    average cost of a lab or weim

    hello, lab or weim owners...just wondering how much a labrador retriever or weimaraner would cost in a month, 6 mths, a 1yr?

    I would think the costs are very similar.  Do a search on the board for first year costs.  You'll see it is very expensive and always varies depending on how spoiled and stuff your dog is.  But both dogs are big so food, flea care, etc. all cost more than for a smaller dog.
    • Gold Top Dog
    And it also depends on what area you are from. It would most likely be more expensive in the northeast or the west coast as opposed to in the south or the midwest.

    Hmmm... let's see:

    Food, Bowls, Collar with tags, Leash, Harness, Toys, Bed, Grooming tools, Shampoo, Obedience class, Regular and emergency vet visits, Spay/neuter surgery, Medicine (ie deworming, heartworm ;prevention, tick/flea prevention, etc.)...

    The answer? A lot! [:D] (But that goes for all dogs.)

    Most purebreds from reputable breeders cost roughly the same amount, so I'd assume a Lab or a Weim would be about the same initially.I made a list a while ago of everything my Toller puppy will need and how much each thing will cost (roughly) and I think it came to about $3000 or something like that. But my initial buying price is going to be $1500...your dog may cost less in that respect, and if you go through rescue it will be considerably less. The $3000 only includes the pup's first year though. You will probably also need different things than I do, but normally it will cost between 2-5 thousand dollars within the first year. That's what I've been told anyway, and that's what my family has experienced.

    Here's a list of everything I'll need aswell as prices for my new puppy, which will be similar to what you'll need I'm sure:
    • Actual puppy - $1500
    • Leash (my preference is leather) - $30
    • First collar - $12
    • Next collar - $19 (I buy embroidered collars for my dogs though, so if you get a basic collar it will be cheaper)
    • Harness (for hiking or something) - $30
    • City license - $30
    • Vaccines - $500 (again, might be more, might be less...depending on your vet)
    • ID tag - $15
    • Crate - $130 (Labs & Weims are larger than Tollers, so you'll probably pay more)
    • Obedience classes - $300+
    • Various toys - $100+
    • Nylabones - $50
    • Food & water dishes - $25
    • Food (if I'm still feeding kibble, will be cheaper probably is I feed raw) - $60 a month
    • Bed - $40
    • Training treats - $80
    • Shampoo/conditioner - $30
    • Agility classes (after a year old) - $300

    Total = $3251.00

    That isn't including a few other things I may need/want (ex: grooming table, unexpected vet bills, etc.) and I could be forgetting a few necessities. Either way, owning a dog certainly isn't a cheap thing.

    oh my ! 10k Huh??

    Haha!!  I was DEAD wrong!!  I cited $10K *without* including the cost of the dogwalker.  I keep meticulous records and this is the actual cost of the first year just from my Amex.  I'm sure I've also dropped alot of cash along the way on treats, toys, etc.  Keep in mind that I do live in NYC where Vets, Training, Boarding, etc. ;probably cost about twice as much as other parts of the country.   Here goes:

    $  1,500 - Purchase Price
    $  1,090 - Puppy Supplies: XL crate, food, bowls, toys, collar, leash, bed, brushes, nail clippers, stypic pads, ear cleaner, potty pads, petastic, poop bags, treats, clickers, books, shampoo, toy chest, tags, dog license, seat belt, easywalk harness, 20 ft.lead
    $     160 - Initial Vet Visit including shots
    $     100 - Heartworm (started with HeartGuard, switched to Interceptor)
    $       75 - Flea and Tick:  Various Essential Oil Tinctures + Frontline just in case
    $     110 - New Vet Initial Visit, exam + microchip
    $     170 - 16 week shots + exam + nail clipping
    $      950 - Neuter Surgery
    $      375 - 2nd surgery to repair stitches that Slick removed
    $      625 - Basic Obedience
    $      575 - Surgery to remove mass + biopsy/lab
    $      175 - New (larger) bed, collar, harness
    $      250 - Emergency Vet
    $   2,400 - Food - EVO/ NV pre-made raw 200/month
    $      300 - Supplements: Fish oil, Coconut oil, Ester C, Kefir, ACV, Milk Thistle
    $      525 - 5 Days Boarding
    $      625 - 2nd Level Obedience
    TOTAL without dogwalker
    $ 10,005

    $   4,200 - Dogwalker - first six months twice a day $35/day
    $   3,600 - Dogwalker - 6+ months once a day for 1.5 hours $30/day
    Grand Total!!!!
    $ 17,805

    you guys are making me not want to get a dog..
    the lab that i'm interested in will be $1200 and it will have had its first shots and dewormed...

    So does it get cheaper after the first year or it's pretty consistent at looking to spend roughly $3k a yr?
    • Gold Top Dog
    It's marginally less expensive through the young adult years.  You'll still have food, toys, treats, HW/Flea and Tick, licensing, dog walking (me), titers (me), boarding, and any advanced training you may do.  But some of the larger, initial costs will go away (neutering, vaccinations, crate) .  You must always be prepared for unexpected Vet costs.  I never anticipated that Slick would remove his neuter stitches on the first night, or get stung by a bee and have an allergic reaction.  He had  a mass of lymphatic tissue in his cheek that had to be removed, etc..   You should also be prepared for the potential cost of health issues as your dog ages.

    Oh and if you are getting a Lab... there is the unavoidable cost to replace damaged items!   There is no way around this one, I'm afraid.  Shoes, eyeglasses, remote controls, dog beds (Slick's on his 3rd), cell phones, books, DVD's, etc.  I've heard of (and experienced) MUCH worse than this little list!!  No matter how well your Lab is trained and supervised, he will get into something.   Owning a dog is NOT cheap! lol  but worth every single penny [;)]

    My son just got this dog from a breeder for $500.00  and that's not counting all the toys, food and vet bills.  For us it's worth every red cent.  Tank...the older dog, his  previous owner paid over $800.00. And just gave him to me.  Better than hitting the lottery.

    Holy cow Christine, $950 for neuter surgery?!?! This is why I could never live in NYC....
    • Gold Top Dog
    The cost will be less if you:
    1) adopt from a shelter and
    2) adopt a young adult dog (may avoid the damage to beds, other objects etc. associated with puppy phase and maybe even obedience training, and spay, early vaccines, crate, etc.)

    You should not have much trouble finding a lab on petfinder or at a local shelter.

    Yep! I did pay extra for an IV drip though. It's all relative, you make more here as well. The thing that *really* kills me is the dogwalker, I could go a bit cheaper - but then we'd be doing "pack" walks and he wouldn't get enough time/exercise.

    I totally agree with the older dog/adoption scenario. Slick is the first Lab I've ever purchased as a puppy and it is considerably less expensive to go the older dog, rescue route. I have to say though - my 11 year old, adopted, retired Guide Dog did her fair share of damage!
