That'd be nice, but not all cities public transportation is commuter friendly. Oklahoma City's is geared much more toward low income transportation.

it is true that many cities have not so commuter friendly public transportation. i dont think that any city intentionally gears the public transportation to any one segment of the population. lower income people naturally ride it more often as they many times tend not to have their own cars. if more middle class and suburban people rode public, then it wouldnt necessarily seem to be geared for lower income people. I drive a smaller SUV (an Explorer) and really I rarely use it, except for hauling dogs, but I was thanking God for it Monday when I was able to load 3 big dogs and 5 people and get the heck out of dodge when there were tornados near my house.

OK, if taking the bus isn't an option for YOU, find other ways to conserve that one gallon per week.  I don't send anyone into the store these days.  I'll pay the extra 20 cents for a gallon of milk at the store DH passes on his way HOME before I'll pay for the gas to drive 12 miles round trip to the cheaper place.  I'm still saving money. And as bad as gas is right now, with him having to commute to work until we can get moved I'm gonna save every single gallon that I can save.

Very true, and the way I should have phrased it is that most of the stops are in low-income areas, which makes sense with supply and demand. If there were more stops in the professional districts and suburban areas it would be used a lot more. It's a catch-22.

Except hydrogen gas isn't just floating around everywhere. It's not a very stable compound and quickly binds to other atoms (like oxygen). So, at least this is what I gathered in Gen Chem last week (my instructor specifically mentioned hydrogen powered cars); we would just be defering pollution and reliance onto yet another fossil fuel : coal. I, personally, like the thought of ethanol or another biofuel. Right now, I wish there were more E-85 models and stations. Regardless, I really think we need to get off the fossil fuels, for more than one reason.

I, for one, am sick of SUVs, pick-ups and minivans. I have no problem with people who actually use them for the purpose... but these people who drive around Yukon XLs, Hummers, and Excursions just as a status symbol need to rethink their priorities(especially the ones that turn around and whine and complain about global warming). -sorry, this is a tangent part.

i never said hydrogen was the solution. i just think it is interesting. a group of from i think NOLS came to one of the local universities about a month ago and they were driving an RV that ran on used cooking oil. that was very interesting as well. luckily here one of the biggest gas station chains is selling and promoting the use of E-85 and "Bio-Willie" (for big trucks in place of diesel). so it is fairly readily available.

i agree with you about the suv/pick-up/minivan situation. for me, if you drive a "duallie" and live in a sub division on a 1/4 acre or less, you have no right to complain about the price of gas.

Gas this morning was 1.07$ a litre... That's 4.04$ a gallon ... *rolling eyes*  Our obed. class is a 20 minute drive and we won't be continuing that after this session.  Gas prices are just too high!

I bike to work most days since it's been "warm".  Public transportation here is ridiculous and I would never use it.  (I live in a small town and buses only go to major centres ... it would take me forever to get to work.)   I'd rather freeze my butt on my bike and get where I'm going in a reasonable amount of time.  I'm close enough that I could run to work too ... it's only 5k but we don't have shower facilities and I can't imagine teaching all day after a 5k run only to run home again.  No one would come anywhere near me!! [:D][;)]

Gas here cost 2.89 a gallon.  Some times Wal*mart is cheaper on the gas then the gas in town. Soon when our shop moves I'll be able to just walk to work instead of driving.

I think the gas here is a little over $3.00 a gallon. I really don't wanna know, but i'm gonna have to find out tomorrow since I need to get some. I really should start riding my bike to the house I work at that's close to me. That kid's mom is the one who loads us into the car to go down the block to the bus stop to pick up her other son, who is almost 11, and is quite capable of walking home. Even if she didn't trust him to walk home, we could walk to meet him, which would be nicer for the dog too.
I'll also be much happier next semester because my friend and I have the same schedule Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so i'll go to her house, then we'll switch off who drives the rest of the way to the train station.

Your gas is cheap compared to here.  After doing some conversions, I think it comes to about $4.80

I just paid $2.92 a gal for gas, here in Salty.  In Utah, large families are the norm.  We (generally speaking) have lots of kids, and animals.  Suv's, minivans, and the like are NOT a status symbol.  We waste more gas taking two smaller compact fuel efficient cars because we can't fit the kids, adults, and pets into one car. Then if I had a SUV or minivan or large truck I can't afford to fill it or insure it to save money instead ofdriving one of two smaller cars. (My sister would drive one car and I drive the other to get the 8 of us anywhere together. I guess in plenty of places the SUV and truck and minivan are status items but so what, it's their money to spend as they like.  That doesn't mean they have to love it getting ripped off at the fuel pump   That kind of thinking is divisive class warefare.  (And NO I am not rich.)  I don't think the CEO of Exxon needs a half a billion dollar retirement package.  That is screwing over the customers.  Maybe this is the type of push we need to not be so dependant on oil from other countries.  Colorado and Wyoming and Utah and Montana have enough shale oil to last this country for hundreds of years.  This has been stated by the Gov of Montana and a senator from Colorado.  Anyway that's my two cents.    Jules

The cheapest gas I was able to find around here today was $2.97.

If it makes anyone feel any better I have to put premium in my car!!!

Its just funny that with crude oil barrell prices being "so high" that the major gas companies are still making RECORD PROFITS. Come on!!!! The price at the pump should reflect crude oil prices per barrell but if companies are making record profits something isn't adding up somewhere. [:@]

I hear ya. The news this week said they have had more people file bankrupt in the last 2 months than in years. It's killing us. Plus our hydro has gone up. I'm still trying to get caught up on my gas bill. I don't know how we are going to do it. My husband is the only one that works, yet the gov't cuts my  child tax in half because we are in a higher income bracket. I'd like the bastards to come see how we are living and then tell me we are well off.

I really wish people would stand up to this crap and boycott the gas stations for a whole 24 hours. Problem is everyone would rather B*&ch than do anything.

Phew... sorry, this just makes me really mad

The only thing boycotting gas stations for 24 hours would do is give more business the next day.  There is no point.  The other "chainletter email" idea is to boycott ExxonMobil since they are the largest and aid in the price wars.  That could possibly work but doubtful, but regardless my bf and I don't use them because of all the crap they do with oil spills and spending more money on pr than cleaning the oil and they had bad history with prejudice with hiring gays, etc.

I don't think we're going to get any help from the *Governator* since most of his big campaign bucks came from oil companies - and even though *George Dubya* is talking a big game, his whole family has been tied up in oil for years, so he's not too likely to put his money where his mouth is, either. They're both making empty promises because elections are looming on the horizon and we'd have to be pretty stupid to believe either one of them.
