Peter-I know you arent going to listen to reason, but I will try anyway.
I have had very limited experience with pit bulls/am staffs. I had a friend who had one a couple years ago (I cant tell you what a wonderful personality that dog had! His dog was as gentle as a lamb.), but mainly my experience has been with rescued dogs.
I volunteer at a local pit bull rescue, the dogs there have all been through heck. One of them was caught after Katrina and had to be trapped because she was so scared, she was then sent to an animal housing facility and abused by the caretakers. She was a little timid and unsure of people (especially men) but I trusted her 100%, and know, even if provoked she would have run between my legs (as someone said their pit did) and hid instead of biting. I honestly and serioulsy thought about adopting her for myself. She now has a wonderful home in Texas!
Another one also came from Katrina, he was found weeks after the hurricane with a collar embedded in his neck. He was also a very lovely dog who came into the rescue being dog aggressive. He learned and when he left for his forever home he was getting along with every dog at the rescue.
I also have a neighbor who owns 2 pit bulls. The dogs are chained up 24/7 (very depressing), and never get any attention. (I am still trying to decide what I can do to help) They have gotten loose twice now, all the other neighbors were terrified they were going to be eaten by these dogs. We caught them and all they wanted to do was play! No aggressive tendancies at all, despite living with such a poor excuse for an owner.
I could list all of the dogs at the rescue and tell you about their wonderful personalities. Despite being treated like poo by people they still love people and the only thing you have to worry about with them is getting licked to death. They are wonderful dogs and I believe their smile says it all. And in a few years down the road, my next dog WILL be a

it bull or an Am. Staff.
I urge you (as I urge all pro BSL people) to contact your local pit bull rescue group or Am Staff breed club and to ask if you can meet one. I guarentee you once you meet a pit you will change your mind about them. They are by far the sweetest breed I have had the privlage of meeting.
I am sure there are some mean ones out there, but they arent mean by nature, they have to be taught to be mean. I have also met mean Labradors, mean Goldens, mean GSDs, mean Dobermans, mean Poodles, mean Rat terriers, mean Cocker Spaniels, the list can go on and on.
I have also heard that the breeds I have (Dalmatians and GSD) are vicious and aggressive. I have actually had people sneer at me when I told them I had Dalmatians and ask how I could live with such a vicious breed. I am also curious as to know which breed you have.
About the lab attacking thing too, not too long ago I read a story about a lab who KILLED a child! Any dog can attack.
