Pots- stainless steel or nonstick

    consider cast iron

Yep, it is dual purpose in that it is heavy enough to wack your hubby with to make him act right! hehe J/K

My grandfather  gave me a 4" cast iron skillet as a shower gift, with the instructions to use it on hubby when he got out of line![sm=rotfl.gif]

That's too funny!  So for things like cooking an omelet, eggs or pancakes, can you do it in a stainless steel frying pan without making a mess?  I cook quite a bit myself, but I just don't think I could master that.

Speaking of cast iron though.  I watched Good Eats last night (love that show!) and he made fried chicken and used a cast iron pan.  It looked absolutely delicious!

    I [sm=floating.gif]your grandfather!

I think stainless steel pots are for the savvy cooks who are precise with heat and timing.  I am sloppy and forgetful - therefore, I burn stuff!  I have a beautiful expensive covered pan I got as a gift, but it's stainless steel and I hate it - it sits in the sink soaking after EVERY meal with 1/4 of said meal stuck to the bottom!!

(hmm... they say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and yet I wonder why I'm single... points to ponder...[8|][:D])

I don't think you do...BUT if you like/have Parrots/Birds...do NOT cook in Teflon coated pans around them as they will get sick and possibly die.

This is pretty much the reason I'm a stainless girl.  I've got two birds and don't want to take the chance of someone being careless with the Teflon pans and overheating it, which is what causes the fumes.

I do know you can get non-stick that doesn't have Teflon, but the chemicals scare me off a bit as well.

Paige, don't scrub.  Put some water in the pan and some baking soda and put it on to boil.

My grandmother never used anything but cast iron and she made the best fried chicken in the world.

Hmmm - good to know!  I just let it soak and take a sponge to it periodically as it's soaking.  Baking soda.. interesting!!  Will do, thx Billy!

I always get baking soda and baking powder confused.  What you want is whichever comes in the yellow box.  Not what you buy in the red can.

Even when I am following a recipe, I always double check....okay, it calls for baking POWDER...yes, this is baking powder...okay...

I prefer non-stick, too.  But my real preference is to just let the non-stick pots & pans stay in the cabinet and go out ... or get take-out. [:)]

The best non-stick pans I own have a funny triangle with a number 2 imprinted into the bottom...they come right out of the freezer, out of their cardboard box, go right into the microwave, then right into the recycling bin at the end of the night...[;)][8D]

We use pans that are similar to cast iron.  Yep, they are heavy.  We have a gas stove now and they're awesome to use with it...the flame does take getting used to.  They are called Magnalite.  We bought them many moons ago, maybe 13 or 14 years ago...they've got a 100 year warranty.  Pricing is not cheap but below Calphalon.  I think they've stopped making that particular metal and are now going to cast aluminum or stainless.

We love cooking with them and they can also be used in the oven.  Even with the rubbery material on the handle.  They periodically need to be seasoned with oil.

OT but true- you never want to eat a cake if you mixed up the two.  The results are quite disgusting.
