So excited so many others loved The Kite Runner, too; it is, without a doubt, one of the most compelling recently written novels I've read. Again, I recommend that one without hesitation - I did weep throughout, but it's not maudlin. Just moving.
Anne Rice (at least the first Vampire series and some of the Mayfair stuff) is my guilty pleasure. I first read Interview when I was 13 or so and have a first edition of the paperback and a signed first edition of the hard cover. I waited SOOOO long for the second book to come out - I was actually in college and was a little underwhelmed when I read the jacket and found Lestat would become a rock star in the 20th century. But it was better than it sounded! Still, the first is, for my money, the pinnacle. So fraught with conflict, ambiguity and emotion -very HUMAN!
Love Margaret Atwood - even loved the Opera based on The Handmaid's Tale. Very operatic material...
I almost picked up "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice the other day. It begins with Interview with the Vampire and then had like 3 other books with it. I've never read any Anne Rice novels, but I did see the movie Interview with the Vampire. I've been wanting to try her stuff out. I might just go pick up one of her books this weekend now. [

] I was confused though because there were SO many books by her and I didn't know if some of them were part of a series and I didn't want to read anything out of order.
