference between fleas and ticks. frontline is what ive always used for my animals. in the uk now they can give it as an injection aswel. please dont give her up. its not her fault. fleas lay eggs in ur carpet ect and can stay there for years until hatching, then they find an animal to feed upon. you need to break the cycle. treat everything! as i dais before please dont give her up as its a heartbreaking experience i am currently trying to cope with.
    good luck

First, I have not answered because I do have a life outside of the internet and my daughter takes up alot of that time.

Second, I am 100% sure that they are ticks. I say 'infestation' because it is a big problem, and she has alot of them I never realized infestation was a flea only term.

Third, she is not an outside only dog, she is inside 90% of the time.

My neighbors dog has ticks, and I belive he was the one who infested her. I learned this a few weeks ago, but way too late. Her being a long haired breed we searched and searched but found nothing. A few weeks ago we started finding engorged ticks and tried picking off every single one. I have no clue how it turned into such a huge thing in such a short time.

We have tried all types of tick shampoos, spray, home foggers, home sprays and nothing has worked. Advantge for Ticks is very expensive.

Im not irresponsible, this just got out of my hands and my husband (as well as I) does not want our child to become ill of 'infested' as well

advantage is only $55.99 for a 6 month supply on dog.com. that is less than $10 per month. that doesnt seem all that expensive considering what you have probably already spent on ineffective shampoos, sprays, etc. [sm=2cents.gif]

I have seen a tick infestation that bad. HOWEVER, it is NO reason to get rid of the dog. You just need some good management and damage control. You may have to shave the dog, get EVERY single tick off, by whatever means necessary (dip, shampoo, tweezers, whatever) and treat the dog with Frontline or another similar good quality product. At the SAME TIME, treat the house with bombs or hire an exterminator, and at the SAME TIME treat the yard thoroughly, you may need to hire someone to do this as well. If you can plan to spend a weekend away from the house that would be good. It WILL work, but it will be hard work and it may be expensive. You'll have to do monthly maintenance treatments (with a good quality product) on the dog and treat the yard regularly, which will be added expense, but it's not that bad. The benefit will be getting to keep this dog that you love. If you aren't able to do what is necessary then in the best interest of the dog she should be rehomed.

I feel for you, in a part. I live in Puerto Rico and even a 100% inside dog will have tick or two at least once a month.

Lizzie is outside alot, so I sort of asked for her to get ticks. Right now we are treating a minor tick problem, but it has stayed minor because we have constantly dealt with it.

Before coming to I-Dog I was very ignorant and that Hartz Flea & Tick was a godsend, but it really doesnt work too great [:)]

Order in some Flea & Tick Drops, like Frontline or Advantage. It may be a tad expensive but what will you get in return? A healthy, clean dog, and a safe house for your family. I think that is well worth it.

Please dont give your dog up to have someone clean up your mess.

Frontline works wonders, trust me.  Before we treated my dogs with it, they'd bring ticks into the house all the time and I'd find them crawling around in my bed or one of my family members would find one on themselves...but after Frontline, all we've found are the occasional dead tick lying around...haven't seen a live one in the house since.  It's expensive, but well worth it, IMO.

If your daughter gets lice at school, you will just treat her and get rid of them. Same with any problem. Just fix it.

It seems horrible to have ticks. Just stay calm. Get the right prevention from your vet. You can hire someone to  treat the yard and home.

Things happen with kids AND doggies. We just have to fix the problems as they arise. It is certainly not the dog's fault. They just need the prevention meds from the vet. They count on us for help.

Hello everyone, Im new here and I have found this forum and am in need of some help. I am a horrible person. I own a puppy and I love her to bits and pieces. I have given her the best food I can possibly afford. She gets all her vaccination. I have gone through the pains of house and crate training, with only praise never yelling or hitting.

I have socialized her, she is the perfect pup, good with dogs and children.

But I want to give her up
    . I know Im a horrible person.

The thing is she has become infested with ticks. It is a horrible and gross thing. I have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of the ticks but she is slowly infesting my house. I have a 2 year old daughter and I have found ticks on her. I dont know what to do except find her a nice home where they can treat this horrible plague correctly. I dont want my daughter to become sick. It has come to the point where I cant even pet her anymore because I can feel the ticks along her spin and I spend so much time everyday pulling off the ticks.

I dont know how this could have gotten so out of control but now I think I dont have any choice.

I'm in the process of buying a new house and I dont want to take her into my house and have her infest my house. Maybe in a few years I can get another dog and prevent things from the start so I dont have such a big problem [&o]

My parents had the the same thing happen- a terrible terrible tick infestation.  And yes, it was with an indoor dog.  The took him hunting in South Texas, and a week later the entire house was covered with ticks.  The dog was on Advantage prior to the infestation.  Advantage is not waterproof, so the dog got ticks.  They took the dog to the vet, had him dipped, had the ticks removed, applied Frontline Plus(which is waterproof).  While the dog spent a couple days at the vet, an exterminator was called and their house was treated.  It took about a week before they were seeing no ticks.  Don't get rid of the dog for a very treatable situation.

Hmm, I didn't know tics could get that bad if you weren't in a forested area.

In addition to the above suggestions, I would talk to your neighbor to encourage them to treat their dog and yard as well.  It can't be healthy for anyone.  Maybe your Vet has a pamphlet for you to give them, or you could print something up from the internet.

    Excellent advice.

If your moving, your neighbors dog wont be a problem soon.  I understand your upset about being called a troll, but think about it from our point of view.  It sorta looks like you are just looking for an excuse to get rid of the dog and saying stuff like that in a place like this is just bound to cause an uproar, hence, a troll.  If you are not a troll and seriously want advice, then take the wonderful advice you have gotten from others.  Your dog didnt get ticks on purpose and YOU are the caretaker and are responsible to fix it.  I have to agree it seems you just dont want to... and in that case I supppose he would be better off with a loving home willing to stick by him through the various health issues that may come his way.  This can hapen with any dog so keep that in mind before you get another one in the future.

There are lots of options for you, just talk to the vet.  Have you asked the vet about it?  There are things you can do and to US giving up the dog is not an option.  If you were looking for support in that, wrong place.  But really, you did get a lot of advice here, and good luck with the issue.
