Questions for those of you who cook Mexican dishes

What do you mean? too sticky? i dont know if you really can mess that up

No.. it is hard to explain…they kinda were “heavy” feeling in your mouth.   I ended up having to roll them out a bit since for some reason they weren#%92t getting flat and big enough with the tortilla press.   But no matter how thin I got them they were still "think and heavy feeling"

It was just weird.. I have had plenty of fresh tortillas in my life,  in fact many of the better Mexican food restaurants in town have a tortilla maker in the front of the restaurant and you can just go up and get tortillas while you are waiting for your table. SO I know how they are SUPPOSE to taste and feel.. but these were nothing like I have ever had before. It was even the same brand “maseca” that was in the website you gave.

I am very perplexed by it because it isn#%92t like it is hard to make them.. there isn#%92t much you can screw up and I am actually quite competent in the kitchen so I really don#%92t get it… it makes me sad though…[&o]

If they felt "heavy" its maybe because you used "too much" dough, try little amounts first, they dont have to be the same size of the tortilla press, if you press hard enough they are going to be as flat as a piece of paper, press them like if your life depends on it [;)]

I actual made 2 batches when the first one didn't work out and both turned out the same.. I used exact measurements.... BUT maybe I will try again![:)]

As for your comment to "press like your life depended on it"... I even put the press on the floor and stepped on the lever... hmmm... that SHOULD have worked right?[:D] perhaps though mine isn't the best quality press???

Anyone who has lived here knows that some of the best mexican food is actually the "Albertos" taco shops (albertos, robertos, humbertos, alibertos.... and the list of "bertos" is endless...) but they are great, cheap and fast.

Wow Shelley - I didn't realize the "bertos" places were all over California.  We have them up here too and they are our favorite place for a quick dinner.  Yummy and cheap [:D]

WOW.. that is funny because I had no idea they were in northern California too... I thought it was just southern CA thing Cathy... I have 5 to chose from within a 1.5 mile radius from my house... THEY ARE EVERYWHERE and yes, delicious![:D

Were you stressed when you made them?
My abuelita says if you are stressed or angry or worried about something...anything....your tortillas will suffer..lol. [;)]

    ETA: BTW..she doesn't use a recipe...just feel and taste...wish I could do that!

[sm=lol.gif]LMAO!  Well.. no I wasn't stressed when I STARTED the process...but after the second failed "press attempt".. I began to get ticked off... does that count? [:D]

It's funny...but kinda true. Whenever I bake..I need to be happy or the cake or cookies or whatever simply will not turn out well!
LOL...it's rather "Like Water For Chocolate"...hehe

Just a thought but maybe you mixed the tortilla too long?  I know when I am angry or stressed and trying to cook I sometimes 'beat" stuff too long which causes problems with the gluten binding process and dries out/thickens the mix.

ohhhhhhhhhh.. maybe that was it???????  It said 3 minutes, but I think I did a minute or so more becasue the mix wasn't blending well (I think the bowl was too deep so the bottom was still dry).  HMMM.. thanks rredbird.. I might try it again and see if  the mixing was the problem![:D]
