I think this is the article you may have read.  I read it to while I was munching on my snickers drinking my diet dr pepper!  LOL

That is a good one and also the same article that I quoted from in the original post... but I took it directly off the WEBMD site and not off of CBS who was posting it..    Thanks for looking though!![:)]

I work in the fast food industry and it is not uncommon for customers to order the super-duper 3 patty burger smothered in cheese topped with a pound of bacon, jumbo fries, and top it all off with a 42 oz diet Coke.

LOL that always cracks me up too.....It's like it makes the whole meal diet or something!

I drink Diet Mountain Dew, but not for weight loss... I have loved Mountain Dew since I was a kid, but I found as I got older the sweetness is something I just can't stand anymore so I switched to diet and love it.. now if I drink a regular Mountain Dew I swear my tongue is coated with sugar and I can't stand it.

With being pregnant my doc says I can still have one Diet Dew a day.. so that is my indulgence especially during this heat!

One more thought. As you read the papers, watch the news CNN anything, they talk about the increasing weight problem in the US. So then you go to the vending machines or grocery stores, and you can't buy 12 oz (or smaller) sodas they are all the 20 oz bottles. The size of the chips bags are increasing with "X"% free increase. Is it just me or what. This is rediculous!

I know personally I have issues with portion control, I am not "that" overweight but would like to be thinner (it doesn't help that my husband is a stick and eats everything) it just seems food companies should make portions smaller (and cheaper would be nice).

I use those 20 oz soda bottles like some people use the 2 litre ones. It's just too much!

And all the people that work at the movie theater stare at me like I'm crazy when they try to get me to get the next size up for the same price. Sorry, I don't need to eat all that so I don't care if it's free, it's a total waste.

In the various food service industries, the actual FOOD is the least of their expenses. They can increase the amounts of food exponentially and it makes very little impact to their bottom line, but it keeps "more is better!" customers very satisfied.

i am not sure if this is true, but i read somewhere once that one of the problems with diet soft drinks is the amount of sodium in them. it causes you to retain water among other bad things.

i agree with the moderation comment though. i think in moderation even sugary soft drinks are ok.

Portion size is one of the leading contributors to obesity in this country.  We have lost ALL CONCEPT of what normal even is.   I had no idea how much I was eating until I started really changing my eating habits about 5 months ago.  Now I am shocked at how little it takes me to be full and I am actually sickened when I look at an over abundance of food.  It takes time and a lot of work though to change our bad habits and unfortunately the food service industry doesn#%92t help us along.

Interesting comment Brad on the salt in sodas.. I hadn't hear that before has anyone else?

According to this bottle of Diet Mountain Dew that I just conjured out of thin air (ahem) it only has 35 mg of sodium per serving. That's less than 3% of your sodium RDA for the day.

also the same article that I quoted from in the original post

Ooops!  Sorry - I copied & pasted too quickly - must have been that caffeine/artificial sweetener rush!  This is the one I should have posted (talks about diet soda vs. regular in the role of metabolic syndrome):

I thought I'd heard that too, but my Diet Coke has only 40 mg but it does actually say "VERY LOW SODIUM", so maybe some aren't so low.  My Healthy Choice lunch has 500mg!!  I've always known that if I needed to cut back on my sodium intake, these frozen meals would be the 1st to go.

i did a little searching and found this....

the first responder obviously read/heard the same info as me. so i am not sure where this info came from, but someone is putting it out there as fact even though it may not be.

Technically one is low in sodium but compared to water (unless it is softened) it stll has a considerable amount of sodium.  Especially when most people drink more than one a day (also - check the serving size, most show 8 oz on a 12 oz can).
So - one 32oz Gulp from 7-11 will have 160 mg of sodium.

    Moderation is the key.
