I read Gilead and it was a nice read and a poignant story (it's an epistolary novel - letters written from an older, dying minister to his very young son who will grow up without him).

I read Gilead a couple of months ago! It was good... definitely a book you have to give your full attention to to really get into the pacing and the beauty of it.

Lor I am so glad you started this thread, I read about 4 books a month, and recently have been reading dog stuff so I know you guys have read them.
But I did read and love Night by Elie Weisel it was Oprah's book club pick. Wow what a book.
• Gold Top Dog
Oh, I'll have to look into that one.  I've always liked all the Oprah books I've read.

Oh, the BEST Koontz book is Lightning!!!

And for the NASCAR buff, I just finished listening to St Dale by Sharon McCrumb.  I am not a car race buff, but I really enjoy McCrumb's other books that take place in the Appalachia.  Those books usually follow two story lines, one current one past, that intertwine in an interesting way.  I couldn't even name my favorite of hers : Songcatcher, She Walks These Hills, Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, Ballad of Frankie Silver (way good) etc.  Lots of interesting characters, told in an understated manner.

For other fans of southern writers, try Anne Rivers Siddons.  I see on amazon, she has a book I haven't read, must put that on reserve at the library.  The first of hers I read was Peachtree Road and it could be my favorite, but I also liked Up Island and Nora! Nora!.

Other ideas:

• East of Eden
• books by Rosamunde Pilcher (Shellseakers, September, etc) great summer reads!
• books by Maeve Binchy  (also great summer beach books)
• books by Eugina Price (southern, summer reads, a bit romanitc)
• Mists of Avalon (if you like the King Arthur books this one is a MUST)
• books by Ruth Rendell (a little dark, but usually has poetic justice)
• if you feel up to it, Peter the Great by Massie was one of the most amazing books I've ever read.  For something a little shorter, try Nicholas and Alexandra
• books by Richard Adams (I don't think I read all of the one about the bear, but Watership Down, Girl in the Swing, and the short stories are really good.)

Deb - I hope you enjoy it!  It's just one of those books that left me open mouthed in shock, and my mind racing.  Plus, I think it is exceptionally well-written.  Let me know what you think when you are done?

Kate if this was 10 years ago I would be up all night reading this book straight through, my eyes are shot and so I fall asleep from reading too long. But I love her writting style, and so much to think about already! What makes a great book to me is one in which I learn one new thing, I learn a new word, I laugh , I cry, and it makes me go hmmm, and so far this book has and I've only read about 10 chapters! I am one happy camper.

Summertime is the best for reading! I'm so happy that Willow posted this thread!

I love love love Maeve Binchy..Ever since I stole Circle of Friends off of my sister's bookshelf, I was instantly hooked! I think Quentin's is my favorite...

I tend more towards Chick Lit...I like Marian Keyes and Jane Green. I would recommend ANYTHING by them. [;)]

Right now I'm reading Anybody Out there? by Marian Keyes. Have not been able to put it down but beware, it's a tearjerker!

Is there anyone else who just loves the way bookstore's smell??? I walk in and go "aahhhh...."

I also really liked, I do but I don't by Cara Lockwood.

Gosh, I'll be here all night. I love to read.

Harry Potter is also very high up on my list of personal fave's. You don't have to be eleven years old just to enjoy it. I assure you. [;)]

Oooo I LOVE Marian Keyes. It's chick lit, but oddly insightful chick lit. Last Chance Saloon was great. Another good chick lit was The Devil Wears Prada-I can't wait for the movie.

I like Grisham's other (other than legal) stuff. A Painted House was good.

I've also read and enjoyed the Harry Potter series, and one (non-fiction) I could read over and over is Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air.

Have you read any of the Pilcher books?  A lot like Binchy.  Try Shellseakers or September.

Anita Shreve and Alice (?) Hoffman also write good reads.

Secret Life of Bees and Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd

Oh, and everyone must, must, must read The Kite Runner.  Very loving tale, very moving.  That one I wish I hadn't read so I could read it for the first time.

And the YaYa books.  I think there's about 3 of them.

Pat Conroy books - Water is Wide is his finest work.  (I told you I was a fan of those Souther writers.)

Right now I'm on a nonfiction kick so I haven't read anything real recent.

ORIGINAL: my2saints

I'm tired of John Grisham. I need a new mystery/ drama author. Suggestions???

Sue Grafton, Mary Higgins Clark, Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson

The early works by Grafton and Cornwell (particularly Cornwell, anything after Black Notice stinks) are the best.

I haven't had too much time to read lately, but I do have a humerous story.  When I was about eight months pregnant with my daughter, we finally settled on the name "Ella Guinevere."  Being very bored with all of the time off in the last month, I Googled the name and found the book "Ella in Europe".

Turns out this guy has a lab that he named Ella Guinevere, whom he took to Europe for a treat.  He talked about how life in Europe was so much different.  How restaurants love having dogs come in, and many other public places welcome canines.  That was a good book.

I just haven't read it recently. :o)

Kelly - I LOVED Into Thin Air SO much - my first time through, not long after it was first released, I was up till 3 am reading when I got to the end.  I simply could not close my eyes and sleep while (in my head) they were out there exposed in that storm.  The next evening, I started it again and read all the way through at a more leisurely pace.  And then a few months later, I suggested it for my book group and read it again.  When we met, I had printed out pictures of various parts of the climb for everyone to look at!
