Dr. Laura

She is on marriage # 2 but I have no idea when the first ended, I suppose Google would know lol. There is a man who knew her around age 20something, and by some accounts got her into radio...that says they were intimate while she was married...he has pictures that would erm...seem to confirm that...lol! But again...we were all young once...some of us young now...and we all make mistakes. I think if she's been open about these things...which I don't know yea or nay on that...learned and moved on from there...more power to her.

Her doctorate is in physiology. But she sure has practiced family counselling so would have all the requirements meant for that.

I've been listening to her show for years, or at least I did when I made a long daily commute.  I haven't caught her show very often in the last couple of years.  When I first heard her show, I was shocked.  I thought she was a royal b...you know what.  But I got hooked on the show and eventually came to respect her, even though I don't agree with everything she says. She's very much an advocate for children.  She does take a very hard-line on sticking with a marriage, but that is primarily because she believes that divorce is so hard on children.  I've heard her tell people who are having marital problems that they should either get out of the marriage or fix the marriage before they bring children in to it.  But once you have children, then you should do everything possible to keep the marriage intact for the good of the children.  She believes that kids need to have both parents in their lives full time and that the children's needs are more important than the adults' happiness.  However, even when kids are involved she doesn't advocate that people should stay in marriages that have chronic infidelity, abuse, etc.   She has been married twice, but is still married to the father of her son.  I believe she was almost 40 before she had a child.  There were nude pictures of her posted on the internet by a man that she lived with when she was very young.  She admits to having made many mistakes in her life.  Her beliefs and conservatism really came about when she converted to orthodox Judaism.

My mom listens to her a lot.  Sometimes she gets a little self righteous and thinks her way is the best and only way.  I don't agree with all of her views.

But, I do like her "no whining" rule.  Sometimes people call in with these problems and only want to hear that they are right and everyone else is wrong and it isn't their fault.  She tells it like it is and makes them be accountable for their own actions.

Well heck most people's Mama's can do that [;)]. So can Dr Phil...seems like being the rude doc is in right now...taken over from the touchy feely I'm okay, You're okay stuff...interesting the way that stuff cycles isn't it? I wonder if dog training is the same way? lmao...

I don't make a point of listening to her, but when she is on XM and I need a laugh, I listen.........example, woman calls in with 4 kids by 3 different fathers, never married and wants to know what she should do, because her current boyfriend hasn't proposed after living with him for years.......come on......[8|]

I'm a fan of hers. I do think she can be unnecessarily rude sometimes - but I really like how she sticks up for kids. She hammers on moms who puts boyfriends and social lives before their children. She also gets after dads who don't do enough - like when they abandon previous kids because the new wife thinks she's more important. I see WAY too many problems in my family that could have been prevented if there was less "shacking up" and more responsibilty taken.

As far as the homosexuality thing - that's primarily due to her orthodox Judaism background. I wouldn't say she's "anti" gay as much as she is pro mom AND dad when it comes to raising kids. I don't necessarily agree with her on this point, but it doesn't negate the many good points she makes.

I do really enjoy her books. The "Ten Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives" and "Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" both really changed the way I look at things and realize how much the choices I make impact my life and the lives of my family members.

It has been a number of years since I listened to Dr. Laura.  I always liked her and respected her opinion no doubt, in large part because, like me, she is very conservative.  I think most of us tend to respect people who think like us.

I am a little surprised by some of your comments though Shelly.  Because the Dr. is repulsed by homosexuality you give no validity to her opinion on ANY subject?  [8|]  Many very intelligent people are repulsed by homosexuality, especially deeply religious people, which, I think, Dr. Laura is.

I didn#%92t say that I don#%92t agree with her on anything nor that there is no validity to some of her points on ANY subject… I have never been able to tolerate listening to her for more than a few minutes at a time so I can not speak to the majority of her advice. I can appreciate that she has helped a great deal of women, and especially in situations where children are involved. Dr. Laura IS indeed a deeply religious person and while I practice all levels of tolerance including religious tolerance what I cannot do is RESPECT an individual who PUBLICALY says (or writes) things such as:

“A huge portion of the male homosexual populace is predatory on young boys."

"If you're gay or lesbian it's a biological error."

"....[reparative] therapies which have been successful in helping a reasonable number of people become heterosexual."

For me, it is not that she is “repulsed” by homosexuality that bothers me, everyone has their own opinion on this issue, it is the public nature of her opinions.  I think this country needs a hell of a lot more tolerance, especially in the area of homosexuality and gay rights, and in my opinion she is leading people in the OPPOSITE direction we should be going.  I am sure she is great for a lot of people, and VERY beneficial at helping women, but I personally cannot listen to her.
