Glucosamine

    Glucosamine

I posted this on another board also,,,I'm getting desparate.
I decided I needed to get DH some Glucosamine tablets.  His back is really bad, he was going to the chiroprator for a while a few months ago, and now he went to a doctor and is going for therapy twice a week.  He used to carry mail and back when he had a walking route for years...it probably finally caught up to him.   He has been working at the golf course the last few years, and can't even do that right now because of his back. I keep trying to suggest this or that, and he does just what he thinks he wants to,,,,,,,,which is not a lot to help his back.   But now its getting serious,,,its stopping us from doing things we have been doing together,,,,golfing on Friday  nights, bowling in a mixed league on Sunday nights,,,,,,,so its about time I MAKE him listen to something.    Long story short,,,I went to buy him some glucosmine and got to the store and saw so many different things and only thing I keep thinking is they say that MSM is great to have with Glucosamine.  Since its not too cheap, I thought maybe I should find out what others might be using and if they think it works.
Hoping for some help from you guys.  THANKS in advance!

Is there one called jointflex or something (colorful bottle)?  I think my mom uses that in triple strength.  Next time I talk to her I will ask.  I know she likes whatever she uses.

I give Glucosamine and MSM to my horse and dogs.  The way I understand it is glucosamine helps lubricate the joints and MSM helps in reducing any swelling associated with the joints.  IMO, if I was having back issues I would take a pill that has both.  Glucosamine is to maintain joint health but if you also have pain MSM may alleviate the pain as well.  I know places like Costco/Sam's Club carry a glucosamine/msm supplement.  I would start there and see if that helps at all.

I believe it was Callie that suggested Knox Gelatin with Glucosamine, it takes a few months to get into the system and start working, but she said it worked for her and I have always heard good things about Knox Gelatin.  I posted a link for similar questions regarding Nigel's joints and the suggestions that have come up there are all options available to humans too.  I don't know how to link to a specifi thread, but it is:
Joint Health under Older Dogs under the Health thread.

I just want to add a word of caution here, as I have a bad back also.  You don't say what the problem is, or if he has had Xrays or an MRI, or been to an orthopedic doctor.  A bad back can have many different causes, and I surely wouldn't want to diagnose or push him to do more than he thinks he can.  You could just make things worse.

If you know it is just arthritis, Callie does have a wealth of info, and you can PM her for it.  But if it is more than that, please get him to see an orthopedic spine specialist.

Oh, and if he has high blood pressure, I believe it is the glucosmine that can spike it more.  Again, talk it over with a doctor.

He has spent months at the chiropractor and now he is going to a doctor and for therapy.   Its not only arthritis, but also arthritis.

Last time I went to Costco for glucosamine w/chondroitin I couldn't find it and since I didn't want to grow old and die in there looking for it, I grabbed something else - Move Free by Schiff. I have arthritis in my knees and I could feel a difference within a week. I've been following the advice I got from Callie and adding a scoop of  Knox NutraJoint to a cup of coffee or tea every day, and that's helped a lot too.  I can take Max for a much longer walk and the only thing that gives me a problem is stairs, which I have to go up and down like a feeble old lady [:D] putting both feet on each step. Fortunately, I have a 1 story house and most places have escalators or elevators. At Costco, I think the Move Free was about $21 for 180 tablets.

Move free is what my mom uses.

Knox... I'd like to share this info with my mom... you just use a spoonful a day in coffee and it helps? Where do you buy it?

Knox NutraJoint (the granules you add by the scoop) is in the Jello aisle of the grocery store.  It's gelatin and calcium  Don't get the 'flavored' one -- just the plain one.  half a scoop for most dogs (unless BIG ones) or a scoop (comes IN the canister) in food or drink.

It makes your coffee a tad grainy but you can't even taste it.    If you are a juice drinker that's easy too.  I used to keep it in my desk drawer at work and add it to my coffee at work every morning -- painless, easy and easy to remember for ME.  LOL.  It was the weekend one that was tough to remember, but I used to make up a couple of baggies with a scoopfull in them to toss in my purse if we went out for breakfast.  I'm not good with anything that takes a lot of 'prep' for me -- It has gotta be "grab and go"!!

I know they do have pills out now -- but I can't vouch for those -- and it sounds to me by looking at the website that those are more glucosamine than gelatin.

Glucosamine is temporary -- it is a hydrator- plumps up connective tissue but when you stop using it it stops working.  Nothing permanent at all.  The gelatin/calcium IF you use it for 3 months or better does actually help REBUILD cartilage.

Callie... is taking glucosomine every other day (since the capsule is too much for taking all at once) doing nothing since you said when you don't take it, it doesn't work.  Or would that be if you stop taking it over a prolonged period.  I just started Zoe on it this week but I was doing 1 500 mg capsule every other day instead of splitting the powder over 2 days since I didn't think it would split evenly.

    Thanks!

Also, I forwarded the knox info to my mom and friend with knee issues.

I'm afraid none of this is going to work,,,I think its sciatic....do you guys think any of these things help for that? He was taking Alieve but didn't feel any better, not with the muscle relaxers that they gave him.    So he is on aspirin now,,,still taking the relaxers though. But today started on Triple Flex by Nature Made.   I guess it can't hurt.      But I wonder if I should get the Knox Nutra Joint also?

    Dyan,

The problem with chondrotin is that it is very, very expensive to manufacture.  Truth is, a lot of brands say that they have it in there, but it's relly not there.  For years I use NOW brand glucosimine only and did well.  I did so well that I quite taking it.  A year ago I hurt myself again and have been in tremendous pain since.  I have osteo-athritis where the cushining is gone between the disk.

I am now taking CosaminDS because it is the only product used in extensive studies and it does have both.  I get mine at the Vitamin Shoppe because they carry the tablets.  Walgreens has the capsules, but I can't take them because the taste is soooo bad thru the capsule, that I can't even swallow it.  I buy the 75 tablet bottle because I never have enough cash to buy the bigger bottles. LOL.  Yes, it is expensive.

Those shooting pains down the leg are just terrible.  The best relief I found - also not cheap - was a really, really good massage person. And by massage, I don't mean the relaxing kind.  I found someone who would do the deeper tissue massaging combined with a lymphatic type of massage to get the blood flowing in that area again..  And the first 6 - 8 visits was a type of torture. And every time I would re-hurt myself again, the next few visits were very painful as well.  But, if I managed to respect my limits of where I was at at the moment, and not hurt myself again, then the deep massaging got better each time.   And this person was really good and knew NOT to go too deep.  If you do this, you need someone who has the training to do way more than massage, but who has the ability to know "just how far" to go.  It really matters.  The muscles get all tight and bound up and you have to work those kinks out.  It doesn't happen overnight.  So, you can't have someone go in  there and get really deep in those muscles to start with, or it will just cause other muscles to tighten up and then he would be in more pain.  You need to find someone who will respect what his pain tolerance is.   And, suprisingly, even tho it was my lower back, she would find areas of my upper back that didn't hurt until she started massaging, but then it would hurt.  That's because my upper back was trying to compensate and "protect" my lower back.  It may hurt while the area is first being worked on, but common sense will tell you how much is too much.  It shouldn't hurt afterwards, but might be sore.  "Regular" massages won't help at all, in my opinion, and from my experience.

In the meantime, there are pressure points which should help immensly to remove the pain.  Most of the ones you can work on for him are all in the buttuck region.  Yep,  no pun intended, but our butts carry a LOT of stress.  I'll do my best to describe this.  It's going to sound funny with me typing these words, but hopefully you'll understand what I'm saying.  Basically, you are not massaging this area as much as pressing down in spots and looking for sore locations.  There will be no doubt to him when you find one of these.  There will likely be multiple points, 3 - 5 probably, on each side that are really tender and really sore.  The trick is to press down fairly hard until this pressure point has "released".  I can't describe in words how much pressure.  You don't want to leave bruises, or be so very hard that it makes it more sore, but it does have to have enough pressure that is is uncomfortable.  I was told it would only take about 3 seconds.  It always took much longer for me.  Maybe 10 seconds before it would release for me on the really stubborn ones.. Maybe 6 seconds on the easier ones.  Every person will be different.  The very first time, and only the first time, it hurt so bad that I just started crying.  But I wouldn't let the person stop because I knew it would help. And it really did.  None have ever been that sore again, but boy they do get sore!   And I literally sigh in relief afterwards.  It's an instant relaxation of those muscles areas for me. This just seems to de-stress that area. After those are done, then it would help to "massage" that area, but again, I don't mean the regular type of action.  It would be similiar to taking one small muscle group at a time and  just doing a back and forth, with some pressure, over that one muscle group at a time. This would take both hands in order to cover more territory.

Anyway, it really makes a huge difference to me.  I can't do them very well on myself, but when I start hurting, I can do them myself enough now to keep the pain at bay because I try not to let it get that bad.   I'm not sure what it is, but in my mind of think of it as like a muscle intersection that's backed up with too much traffic and I'm unjamming the traffic flow (or the blood flow, or whatever).    It helps with the lower back pain for me, and it is always the best thing to stop those shooting pains down my legs. I've not found anything else that works as well at relaxing those muscles.  Not saying that muscle relaxants wouldn't help, but this seems to do way more to help than any one other thing for a sciatica nerve problem.  At least for me.   And for me, it helps immediately.  I hope I've explaines this well.  Good luck.

Thank you to all of you, for your advise and help.

Chasza, I am printing this for DH, thank you very much,,, you took a long time to write that. I appreciate it.

Dyan, I got the Knox Nutrajoint for DH's bad knee. Of course he wouldn't take it. [sm=lame.gif] I wasn't going to waste it so I started taking it for my bad hip. It has made a huge difference. It took a while to work but I can really tell now if I forget.
