NY Times published editorial on Cesar Millan

Nicely stated, JessiesGirl. Thanks for bringing a calm and wise perspective to this.

With my own two dogs--one understands what I'm saying far more than the other one does. After trying this and that, I can tell the clicker is the way to go with him. He can tell right away that what he's doing is right. And he likes the Hands Off approach, too. I'll continue to work on my voice inflections while we're both learning.

With my female--she does not like to do things more than about 3 times in a row. Different trainers tell me different things about that--she's dominant, bratty, sneaky, smart, easily bored, etc. (I've had 3 trainers for her, poor thing, as I've been searching for the "right mix.)

I do think that she is easily bored and just fails time and time after doing something 3-6 times. That's her limit and because I know that, that's what we work within. She's a good girl who's passed intermediate training and has even been in a Rally event.

Three times it is, then. The key is in knowing yourself and knowing your dog. I like giving praise and using words far more than I like yanking dogs around. That's not me, and it shows, too. I have to do what I know I'm good at.

It's like the couple of years I piddled away studying biology when I knew that literature was my passion and it was "me." Once I switched over, things sailed for me.

Bottom line: any training is better than none at all.

Our rescue male dog will not respond to my husband's commands, only me.

My aggravation w/ Mastiff came when she threw that out there, to pull everyones attention off of CM.and I really didn't know it or see it in the article.

If you didn't see it in the article, how closely did you read the article?  And, if you didn't know he was an illegal immigrant, than obviously you haven't read his book.  If you haven't read his book, than what exactly is all the negativity based on?  What you perceive on TV?  What somebody else tells you is so??

Being referred to as a moron is highly offensive and I don't appreciate you commenting on why you THINK I "threw that out there" and NO it was NOT to "pull everyone's attention off of CM".  That's a very bold statement to make, and if I was anyone else on this board I'd be offended by that.  You are speaking for many people here and assuming they are all capable of being "pulled away" from an article and that no one else saw the illegal immigrant remark either.

I"m disturbed that your remark towards me is let go here when I see others reprimanded for personal attacks.  Please do not refer to me as a moron, as I am not.  Those that don't agree with you should not be labeled as morons or any other derogatory word.

Jan has the most intelligent post on this thread.  She sees that there are MANY different ways to train dogs and treat issues.  A good trainer knows many ways and doesn't shun others for not agreeing with their methods only.  Childish IMO and  not looking out for the dog's best interest.  That's what it's all about.  Not whether someone doesn't like CM and refuses to even consider anything he does as valid.  Many traditional trainers have turned away from dogs CM has rehabbed and told the owners to euthanize.  I thank CM for taking those dogs doomed to death and working with them and rehoming them.  He does it all the time.  Have you ever read about that??  It's in his book.

Mastiff I also agree that the "moron" comment was uncalled for and am also wondering about why it wasn't even remarked on by the moderator.

I for one feel badly, and am sorry that you were described as such by someone on this forum....so hopefully that will help in some small way [:)]

To try and bring this back to the original topic, I have to say that this article (as has been pointed out many times in this thread) was obviously skewed against CM. That's fine, everyone has their own opinion. But before he gets criticized as an anti-feminist, I think people should read his book.

In reference to women and especially his wife, CM is nothing but respectful. I'm not meaning this as a racist comment, but CM is from Mexico. His native language is not English and that is ;pretty apparent when you listen to him. Anyone who speaks a language other than their native language can appreciate the difficulty of expressing your true intentions in that other language.

CM's comment was a stereotype of women and I agree that taken out of context it could be offensive. But the preceding sentence "women are the worst offenders in the world" was an editorial, not CM's words. So before you blast CM as a sexist, keep in mind that the author was picking and choosing quotes to get his point across. As I said, if you read his book (which I have), you'll see clearly how much respect he has for women.

When I "reprimand" someone YOU won't know it.
Believe it or not, I sleep and have a life and other work here besides moderating the forum.

I felt the original post was not *directed* at anyone personally but as a general statement regarding an article...apparently it has been taken personal and it has been removed.

This was in a totally different post after my public warning to everyone...
My aggravation w/ Mastiff came when she threw that out there,  to pull everyones attention off of CM.and I really didn't know it or see it in the article.

Move on and be respectful or this thread will be closed.

Jaime...it WAS directed at someone, Mastiff. It says so quite clearly...

"Well I wasn't referring to anyone specifically when I wrote that, but I guess I am now."

I truly hope you aren't claiming that this statement is respectful. It also has NOT been removed.

Let me be a little clearer here....When *I* read this thread this...
Whoa Kelly good looking out, I copied and pasted the article to my publisher program, so the next time one of these ****** toutes CM, I am whipping it out! lol.
it was in response to this.....
"Women are the worst offenders in his world. In one of the outtakes included in the four-DVD set of the first season of “Dog Whisperer,” Mr. Millan explains that a woman is “the only species that is wired different from the rest.” And a “woman always applies affection before discipline,” he says. “Man applies discipline then affection, so we#%92re more psychological than emotional. All animals follow dominant leaders; they don#%92t follow lovable leaders."

    Mastiff then posted...
I have to assume that you aren't referring to any of us on this board that do like CM?

    folowed by Deb post...
Well I wasn't referring to anyone specifically when I wrote that, but I guess I am now. You are correct it is an opinion piece, my opinion agrees with his opinion

As you all know, I let debate follow out, when I read the original post it was not directed at anyone, specifically calling any one particular member a name it was directed at the comment CM made through the article and a group of followers. If she would have said knucklehead, bozo, silly person would have made a difference?
It was in general conversation, Mastiff took it personal as they are someone who believes that CM's methods are good ones, they have that right to believe that CM is top notch, fabulous, god-like...also phrases, sure on a more positive level but along with good you have bad, and several of us use these descriptive words when we speak of puppy mills, BYB's and unethical breeders or people who might lack in what we consider on a personal level to be right or correct in what we agree or disagree with...is that conversation different?

To satisfy the masses as I'm sure many of the people named moron in the above listed posts are offended too I will have Ryan take this word out of your vocabulary.
