At various times my oak tree has had several families of wood ducks in it.  I never knew that wood ducks nest in TREES!!  They have their babies and then when the ducklings are just a few days old, Mom marches them out on a branch (like 25 feet up) and PUSHES them off the branch to the ground!!

After about half of them have 'jumped' she will fly down and the rest will follow.  Then she'll gather them all up and make for the nearest lake (I'm in Florida -- there are zillions of lakes).

But one morning several years ago, I was getting ready to back my car out and <<>> this tiny duckling falls out of my tree!!  My protective instincts kick in and I'm wondering how I'm gonna deal with THIS!! and <<>><<>> two more fall down!!

Suddenly before I can even figure what's going on <<>><<>><<>> it's RAINING DUCKS!!!

12 of them all told when Momma gathered them up and waddled across my lawn.

I've actually 'seen' it happen like three times and without fail I get THE biggest kick out of it.  Nature is just awesome.

Nature is very awsome, I agree!  Wonder why she pushes them out of a tree like that...?  To weed out weaklings...?

I would so freak out too my first time seeing baby duckling falling from the tree. It seems weird for them to push the babies out of the nest even if they are a few days old. I'm surprise that they live. Now that is a hard way to get down.

LOL I feel stupid... they are just getting down?  For some reason I thought she ment the mom took them UP only to push them off... duh amy... lol...
    • Gold Top Dog
She probably pushes them out of the tree because they won't jump otherwise.
    • Gold Top Dog
That is a neat picture!  How do you feed ducklings?

Oops, I guess I thot the rest of the world was smarter than *I* was the first time -- yeah, she pushes them off the limb to get them TO the ground to take to her 'other' nest that is on the ground near a lake.  While they are so tiny, they don't want Mom to be a "sitting duck" for predators (like gators down here) -- but once they can move on their own they're safer on the ground (in the tree they'd be too easy prey for Owls.

I spent weeks worrying, the first time, on how the heck she was gonna get them all back UP there! LOL then I found out they have two nests and felt better! *grin*

Feed baby ducklings?  Hmmm -- maybe jam and peanut butter?  After all they are already Quackers!

OH CALLIE--- STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and the lady asked 'how' not 'what' -- you were just dying to tell a really BAD BAD joke!)

Very cool, Angel.  Must see fluffy ducklings.....

Wood ducks are so colorful too!  Angel, good luck with all the babies!!

We had a minor traffic jam this morning with a pair of Canada geese and 3 goslings!  lol.. they were just wandering in the entrance way.  Oh and for any of you out there that have these kinds of geese around, at this time of year, they can't fly.  They are molting their flight  feathers and can't fly till they grow back in.
