Accents

    Yeah ya do!
When I moved from Cali to Texas EVERYONE asked where I was from...because of my "accent" [;)] I am highly adaptive tho and when around an accent I pick it up almost immediately enough that people think I'm mocking them. I can't help it tho...and I do it without meaning to. I have a marked drawl now...my Mom who only moved out here a few years ago from Cali always teases me about it. I can hear even stronger one's in my kiddos.

Elias and Lily say "Kay-yat" instead of  "cat". "Fay-yence" instead of "Fence" etc....it's quite cute!

LOL Shelley- to me, a Californian accent is still an accent!

[sm=rofl.gif] lol....   it was more of a joke really.. I am sure I have an accent to those who live in other parts of the country! [:D]  I enjoy hearing how  individual words are said differently.. I get distracted by that actually and then miss half of what someone is saying...lol!

I feel that this entire thread was started to make fun of southern accents, & I will be reporting it to a mod.

Are you serious? The southern accent is one of many being discussed here. Just because you got your feelings hurt means the whole thread is attacking you, and you think a mod has to do something about that? What about whoever said they hate German accents? Better yet, what about those that said they love specific accents? Maybe they're then making fun of anyone without that accent? Sheesh this forum is ridiculous lately...

I LOVE the different accents actually.. of course that might be because I am from Cali and don't have one myself

That's what I always say Shelly! "I don't have an accent..I speak totally normally..." [;)]

My best friend spent a lot of his childhood in Kentucky (though equal amounts in Miami, and some in New England as well), and has the slightest southern accent. Words like "bike" become something like "bahhh-ike." When I first met him, I made fun of him constantly, so he started consciously shortening his I sounds, and I found I missed them, so I stopped making fun of him, and for the most part he's back to normal.  [:D]

This is the second thread in less than a week that has been offensive to southerners. We were called racists in the previous thread, & now our accents have been ridiculed. It is OFFENSIVE!

I would expect no less outrage from Californians, or New Englanders if I chose to ridicule them.

I'm quite surprised no one has mentioned the "Joisey" accent...

I was born and raised there for 32 years and I can tell you that soooo many people give us credit (lol) for what comes from Staten Island folk IMO....

    I don't say fagettaboutit....and I certainly don't say "Joisey."

    It's simply a sterotype, and I don't get offended.

Currently, I live TX and when I first moved here many people asked me where I was from...I told them New Jersey...and they would said, "I love your accent...you're very well spoken." LOL..I loved that.  And being here eight years I still haven't lost it[:D].

I think that this statement proves my point entirely.  People, admittedly, make fun of someone's accent until the person feels intimidated into changing the way he or she speaks.  It's basic bullying, plain & simple.

pollypuzu- I love people that say 'joisey' and 'boiger'! Do people actually talk like that? I wanna go to Staten Island! I'm really excited now [:D].

I'm going to give the Southerners a thumbs up...totally OT but for what it's worth...

I go back to visit our entire family who live between NJ and CT every year 2 or three times.  It's my home and I do miss it.

However, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate southern hospitality.  Back home, manners seem to be left to the curb.  Friendly hellos are few, and everyone is in a rush and can seem pushy.  Not many say excuse me.

Give me the friendliness of the South anyday.  I can strike up a conversation with a complete stranger and say "It was nice talking to you."  When I walk, anyone I pass says "Hello."  I know more about my neighbors who I've lived next to for 3 years than the neighbors I lived next to for 30 back home. I love the South.

What the hell is a "boiger?" LOL[;)]

I say Berr-ger, if that's what you mean.  I thing Daffy Duck says "boiger."  edited to add...I don't know if he's originally from Staten Island.
    • Gold Top Dog
In reply to your question... I have yet to meet anyone from NJ that actually says New "Joisey."  And if I've offended any Staten Island folk...sorry![;)]
    • Gold Top Dog
LOL ...  so let me get this straight... people from Staten Island don't go out for boigers and cawfee? [;)]

Okay, 1) I was 14. Not that that's an excuse for ignorance, I'm just saying... 2) That boy can't be bullied. 3) When I say I made fun of him, I mean I giggled and pointed it out. He would then ;purposely say "bike" as quickly as he possibly could as a joke, making fun of himself. When I stopped pointing it out, he stopped thinking about it, and therefore stopped shortening it. I didn't bully some poor southern boy into giving up his accent.

I couldn't care less if people make fun of how I speak, and I think it's sad and a little silly that you think this thread is an attack on the southern culture or something.
