I just wanted to know if you do your check ups every year, and how important it really is?

My sister is 47 years old.  She seldom went to the doctor and never had a mammogram.  Around Thanksgiving of last year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer that has spread to her blood, her bones and her stomach.  She was given a few days to a few months to live.

So, is going to the doctor and having your female parts checked out important?  Want my sister's phone number?  You can call her and ask what she thinks. But you better do it soon.

Your county health dept should be set-up for low cost/no cost exams. Most use a sliding scale.  That is what I used in college and where I have referred people to who thought they might be pregnant, etc, who did not have insurance.

Glad to see you made the appt - Now PLEASE keep it ![:)]

When you're done whuppin & shooting i'll hide you out in FL.  Never aided & abetted a criminal before so should be fun!

LMAO, don't worry, you guys were all very helpful. I plan on going and I will not cancel.

Thanks Billy I can always count on you.

HPV is a reason to go, if nothing else.

I am 26 and I had the precancerous cervix cells too.  Going once a yr. is not tough, so do it!

Jen... try Blue Cross for insurance.  I am switching school districts so technically I am unemployed this summer and need to get my own health coverage.  I am doing bluecross and it is only $110 a month!  They have a few different options, all of which are much cheaper than if I continued the Cigna coverage through my school for $437!

Just because you feel fine doesn't mean you are!  Just read Yanke's post about all the things wrong but feels and looks perfectly fine!

I have to 'fess up and say that I'm not the greatest about making Dr. appointments.  But ... I get called to participate in a lot of studies, and that usually involves a much more comprehensive exam than just the routine pap smear.  I think I get called often because it's hard to find women *past a certain age* who aren't on any prescription meds and never took hormones, which could skew the study. If I'm in a study, I know I WILL be where I'm supposed to be on time, and do whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing. The one I'm in now required not only the routine pap smear & mammogram, but an EKG, a bone density scan, an endometrial biopsy and a vaginal ultrasound - none of which were fun, but all paid for by the company sponsoring the study. I figure if there's anythng *off* going on, one of those tests should uncover it.

Wow, HPV or cervical cancer isn't as uncommon as I thought. I've had actually cervical cancer twice. Both found after having both of my daughters. Both times had to be removed. But all is well now.

I would always suggest a check up once a year. Cancer is scary, no matter what form.

How coincidental that this topic would come up when I have to go to THAT doctor tomorrow. Ugh, how I hate it, but thankfully, I'm not seeing the same dr. There was no winning with that evil, big-haired woman. She was a health nut, which, of course, makes the whole crotch doctor visit 100 times worse, and I'm certainly not the picture of health so she insulted everytime I went there.

Im 23 and just had my first pap since I was around 15.  They say your supposed to do it every year no matter what your age so Im gonna try to keep going on time.  A mamogram is something we dont really need until we are over 40 right?  Ive never had one of those.

It depends, but I had a baseline mammo done at 35, but more because of family history of cancer.  I think it's a good idea to get it if your insurance company will pay for it though.

I'm 27 and I go for a pap (full woman checkup) YEARLY.  I think it's a very important check up for so little effort, if you weigh it out.  Haven't done Mamograms yet but my Dr. did tell me that although I'm still young, I should do self-exams at home and start getting mamograms around 30-35.
