Anyway - I do think that whatever "correction" that comes is going to come by way of disease.

I think that, too. Viruses, bacteria, bugs ... overwhelming numbers of little critters too. It makes for great story, too ... billions of people wiped from the face of the earth, each killed individually by an enemy within their own bodies ... now that's creepy!

Imagine being a survivor,and having to help dispose of the bodies....It would take years yo get rid of all the bodies...

 Of the survivors,bands of people would form,and there would be leaders,some sort of politics would form within the groups,and eventually the fighting would start all over again,either within the groups or with outside groups..

 As for the asteroid..it worked for the dinosaurs,it would work for us too..

The "Reston" event happened about a mile or two from where I live. 
 
Yes, ebola is mutating and changing-from what I've read though, the major mutations that are occuring are deadly to the virus' transcription RNA, and thus aren't deadly mutations. 
 
The one problem with "The Hot Zone" is that it was fiction, based on a true story but liberties were taken with the book- it makes a better story and sells more books that way.
 
There is a combination of factors that will do us in as a race, IMO, if we don't get hit by an interstellar or intergalactic body.  We will be done in by our reliance upon technology, disease, pollution and a variety of other vectors.  All it would take right now is a global famine-cause by pole shifts, a change in the gulf stream, volcanic winter, nuclear winter, accelerated sunspot activity or a million other things. 
 
Once weakened it will become a case of live and let die where the strongest and most cunning will be the only ones that survive.  There are even talks of civil war within these United States.
