How often do you give your pup a bath?

I bathe Trudy once a week. There is no reason they should have a problem with bathing if you use a good shampoo and conditioner for dogs. I like Solid Gold. Rinsing well is key. Many, many dogs get a bath weekly. You can find shampoos that are very good for the skin. Being clean is good for skin and hair, especially in a long haired dog.

Sally's right.  You can bath your dog once a week as long as you use a mild shampoo and a skin conditioner.  Therapy dogs have to bathed and brush before they go to a facility.

I curry my pointer with a hound brush about 3 times a week and her skin and coat are beautiful.  I very seldom have to wash her.

My setter gets brushed a couple times a week and only gets bathed when she gets really filthy - during the Spring it's more often.

They only smell doggy when they are wet, but they are not water dogs and don't have much in their skin or coat to make them smell.

Max hardly ever gets a bath, either.  He's 2-1/2 and I think he's had maybe 2 baths. He has short hair and he doesn't smell, and unless he rolls in something gross, I don't really think he needs one. He likes to run in and out of the hose when we're watering and sometimes I use one of those doggy wipes on him.

I think everyone that owns a Malamute will take you to task on that one. I don't know of one owner that would recommend more than twice a year, never mind once a month or more. My Mal gets a bath about once a year (during his post winter blow), other than that its only a brush.

Maybe people are going to jump on me here, but.........

I love the way my dogs smell. I always have. Why would you have a dog if you don't like everything about them?

They are dogs. They smell like dogs.
I don't think they should be perfumed or overbathed just for being dogs.
    I don't get it.

I love the way mine smell, too. Teenie rarely gets a bath. She got one when I brought her home, and she had one when we got fleas, earlier this year. She's not too bad about rolling in stuff.

She smells GOOD when she comes in from a romp in the yard. I pick her up and sniff her. Then again, I think most perfumes STINK.....

I bathe mine once or twice a month usually, and not because they smell (my dogs never have a bad odour) but because they feel better (their coats feel better to me, and I can tell that they feel better themselves aswell) and they also look better after a bath. I use Earthbath shampoo on mine and absolutely love it.

    You're supposed to bathe a dog? [sm=crazy.gif]

Seriously... the Border Collies get a bath once or twice a year. If they roll in something exceptionally stinky (ie fox poo) they get spot cleaned... Ginger gets a torture... er... I mean bath... every one to two months, but that's only because I have her shaved down. Zippy the Papillon gets a bath every two weeks to a month.

The dogs generally get bathed quarterly. They just got their end-of-summer baths on Saturday as a matter of fact.

My coonhound though does get occasional spot-cleans and rubdowns with a damp washcloth because this dog has an amazing ability to pee on himself. He's got phenomenally bad aim with his whizzer and also thinks nothing of sticking his head directly into the stream of the other dog when he's peeing. Even if I don't catch him actually doing it, a quick sniff test tells me all I need to know. The darn dog smells like pee, again!

But the full-on hose-down soapy bath only happens every couple of months or so. Aside from the pee issue, they don't really smell that bad.

Ace gets a bath every couple weeks in spring/summer, and hardly at all in the winter.  He's not smelly (at least to me -- I like his mild doggie smell), but he really loves mud puddles and brackish water, so he does get pretty dirty.  This summer he also has been a bit itchy, and the vet recommended baths every week or two in collodial oatmeal, so I've tried to be more diligent about bathing him.

I envy those of you with short-coated dogs! It's amazing how filthy a cocker in full coat can get (and he sleeps on our bed, so...). I try to only bathe Russell once every two weeks but sometimes it's more often if he gets into something... mud... various slimes and smears.... I use a shampoo called HyLyt for sensitive skin, that's all I can recall of the name at the moment.

Ella gets bathed once a week due to allergies.
She hates the bathing part, but the after part is a BLAST for her!

Jetta is bathed once or twice a week as well for allergies. Even if she didn't have the itchies, I would still bathe her once a week because with a white dog she shows dirt really fast. Plus, I'm always amazed at how much junk is on her coat...pollen, dirt, fuzzies, grass clips, etc. I just don't like having her walking around collecting stuff like a magnet and not washing it off!

Oooooo, this is the first time I've seen Trudy. She's BEAUTIFUL and looks like quite a little princess! [:)]

I bathe Gingerbread about every 2 weeks. The longer he goes without a bath, the quicker he mats because of dirt, pollen, dust etc. clings to his coat. Especially his face gets really gross... That's usually the case with most long haired dogs like Maltese, Shih Tzus and Afghans.
