but just b/c it is called Cowtown doesn't mean there are cows everywhere people!  This place got that name a LONG time ago.

Well Sarah they DO drive cows down the major areas of Ft Worth and Dallas pretty darned often...LMAO! I came to Texas from California in 1998...and I will say this...A LOT of the sterotypes I found to be true lol. I have seen plenty of pickups....an incredible amount, plenty of cowboys....or shall I say, men in cowboy get up, just out and about PLENTY of country music (ack) played in restaurant and stores and everyplace(that's certainly unique to at least this geographic area!)...and heard plenty of twang. In fact accoridng to my Mom who moved out here in 2003.....I've developed some of my own twang [;)].

To it's credit I believe people here are more polite, friendlier to strangers, and take more pride in thier heritage as Texans than in California.

When I came here it was a lot of the earthquake assumptions (which IMO are far less scary than a tornado)...comments about plastic surgery (everyone knows thats SOUTHERN California and almost a different STATE than where I'm from..."Northern" Cali)...and expecting me to talk like a Valley Girl!

I can#%92t say much about Illinois, haven#%92t even been here for a full year but the first thought I had when we got here was “well people weren#%92t lying, there IS corn EVERYWHERE!” [:D]
I#%92ve heard people say a LOT of funny things about Germany though…. A few years ago in Chicago there was a fire in a club and tons of people died because everybody panicked and they trampled people to death. The following week on radio they were talking about what exactly happened and the radio moderator says “Usually things like this only happen in third world countries like Germany!” Woohoo [:D]
Last year my friends and I were sitting at a bar in my home town when a young (maybe 19 years old) soldier walked up. He just got to Germany, we all chatted for a while when he asked “So where in Germany exactly is Rome?” I don#%92t drink but wow did I need a shot after that one! LOL

Besides that everything else you hear about Germany is probably true [:D]

...The husband of my wife's daughter mentioned how it would take 4 hours to drive the lengthwise distance of New Jersey....

That must have been one heck of a traffic jam!  LOL  It really ponly takes about 2 hours to drive the lenght of NJ, and, for the record, less than an hour to drive the width.

I remember before my husband & I got married, I thought all NJ was was chemical plants and the shore.  Actually, it wasn't until we moved down here two years later that I believed my husband about the mountains and farms.

Grew up in MA live in NH now. When I speak to customers on the phone they usually say.. "wow you pronounce you R's" like it's a miracle.

We do not all speak like Kennedy's :)
They also think we are buried under show the majority of the year...

The one thing that people think that bothers me is how deep they think the accent is. It's much more subtle. And the accent varies depending on where you are.

same here. i am glad ron pointed that out. in sc accents vary from where you grew up in the state and believe it or not whether you grew up in a rural location or a city.

Let's see - the temp is ALWAYS  a balmy 72 degrees.  We surf down the coast from town to town, or roller blade.  We always wear bikinis and have a good stock of board wax. When the *big quake* hits, CA will break off from the rest of the country and float off to become and independent country. There are always movie stars at the local Starbucks.  It NEVER rains in Southern CA. We've ALL had plastic surgery. We tend to live on nuts and berries and organic fruits & veggies. No matter how often people look at the map, they just don't get that CA is about 1,000 miles long, so if you're visiting someone in San Diego, you can't run up to Sacramento or San Francisco to meet someone for lunch and drive back - not in the same day, anyway.[:D]

Oh, yeah, the earthquake thing. I never did understand how people who suffer through hurricane or tornado season every year could look at me in horror and say, "But aren't you scared of earthquakes?"  [:D]

What I want is to try an authentic english pastie.

Head over to your nearest Celtic festival and no doubt your wish will be granted.

The one rumor that is true is how big Texas is. The husband of my wife's daughter mentioned how it would take 4 hours to drive the lengthwise distance of New Jersey. In Texas, it takes 4 hours to get from our house to my in-law's house.

One thing though, if you cut Alaska in HALF, it would still be the TWO biggest states in the union, with Texas third. That's how big Alaska is. Way, waaaaay bigger than Texas.

Sometimes people just feel they have to argue about this and swear up and down that Texas is the biggest state. Nope. Alaska is.

When I visited Texas, though, the food was certainly huge! Every time we went out to eat the portions were gigantic!

A little OT here, but I know Alaska and Texas are quite a bit bigger in size than CA is and I'm pretty sure Alaska doesn't have the population we do. What about Texas? About how many of you are there?  We're just about at 36 million & rising fast - and that's just the legal ones counted by the census.[:D]

I live in Mississippi, everything you hear about It is true[sm=biggrin.gif]

Hahahahaha! I lived in MS for the past three years, and I'm in agreement.

Louisiana stereotypes...I don't even know where to begin, but I can promise you that not everyone is like Bobby Boucher and company in The Waterboy, although Brett has an uncle who speaks just like Farmer Fred (seriously lol). Alligator is also not a staple in our diets.
