Tonto Update:

Thanks Lani. We have been struggling along. But once I got him away from the barn yesterday we did pretty well. [:)]
Can someone verbalize body position and movement for backing in the saddle? I am missing something here. I have some video but will have to wade through a lot to find backing. I only have to say "back" to Jet. I'll lean back if he is slow about responding.

I rode for about 30-40 minutes yesterday. We did much better going away from the barn and got some backing. He did spook/bolt on me near the end of the ride so we kept going for a bit. I don't know what spooked him but it was windy and Jet spooked on me too earlier in the afternoon.

I am crunched for time today but will try to get a ride on him this afternoon.

Tonto is looking great! When you ask for the back up, be sure to squeeze with your legs. Keep him from moving forward with pressure on the reins. The legs ask for movement, and the reins tell him which direction to move.

Perfect appylady. Thanks, that's what I needed to hear. We backslid a little yesterday. Last night it rained and more rain tonight so didn't ride him as the roundpen is muddy. He is looking pretty good isn't he. [;)]

    How's this for a butt?

    • Gold Top Dog
    Maybe this worked?

We got stopped dead in our training tracks by the rain.

Today is the one year anniversary of his injury. I had hoped to back up and riding trails by today.

Chiropractor came on Saturday. Besides the usual being amazed that Tonto survived he said Tonto was pretty sore. Especially his shoulders and spine. Jet was fine except for his hips. We got more rain so won't get to try Tonto until the round pen dries. I may get a ride on Jet this evening.

So, how's he doing??   Tonto doing well?  Been getting to ride?  And how's Jet, his spunky self?

I had a chiro done on Stryder yesterday - I'm waiting to hear from my friend on how he did.  I think chiro is a great, great thing [:)]
    • Gold Top Dog
We had a couple rides in the pen and I was going to ride out and about but of course he decided to have a bent shoe. Then he lost it so R to the rescue this morning and he put a shoe back on. So hoping to get a ride on him this afternoon.
I noticed that he does well clockwise around the pen but counter-clockwise is not so good. We will have some more chiro sessions. But the two of them run around here like nuts and I have seen him beat Jet racing around more than once. R thinks he is fine to ride. We are having a bit of a respect issue we need to work on though.

Jet is his handsome self. [:)] K and I have been riding almost everyday even though I should be working. [&:] I reduced his grain by 1/2 at night and that seems to have solved the sweating problem? (knock on wood)
    • Gold Top Dog
Hey MK - glad that the grain idea has apparently helped with Jet, his handsome-ness [;)] He is reather handsome, isn't he?

Tonto and his chronic problems, it's almost unbelievable!  Glad he's got his shoe back to un-bent [:)]  Also, is R. helping you with Tonto's respect issues?  What have you been doing to work with him on that, if it's not too much to type, that is.  Is he just being a brat, or is it dangerous?

Glad you're riding rather than working, up until recently I've been working rather than riding [:'(]  Yuck. One peice of advice, ride more, work less -- take it from me! [:D]

Tonto decided in the past couple weeks to be a brat. He hasn't really had to do anything for a year. So now that I am asking for something he's not cooperating. Nothing serious. Jerking his feet away, turning his butt towards me, etc... R worked with him for about 10 -15 minutes and there was a big improvement. Yesterday he turned his butt towards me and it got slapped. That got his attention right quick. He jerked his rear foot away from me today and he ended up being backed all the way around the round pen. He decided it was a better idea to stand still and let me do his feet. [;)] I worked him and then rode for about 15 minutes in the pen. It was getting late so I left it at that. He did stand still while I hosed him down so maybe he is reconsidering being a brat. [8|]

Oh, Tonto!  Don't be so hard on yer mama!

What brats they can be when they want to be.  Sounds like you're making him reconsider his decisions though.. I'm sure he'll be back to his normal self soon, though.  He wouldn't be a real horse if he didn't make you work for it a bit.   [;)]   Boy, he's given you quite the introduction to horses hasn't he?  Your experiences have excelerated your education quite a bit... i guess that saying "what doesn't kill ya...." is true!

Hang in there he'll come around soon, by the way you've been handling it [;)]

We have had 3 or 4 rides out around the property. The first was really good but really hard getting him to go away from the barn. The second was still hard getting away from the barn and he did a lot of stumbling. I think he was sore and tired so we cut it short. He was better tonight but I didn't push him to do much just rode around. We are suppose to get some rain and I will be gone all next week so we will have to take another break. But I am happy with the way he is progressing. [sm=clapping hands smiley.gif]
