Totally OT,.but where in the thumb?

Sorry, went to bed after I posted last night.  I grew up in a little town called Memphis, about 25 miles southwest of Port Huron.

Oh, I almost forgot.  I found this stuff at the pet feed store (small, locally owned) called Squirrel Away that you mix with your seed to discourage the rodents.  It's capsacian (sp?) pepper - red and hot.  It irritates the squirrels eyes and tastebuds temporarily, so they stay off the feeder.  Birds' sensors are different, so it doesn't bother them at all.  It really works - just don't get downwind of it!  It's about $3.00 or so for enough to treat 50lbs of seed.

We don't have a problem with the rodents.  Just a lot of birds out there, this morning the gang is all here again, although Jay the blue jay is being  a little rude.  I've never been a bird watcher before, but I kinda like it.

Hey, who mentioned the turkey vulture?  We had a couple circling over the neighborhood for the past week or two.....Thre are lots of fields around here with cows and tons of deer, but have yet to see any carcasses.

I've also successfully identified a Cooper's hawk and tons of Red-tailed hawks!!!  I love watching them.  And a zillion, well ok, not a zillion but a lot of turkeys on the side roads and even on the side of the busy roads around here.  The one I still can't figure out though was the peacock that I saw walking down the road on my way to a friends house.....I'm pretty sure they aren't native to eastern Kansas.....hahahahaa

This is who else decided to stop by....

Oh cool, gold finches are so pretty!  We have a lot of hawks around here too.  I always stop and stare when they fly by.  I once saw an owl fly over head too but couldn't determine what kind.  Lots of vultures too.

I once saw a painted bunting when I worked in FL.  Now THAT is a cool looking bird!

Great photos Terri!  I love bird-watching, even though I'm not very good at identifying them.  We have these silly little birds, either starlings or sparrows...and every year they try to build nests on top of our outdoor speakers that are underneath the overhang from the house.  The speakers are angled downward and the nesting material will not stay on there, it just slides right off an falls to the deck.  But those birds will not give up, they keep trying and trying and trying.

I've already ;posted this photo in a different thread, but here is a Blue Heron that lives in our neighborhood who made a visit to our deck a couple of weeks ago.

Well, this is going to sound harsh, but if they are starlings or House sparrows, then good!  lol.. both are introduced species to the US and steal nesting/food from native birds.  ;)

Aren't Great Blue Herons beautiful?!  :D

I let Sydney chase the starlings and the cow-birds off, but I can't figure out how to teach her to leave the others alone....hahahahaaa

She thinks that they are ALL there for her enjoyment!

Tina, I've HEARD of it.  Ever heard of Ubly?    My deceased sisters first hubby was from there....really nice guy.  Sorry all...back to the birds....

Glenda, actually it's pretty funny to have the 2 conversations going at once, makes me feel like I'm at Mom & Dad's house!

    Another thread hijack...

Yep, Glenda, I've heard of Ubly, never been.

I used to tell people I was from Memphis and the first response was almost always "Tennessee?".  Then I'd say it was 15 miles north of Richmond and I'd always get "Virginia?".  Yeah, Memphis Tennessee is 15 miles north of Richmond Virginia.

    Some birds are actually smarter.....

Does it count if I hijack my own thread?  This will make you giggle, I can totally relate to the "Memphis, TN"

I was in high school and went to visit my aunt in CA for spring break.  Anyway, I went to school as a guest with my friend and I was wearing my letter jacket from my  high school.  Well, this other girl stood there and was talking to me and asked me if I went to high school in the next town, I said no, I was from Colorado.  (Seriously, without exaggeration) She looked at me with a puzzled look and said, "Colorado, hmmm, isn't that east of here?"   Ummmmm......yeah!!!!  Only thing west is the Pacific and HI.

Terri, doesn't that make you wonder what exactly she was learning in school?

Tina, I actually had to turn away before I started laughing out loud!  I was 17yrs old at the time and I was still stunned!!!  I do wonder a lot!!!!

Things that make you go, hmmmmmmm.........I just hope she didn't try to go to medical school!!!!!  hahahahahaaa
