NY Times published editorial on Cesar Millan

"Women are the worst offenders in his world. In one of the outtakes included in the four-DVD set of the first season of “Dog Whisperer,” Mr. Millan explains that a woman is “the only species that is wired different from the rest.” And a “woman always applies affection before discipline,” he says. “Man applies discipline then affection, so we#%92re more psychological than emotional. All animals follow dominant leaders; they don#%92t follow lovable leaders."

Um, yeah, ok.  Can someone please explain to me then why Ben is much more obedient for me than he is for my SO?  Surely by those rules my SO would be "alpha" to Ben...but he's not - I am.  Anyone knowledgeable would be able to tell that about us from a mile away.

Hmmmm.  I knew there was a reason to dislike CM.

Hmm, I wonder what good old CM would have to say about all the years Mick followed my instructions and nobody else's in the family?

When I began volunteering at my local shelter, I had to attend a class first. The instructor said, and gave us a sheet of facts and studies, that women are often better dog trainers than men. He said this has been shown by how women are more in tune with their animals and less inclined to feel the need to "dominate" a dog. A dog responds more to a benevolent leader, a positive leader. Studies have shown that dogs listen and respond to women better than they do men. At least that's what this MALE instructor showed us with his presented facts and studies. He didn't say men were bad or horrible or anything like that. Just that men seem to have more of a tendency to be rough and want to dominate their dogs. Again, I'm not speaking for all men and I don't believe this intructor was either.

Hear hear! I am fully and 100% in agreement with the writer!

CM does almost NO positive training. [:@]

THANK YOU New York Times. I'm so glad a major media source has published a critique of Millan and his show at last. I think the opinion piece was concise, to the point, and accurate, nicely done.

You just have to love that gender stereotyping. Someone should tell Cesar that women are not a "species." [:'(]

    Excellent, concise piece.

My dogs typically are better behaved for me.  When DH is having trouble with one on lead, I take that dog and have no problems.  The only time he is "better" with them is at breakfast time....they are quiet when HE fills the bowls.  Also at bedtime, they go calmly and quietly to their crates where if either I OR DS takes them down, there is noise.  So if CM's theory were to hold water, DS has some hidden ovaries?

Whoa Kelly good looking out, I copied and pasted the article to my publisher program, so the next time one of these ****** toutes CM, I am whipping it out! lol.

I have to assume that you aren't referring to any of us on this board that do like CM?

It is an opinion piece, hence, this man's opinion.  He is entitled to it, and I'm sure that those who do not like CM will agree with everything in it.  I would expect that, just as much as if it was written by someone who likes CM and I liked the piece.  No brainer.

However, his mention of CM's illegal entry into this country in his first sentence is a bit much.  We all know CM is an illegal alien and has made all restitutions and has applied for citizenship as the law requires him to do.  He makes that very well known, so I can't figure out why that would be pulled out to mention up front.  A tad bit anti-Hispanic IMO,  or, flat out sour grapes at his success.  One of the two.....

Also, The NY Times is one of the most biased newspapers in the country!  That's a fairly well known fact.  Those of you who are Republicans or who like Pres. Bush are already well aware of that.

Well I wasn't referring to anyone specifically when I wrote that, but I guess I am now. You are correct it is an opinion piece, my opinion agrees with his opinion.
Re: CM's illegal entry into the country. No we don't all know, I didn't know, this is the first time I've heard of it, hmm, I wonder why it wasn't on his website, or on the tv show.  That part of the article never even stuck in my mind,I had to go back and find it , thanks for bringing it up. This was a dog training article, so I glossed over that part, funny you bring it up.
I don't think you will find any anti-hispanic people on this board, but illegal I think we all have issue with.

Great article. I hope that people will read this and realize that the CM way to train is not the end all be all way to train their dogs.

Let me start by saying that I agree with the article, biased as it may be.  I do, however, enjoy watching the show, partly because its about dogs, and partly because I like critiquing his "cookie cutter" ways.

Now, not to get too off topic, but I do think that it was completely unrelated, and somewhat bigoted for the author to meniton CMs illegal status.  It has nothing to do with the article at all, and only serves as a tool to create further discontent with Cesar Millan.  I, personally, do not have a strong opinion against illegal immigrants, as I work to serve them every day of my life, and enjoy my job very much, but..... it was unnecessary to mention that in the article...

Frankly I don't care if he came here legally, illegally, by foot, by train, riding the back of an African elephant, or hand delivered by seraphim. It doesn't affect whether he is right or wrong about dog behavior and handling.

Exactly, which is why it doesn't belong in the article.  Its just a journalism tactic.

Deb...we do not ALL have issues with illegal immigrants, and I find it disappointing that you'd say something like that.
